you're not missing out on much. Multitasking only works for core-apps which isn't really much different then without multi-tasking. 5/4/2010 4:13:48 PM |

i wonder how long it will take developers to add multitasking capability to their apps. there's really like only three or four apps where i'd really care... Safari, Mail, an IM client... 5/4/2010 4:16:34 PM |
Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
^Safari and Mail already do that in beta...but like i said...whats the point really for either?
IM would be useful but I mainly care for the Pandora multi-tasking which sounds like it might be out very close to launch.
The skype multitasking sounds awesome so i might give that a shot. 5/4/2010 4:21:02 PM |

I just want to be able to switch back and forth from one app to another without going through the home screen. I don't need to do it in rapid succession that often, but it's going to make me much happier when I can.5/4/2010 4:52:11 PM |

I didn't think of that. That is pretty useful...although I can do that now in the beta, I've just gotten used to going to the home screen that I don't ever use the fast switch. I need to get in the habit of doing that.
Although now that double tapping the home button is used for multitasking...there is no longer the option to bring up the iTunes controls. 5/4/2010 4:59:49 PM |

I've got mine set to long press for multitasking. The double tap is still for itunes.
I use this sometimes:

Kind of like Palm Web OS for switching applications. It's pretty sweet. There's a bunch of other options too.

Proswitcher is pretty sweet. Got it set to double tap now to bring up the flow (like on web OS). It's almost like this was made to go with the iPhone. You can either tap the x to close the app or swipe up. Very very fluid.

Only works for the 3G, not 3gs. I'll just wait on the new iPhone next month. Although truthfully the biggest features in OS4 I already have.

Beta 3 has some new added features.
My concern about losing iPod controls with double tapping home button have been addressed in this update. Although not exactly the same way as before but now when you double tap the home button it will only ever bring up the multitask bar.
If you scroll to the far left of the multitask bar it brings up iPod controls, shortcut to the iPod app, and screen orientation lock button. 5/5/2010 1:37:17 PM |

The whole "double tap home" to bring up iPod controls was always oddly implemented at best.
Half the time I'd wind up with the little prompt that had the controls, half the time I'd wind up back inside the full on iPod app. 5/5/2010 1:49:56 PM |

man this proswitcher thing is incredibly awesome. it really should have always just been included--there's about 100 different ways you can set it up to access other apps and it behaves as well enough to be a native app. anything from double tapping home to hitting the volume buttons a certain way can be used to get you to the screen to switch between apps. and you still have access to the bottom row of apps while you're flipping through open apps. also in the top right when switching apps it displays the number of alerts you have for that particular app which i thought was pretty cool 5/5/2010 1:51:44 PM |
Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
^^huh? I've never seen that issue before.
The only issues i've had was not double tapping fast enough or missing the second tap and I go to the spotlight search or first page of icons.
I don't see how double tapping the home button could ever bring up the iPod app?

Yeah, like ScHpEnXeL said, I have it set so that double-tap means "iPod and while it always sort of gets me to the play controls one way or the others, it's pretty inconsistent as far as whether I get the floating controls over my app or the iPod app itself. 5/5/2010 3:22:20 PM |

yeah, thats the only way to get those floating controls is IF a song is already playing. I know there are a couple other configurations but I wasn't aware launching the iPod app by default was one of them. Of course I can't check now because 4.0 got rid of all that.

Are you talking about in 4.0 or with backgrounder enabled on 3.x? I could be completely wrong because I haven't read up on it too much, but my understanding is that on 4.0 it won't have any effect on the battery because you're not really leaving it "open" all the time. The way Apple is handling backgrounding processes is to allow apps access to those 7(?) services. Background audio, Completing a task, etc. Since the facebook App doesn't actually DO anything while it's just sitting there, I don't see why it would be using any of those services. It's only "open" because the little task manager remembers it's last known state.
Right?5/5/2010 6:48:42 PM |

^^Haven't really thought much about it. It's not that much more cramped than the standard 4x4 layout, IMO. Just with the addition of folders instead of multiple pages. And then of course if I'm looking for something that I don't use that often, I just swipe over to the left and use spotlight. It's hard to tell from the screenshot, but that bottom right icon is a stack called "Travel" that has 5 icons that pops up with travel related things. Maps, TomTom, Gas Buddy, etc. Helps keeping all those things sorted like that, I think.
^Yeah, that's one of the things I can't WAIT for them to get fixed on the iPad. I can condense 200+ apps on my iPhone into one page, but yet I have to scroll through 4-5 pages on my giant iPad screen? Retarded as hell, IMO.] 5/10/2010 9:02:32 PM |

Since the introduction of folders in 4.0 I've managed to condense 4/5 pages of apps into 2 (and not even 2 full pages). I agree having pages and pages to scroll through is retarded. Even though spotlight was a way around that, i've actually disabled apps/music from showing up in spotlight. Its mostly events, mail and messages + web/wiki.
It would be nice if you could change the sort position of web/wiki to the top though like you can for everything else.
I didn't notice the travel stack until you just pointed it out. The 'http://www.thewolfweb.com' tag does hide the travel tag.

has anyones google maps directions been messing up?
for a few weeks now mine has been all jacked up. first think i noticed was the time estimate being wrong (it'll say 2 hours 24 minutes for a 15 minute trip). then i noticed the actual directions were bad...showing horrible horrible routes (like snaking around the beltline instead of actually going on the beltline.

Is that a new 4.0 feature? There's a Jailbreak app called Universal search that puts Google/wiki/google maps/etc icons on the spotlight page so you just swipe over, type what you want to look for, and then hit the icon of the service you want to search on. I was kinda hoping 4.0 would be that easy.5/10/2010 9:23:13 PM |

Not really exactly what you've described, but I've noticed 2 times in the last 4 days I've searched for a store on google maps and it gave me an "approximate location" for the address. Both times the approximate location ends up being miles from where the stores really are.5/10/2010 9:35:15 PM |
