Ok since im a complete noob with cameras maybe yall could help. My mom has a Cannon rebel xsi. My dad seems pretty set on getting her the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Super Telephoto. Shes an amateur and told him she wanted to take pictures of something far away. Is this a good lens and is there any out there that might be better for the job? Also where is a good place to buy something like this. Thank for the help. 11/18/2009 1:43:54 AM |

Your mother is an amateur and he is going to buy her a lens for $1250 (or more) ???? I'm somewhat of a noob myself but I would think she'd be better off with something other than a prime lens, maybe a 55-300mm or something similar.
link to your suggested lens: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-400mm-Super-Telephoto-Cameras/dp/B00009USW3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258529239&sr=8-1 11/18/2009 2:30:51 AM |

haha yea, I never it made any sense at all. I'm just trying to keep him from wasting his money on settings she would never touch. She always uses auto mood . Since I know nothing, a prime lens would mean she would have to be a specific distance from her target? 11/18/2009 1:31:03 PM |

The 400 f/5.6 is a nice lens for the price. It can be had for 900-1100 used, but it's not a very popular lens. In my experience, I felt the AF to be too slow for tracking fast subjects and honestly, I would rather spend the money on the 100-400 3.5-5.6 IS L lens that Canon makes for about the same price (just sold my 100-400 in the summer for 1150). Plus if you need more length, you can put a TC on them and the lens is super sharp for a zoom wide open. Another bonus is the fact that it is a very compact lens. Perfect for travel photography.
If you are looking to get a canon pro lens that has reach, you can't beat it. Sigma does make their wide range of super zooms such as the 50-500 and like 5 other lens ranges, but they are a bit slow, both in AF and aperture speed. If you mom doesn't know wtf she is doing and not very serious about photography, than save the money and grab one of the super zooms like the 18-270, which is still a pretty damn good lens.
Plus the 100-400 weighs 3lbs, your mom will probably bitch and moan about how heavy the damn thing is. Check photography forums such as Photography on the Net, Fred Miranda, and I'd also check ebay and Amazon too.11/19/2009 3:14:52 PM |

I'm finally taking pictures again and, more importantly, doing something with them
This was from the first weekend in October, right on the parkway. Found out later it was one of the clearest days in a very, very, very, very long time. I simply took this picture to document it. I was out there the next weekend and visibility got down to <5ft
