Any barrel recommendations? Want to go 14.5in, chrome lined, no front sight, 5.56. Not looking to cheap out but don't wat to pay $texas for more than I need.
Basically, what is the value in something like:

Might just get a pistol lower for the time before all the paperwork goes through so I can still play with them. 4/20/2012 9:06:02 PM |

You're not going to get all that with either. Lots of cheap ammo - PSL. 5-600yd accuracy - AR-10. The PSL is a reasonably accurate gun, but I wasn't impressed enough with it at 100yd to even think about doing 500+. The AR-10 can be quite affordable to shoot a lot if you reload, but buying factory ammo will eat you alive in a 308 semi. 4/21/2012 5:11:40 PM |

If I were going to do it over again I would get a DPMS AR-10 variant instead of Armalite. Not that my Armalite isn't a sweet weapon but you can pretty much only use Armalite stuff with it and the DPMS is cheaper. 4/21/2012 6:00:49 PM |

I'm trying to decide between a SCAR-17S, a kel-tec bullpup, and a DPMS AR-10. The kel-tec is appealing because I'm left handed, but the DPMS offers a lot of options for the money. 4/21/2012 10:31:19 PM |

Some of the best ergonomics out there. I love mine. It could use a trigger job though. While it's a light pull it's got a lot of creep. Mine is the Tactical decocker only version that has only one hammer hook. I might buy the aftermarket hammer and grind off the extra hook.

You can get a Taurus 85 Ultra-Lite for that much. I have one and I'd feel perfectly fine with it. I like revolvers for concealed carry.
The LCP/P3AT is also that much and a 9mm Kel-Tec shouldn't be much more.

I saw one on CSF about a month ago. Not sure how much they were asking for it or how close to Raleigh it was though.
Kel tec:
I have owned two, a P11 and a P32. I thought the P32 was a much better overall gun. While the P11 would function perfectly, I thought that the P32 is easier to shoot accurately and is friendlier on the shooter. The P11 just did not fit my hand, and the frame would wear a sore on my hand. Just m2c

That's because they are cheaply put together guns.
Kel-tec has good designs and great prices. They take some pretty good material and throw it together in a low cost method. The end result looks crude but is functional. Having said that, you find quite a few problems (maybe due to sheer volume of guns they produce, idk) and every one that I've seen/read about has been either due to poor finish or ammo. The right person can buy almost any Kel-tec and make it work. All it takes is removing some plastic casting flashing and deburring/polishing some metal. You can also send it back to the company and have them fix it.
If you don't feel right doing that then it's perfectly fine; not everyone likes or know how to work on guns. Having to do that to a carry gun isn't exactly a confidence builder.
The way I look at it is I'll take the chance on a Kel-tec. I may have to do some work, which doesn't bother me one bit. If there is a problem it may take $100 worth of ammo before I'm comfortable with the gun. If that was the case then I would have been better off spending more on a different gun up front, but hindsight is 20/20.
I think Kel-Tec is a good low cost option if you know a little about guns, you're handy, or you're just plain broke. I don't expect most people to think the way I do, so you'd probably be better off not taking the chance.

I will NEVER buy another KT. There are way too many KT owners that praise their customer service and how quick everything is. That alone should be a warning flag. I would rather know absolutely nothing about the customer service of a company than be happy that said company has been able to repair the piece of shit they sold me numerous times.
I bought a P3AT several years ago that never made it through a single full magazine. I knew the fluff & buff procedures and had the gun looking 20x better than when I bought it before I ever even tried shooting it. I ended up sending it back to KT twice and it still never performed great. I ended up selling it at a loss to some other guy when I noticed that the front of the slide was also peening and the recoil assembly appeared to be pounding it's hole bigger.
It doesn't have to do with the quality of materials, the design, etc. It's the company. They're happy to produce low quality pieces of shit that work ~60% of the time knowing that most people will never do anything about it because they have unique designs that aren't (weren't) easily replicated. Look at the Ruger LCP. You don't hear about nearly the amount of problems as the P3AT. For about the same money you get a gun that's nearly identical except it is finished to a much higher quality. Hell, I've owned 2 Hi-Points and they were both absolutely PERFECT. You don't get cheaper materials than that. I've known at least 10 other people that owned them and only 3 had guns that were good out of the box. I think another 2-3 kept theirs after a factory trip or two and the others were like me and had no faith in them. If you choose to carry a KT, I sincerely hope yours is the complete opposite of mine and most of the ones that I've seen.
Sorry for the rant but I really can't stand KT. There are far too many problems for them to completely ignore like they do.4/23/2012 6:56:13 PM |

I can't speak for Hi-Point's pistols, but my 9mm carbine is really fun to shoot. It's given me zero problems, it eats any and all brands of ammo, and the ghost ring sights are fantastic. My only complaint is about the 10 round magazines. I'd like a higher capacity. 4/23/2012 10:57:12 PM |

I've heard nothing but great things about the Kel-Tec Sub-2000 formatted to fit Glock mags. But otherwise, I agree that I've heard mixed reviews about Kel-Tec pistol products, which is why I'm hesitant about the PF9. I've considered the LC9, but I'm so frugal with money that I continue to use my Glock and suck up the extra bulk at times. Maybe one day I'll get an LC9.

^Yeah I should have clarified more that I have no experience with their carbines. I would never buy one but they do seem to be better built based on the reviews. They seem to be extremely difficult to find so maybe KT actually puts a little care into them and makes them solid, reliable firearms. 4/24/2012 12:03:55 AM |

Taking the front sight post off and going to add a low profile gas block, the pins to take that post off are a total bitch. Still have to get the gas tube pin out, I really need a nicer set of punches, the ones I have are slightly too big to be effective on this pin. 4/26/2012 10:54:42 AM |

Got all the pins out, just had to take of the flash supressor to get the front sight post off. Was having a hard time getting any torque on it since I don't have a vice block yet (in the mail) so what I did was took my vertical foregrip and attached it to the top of the receiver. Combine that with a some vice grip pliers on the flash supressor and it came off pretty easy. 4/26/2012 11:56:49 AM |
