I'm constantly amazed when people are surprised to learn that the military leans right-wing.

The military (and their domestic sibling, the police force) exists to protect the interests of the state. And the state exists to protect the interests of the ruling class. So of course the military is going to attract those who are sympathetic to preserving the interests of capital, private property, and white supremacy "american" interests. And if they get deployed overseas to put down a few popular uprisings and/or murk a few haji's along the way, they're probably not going to concern themselves too much about it.

The military is the armed wing of the state. It exists to carry out the mission of corporate imperialism on behalf of the ruling class/business elite, etc. This is its primary function. Having a supply of hyper militant nationalists who view foreign citizens as sub-human who need to be civilized and/or tamed facilitates that objective. But having a few liberals or democrats within its ranks does nothing to detract from its core mission, because the institution itself exists to eradicate foreign opposition. A soldier with a heart of gold is still a soldier, and he or she still serves at the behest of an institution that does not share his/her values.

Most of the stats I've seen put the military as slightly more right-leaning than America at large, but it's not much--substantially less than it used to be, and substantially less than people generally think it is. Anecdotally, it's a vastly more libertarian (albeit more hawkish than the average capital-L type) sort of right-leaning (not the jackbooted fascist archetype you're saying "of course" are right-wingers), and the left-leaning types are pretty much always pragmatic center-left types, not wacky left-wing ideologues.

Also, aside from partisanship and ideology, the officers have pretty much always fucking hated Trump, specifically--from his initial rise in the campaign, to now. By that, I mean statistically (obviously I know individual officers who love him), and I mean across the officer ranks, from Lieutenants to Generals.

Anecdotally, many of the most vehement and thoughtful critics of Trump that I know are (or were) military officers, particularly outside of friends/associates who lean left, politically.

American Libertarianism is a gateway drug to full-throated conservatism, because their fetish for preserving private property always outweighs their desire for limited government. Could you elaborate on how it was incorrect? Did the initial narrative describe the students as approaching the indigenous protesters? I know that it described the students as encircling the indigenous protesters, which appears to have been accurate.
