Because their game is based on the effort of the entire team. All 3.5 lines have to keep the puck moving, keep backchecking, and keep the pressure on in the offensive zone. When that doesn't happen, things can get ugly in a hurry.

Also, Hedican can't decide if he wants to be awesome or suck, and Laviolette keeps playing Kaberle over Seidenberg.

There are a number of things that can result in a penalty shot. The most obvious is if a player is fouled from behind when he has a clear, unimpeded chance on goal. A penalty shot can also be called if any defending player other than the goaltender closes his hand on the puck in the crease, or if the goaltender throws his stick to stop what would clearly be a goal otherwise.

I've used the last one quite a bit, because at least I have a chance on a penalty shot.
