I have done shooting from retention on many previous occasions and never had a problem. This was just a combination of dirty gun, not rolling it to the side enough, and bad luck. I'm still a fan of the 'c' glocks and woundnt hesitate to do more firing from retention. Also, if it were a real life thing, those possible little cuts are not a concern. 2/29/2012 8:51:18 AM |

an update on the ohio CCer from last year (original post here: ?topic=503107&page=110#14893037, additional details here: http://ohioccw.org/201107214955/cantonpd.html):
all charges were dropped, and the arresting officer was fired in January after an IA review of this and several other incidents.
the driver ended up pleading to a traffic charge of "stopped in the roadway" and paying a small fine. 2/29/2012 2:11:20 PM |

Glad to see that the cop got what was coming to him. It makes you think though. What would you do if a cop didn't give you a chance to speak?

just keep repeating until you are acknowledged.
I met a LEO once to sell something of mine; he rolled up in an unmarked vehicle (didn't know he was a LEO prior to this) and when he got out I said, "well, I guess I'll declare that I am in posession of a fire..." he interrupted, "ok, I don't give a shit".

hmmm.... i think i'm going with an sti 1911/2011
2 questions... if one can afford a full-on "open" gun should one get it ( compensated/red dot/custom barrel/trigger/ 9lb spring etc.) or should one get a gun that could be shot in the production class.
basically
or...
can a gun setup for 9mm major fire regular 9mm P?

whats the best way to get a scope set back to optical center? (noob)
also, thinking of refinishing the saiga as my next proect. anyone have any experience with cerakote?
or since its just a saiga, possibly a cheaper and easier to work with equivalent? nothing fancy, just black.
im typically pretty good at bluing, but the various steels and aluminums in this damn thing frustrate me. none of the chemicals i currently have are giving me even finish on anything. i can only assume that various grades of metal were used?
anyway, seems easier to strip and paint it at this point. maybe high temp engine paint

I wasn't considering CAR for accuracy, more for personal defense. what other retention methods are popular? 3/2/2012 11:48:31 AM |
hkrock All American 1014 Posts user info edit post |
A good class.
I mean if you seriously want a set of steps for a self-defense scenario, practice shooting from retention or the speed rock, as you create the space, that is when you will transition to your isosceles as you're backing up and engaging the person; a good 5-shot cadence will help your reset here.
So in short: 1)modified hackathorn rip 2)Speed rock 3)Engage while creating space.
This guy does it correctly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22hk4Niaka4
It's a simple method, it's accurate and it's violent. That is the trifecta of winning a gunfight. 3/2/2012 3:17:37 PM |

sumfoo1- My opinion on race guns... Learn to run the shit out of a 'stock' gun first, then move on to a race gun. Race guns are going to teach bad habits and hide/disguise problems if you start on them.
I'm missing something, what is CAR? Are we talking close in defensive shooting, or retention, or a mixture of both?

Why create space when you can move aggressively at your target? I.e. a quick S.P.E.A.R./flinch, and engage. If you are in a gun fight that close like in the above video, you are bound to get shot so might as well make it personal. 3/2/2012 5:49:07 PM |

Just watched some youtube videos. CAR looks like a great way to induce a malfunction, and get shot.
Civilian defensive handgun is always taught to create space. 3/2/2012 6:15:17 PM |
hkrock All American 1014 Posts user info edit post |
^^Speed rock is for intimate distance anyway. If I'm engaging with a handgun within arms reach, I'm going to be backing up to create space. If I'm within arms reach of you, and I pull out my handgun, and start trying to make contact shots, you have a better chance of taking it away from me.
If I'm 5 or more meters away from you then yes I will be closing the distance.
Edit: As always these are just the opinions of one guy

What'd habits do they teach/disguise. From what I've read it's harder to go from a stock pistol to a compensated open gun with red dot sight.
You don't draw the same, and it doesnt kick the same ( back instead of up ). I'm not trying to sell myself on anything, and I agree. I'll probably get a pretty standard sti .40 (cheapest major round I can find) 3/2/2012 9:10:58 PM |

Race guns are ferraris. Would you learn to drive on a ferrari? I don't know your skill level, only you can judge that.
Also my buddy has an STI Spartan which is a basic entry level STI. Buy a Springfield Loaded and save yourself about 600 bucks if you're dead set on this course of action. 3/3/2012 1:43:56 AM |

The draw shoube the same, unless you are using a specialized race holster. You can always learn a new draw. Recoil is recoil. Less is just better. You can learn to acquire a new sight picture. Put dot on target.
If you want a race gun, that is your call. I've put over 30k rounds down range in the last three years to learn how to run my stock glocks, and am just now considering building a race gun some time next year. I've seen plenty of people that do well when runnin their race gun, but perform poor to only marginal with a stock gun. I've seen some guys run a stock gun better than the guys with race guns. Light, short triggers and short resets, with added weight and compensators really hide how you work the trigger, manage recoil, and control your follow through. A red dot vs standard sight increases the game factor (dot on target, press, dot on target, press, repeat). 3/3/2012 12:33:25 PM |

i right now i'm sitting on a double stack STI from Dawson
Either that or a taurus.
My pistol background is a bunch of slow/ accurate heavy hitters.
Colt python Desert .50 & a 12" 500 S&W Mag.
i know i don't want a polymer frame, i like the feeling of weight and the lack of flex (i'd prefer a tungsten guide rod but damn that gets expensive) I know the 2011 frame has a plastic grip to keep weight down with double stack clips. 3/3/2012 12:42:28 PM |

Cool, I'm sure you'll like it. That gun looks perfect with the 4' barrel. Sometimes i think about cutting my 6" down. Those Hogue grips they ship with the newer guns are hideous though. I like the older wood insert Ruger grips though sometimes I use the Hogue Tamer grips on my SRH for the recoil.

Bottom out the adjustment in one direction, turn it the other direction and count the clicks til you bottom it out, then reverse the direction again and turn it half the clicks.

I've had good luck with KG Gunkote. If you have access to a sandblaster you should use Gunkote or something similar. If you don't have a blaster or an oven then try Duracoat. I've done the Krylon thing on a couple guns with very good results, but I kick myself sometimes. If you're going to spend the time to prep and paint a gun you might as well spend a few dollars on the more durable paint. High temp paint isn't bad; it's certainly better than Krylon, but you really should look into something better if you want the finish to stay nice.3/5/2012 12:14:16 PM |

full size 9mm's is going to open up pandora's box in terms of opinions... there are the "Glock4Life" folks, then there are the XD and MP guys. I think there are plenty of good companies with many quality pistols, but really all it boils down to is do you want a manual safety or not, do you want a long or short trigger pull, and most of all- what feels good in your hands. I think my favorite full size pistol I've shot in 9mm so far is the S&W M&P9- same goes for their compact 3/5/2012 7:08:16 PM |

I was thinking 9 cause it's cheap and I want to learn the competative shooting techniques. I think going with 40 because you need to load your own for 9mm to make major so .40 is the cheapest standard load that will make major. Basically might as well learn on what I'm going to have to shoot with. But if I should go .45 I'm cool with that one too.
I just like the feel of heavy guns. The polymer guns are great carry weapons, but I don't like how they feel to shoot and since this is going to be purely a range gun/target shooting weapon that's all I really care about. And now that I've seen slow mo vids of how much that poly frame flexes all over hell when you pull the trigger I think I know why I don't like them.
I could care less about all the 4lb gun pulls my pants down stuff. 3/6/2012 6:50:30 AM |
