no shit? got a link to that lens? I've been wanting one of those, and that price is too good to pass up.

One of these days I'm going to get a polarizing filter.
I like to get photos of the springs in Florida when I go cave diving -- showing the clarity of the water would be nice. It is pretty neat to look at a pool of blue water and see the bottom from the surface, but sometimes there's too much glare.
Being able to take shots like this would be nice. Not that they are incredible photos...just saying I'd like to get the water clarity like these -- hopefully using a polarizing filter would help. Awhile back I shot a photo through my polarized sunglasses and it seemed to do the trick.

it hovered around 20°F...aside from battery life being a bit shorter than normal, i didn't have any problems...most of the precipitation was in the form of sleet and so most everything just bounced off the camera...and since nothing stuck, it didn't have a chance to melt when i put it away (actually, even then it probably wouldn't have mattered since the camera was never in a place warm enough to melt the sleet )
as for your train pic,

I too was just in NYC during the same week that Ronny was up there. I shun Ronny for not calling me so we could hook up and find some cool shit to shoot together...
Anyhow, many many pics I've taken this past month. Btw, I'm down in Miami, Florida for the rest of the year doing my co-op with a commercial photographer down here. It's pretty badass. Suck it NC.

My parents had an owl in their backyard the past few nights...so I stood outside and waited for it to show up... I know these shots aren't that great...but I was about 30 yards away zoomed all the way in with my 55-200mm lens on my D40. I used an exposure (obviously) and you can tell by the way the owl kept moving and blurring the image. Enjoy.

It isn't digital but does any one have any recommendations on where to get film developed? both C-41 and E-6. In the Wilmington area
Costco did a really good job with the C-41 prints and scans. I just got some film back from Walmart and it looked horrid. The scans are blown out for the most part, looks almost nothing like the print. On top of that some of the prints are even framed differently than the negative. I know Walmart sends out the slides to Fuji to get them developed but there isn't an option to get any scans. 11/10/2009 11:24:39 AM |

looking to get into the game - if buying used (looking at a used D40), would I need to worry the number of exposures? (can i be sure that there's plenty of "life" left? - if that makes any sense)... i'm new at this (please be gentle) 11/12/2009 12:33:20 PM |

^^ The D40's are so cheap now, you'd be an idiot to buy a used D40 unless you can get it for $200 for a kit. I wouldn't worry too much about the life of the shutter unless the person took a lot of pics for a few years. I mean they are routinely around $400-500 for a kit last year. I honestly would look at a D90 or the rebel lines now. The video features that are offered on the newer DSLR's are a pretty nice feature for that time you don't have your p&s or doing some quick low light vids. 11/12/2009 4:27:57 PM |

cool, thanks
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ele/1462727592.html i was thinking this girl would let hers go for about $250 or so, which interested me...
also, i found another set with the body, 18-55 kit lens, Nikon 55-200 VR lens, and a Sigma 70-300 lens for $500 (i've emailed him, but haven't heard back yet)...
my budget is somewhat limited, d90 seems way out of the price range 11/12/2009 5:17:04 PM |

from the first amazon review of that d40 battery grip:
Quote : | "It does feature a vertical shutter release, but keep in mind that it functions via infra-red signal. You simply tell your camera to use remote shooting, and turn on the grip's vertical shutter. You also have to hit a switch on the grip that releases a little pop-out infra-red remote. That's all there is to it. It's not horrible. It's not great either. But if you need it, it's there. You can't half-press focus like you're use to doing with the vertical shutter release. You just press (just as you would your Nikon wireless remote control) and the camera quickly detects the best focal point and snaps the photo. That's not the fault of Targus. Nikon didn't include a way for battery grips to communicate to the camera body. At least not on our lower end D40 series cameras." |
useless. part of the whole appeal to me of the d40 is its small size. why screw that up with a chunky battery mount if the vert. shutter release is so limited?11/13/2009 7:14:55 PM |

And Ronny, apparently only NCSU shooters use the back button for AF. Every other photog I've met had to be trained to use the AF button whenever I hand them my camera. 11/14/2009 3:27:35 PM |
