you dont actually know this. desmond is out for 75 minutes, so there is at least that much time between seeing the rat run the maze and seeing the rat dead, there may or may not have been enough time.
but you bring up interesting points. unfortunately, when shows start to deal with the supernatural there has to some suspension of disbelief.3/1/2008 1:27:08 AM |

desmond is simply moving about two different ranges of the space time continuom
say noon 12/24/96- 8pm 12/24/96
and
say noon 12/24/04- 8pm 12/24/04
every instant of time has its very own layer. he's somehow skipping layers (8 years worth backwards as well)
faraday has mastered the art of this and one of his drawings even showed a diagram of a layer with a fold in it due to electromagnetism. 3/1/2008 1:41:00 AM |

they may not ever reveal the property that explains the time sync of the island.
Right now there are two burning questions that I think they will answer before this season is put to a halt by the greedy bastards who are writing and producing the show:
1) Who the phuuck is Ben anyways? Why the heck dusnt Locke ask him directly? 2) Who the phuuck do the people on the boat work for? Why do they want to kill the islanders?
I think that the boat is owned by Mr. Whidmore and that he is part of the organization that began the Dharma intiative. That explains why they were told to ignore all transmission from Penny -her old man knows what she is up to and is trying to prevent her from contacting the boat since she talked to Charlie and the Russians in the N. Pole who "saw" the island briefly.
They are looking for Ben because they know he killed all of their people in the original colony and they haven't been able to find the island since they lost contact due to the efforts of Mikhail and the women in the Hydra station. He has somehow kept how his people come and go (Richard for Juliette. Juliettes sister recovering from cancer, the supplies from the airplace, etc) from the island a secret from the Dharma corp, but they know what he has been up to (angry chinese guy knows who ben is and knows that he can do what no one else can already).
They want to kill the islanders because they do not understand the force on the island that Ben (and Richard) commmunicate with. They expect (understandably) that anyone on the island will turn out like Ben -killing intruders on behalf of the island (Locke). Thus the orders for the copter crew were to kill inhabitants and make way for a new colony.
Right now, this seems like a believable set of events to come -without knowing the physics of the island. Get ready for the physics to be explained as "supernatural" or "god-like" to allow them to cover their tracks with the science nerds.
Remember: they promised we would know about Jacob this season -that will be the kicker... 3/1/2008 4:55:56 PM |

ok...i can understand this from the point where Desmond blanks out in 1996 for 75 minutes, but never blanks out in 2004
i can't understand that desmond would not remember time travelling to the future post-1996 and not recognizing sayid when he crashes on the island.
maybe i just can't stop thinking about this chronologically...but 2004 Desmond as we know him before this episodes never mentions that he met Daniel Faraday in 1996 nor is he aware that he time travelled to 2004 in 1996. But in this episode 2004 Desmond talks to 2004 Daniel Faraday who tells him to find 1996 Daniel Faraday. When 2004 Desmond goes back to find 1996 Daniel Faraday, he has created 1996-A Desmond, who did not originally exist chronologically in 1996. If he did, both 2004 Desmond and 2004 Daniel Faraday would have known each other in 2004 prior to Desmond getting on the helicopter. Also 2004 Desmond should have known known 2004 Sayid if 1996 Desmond had previously travelled to 2004 and talked to 2004 Sayid.
The way they've set this up assumes the notion that you can time travel...but you're not aware of it...which makes sense if you travel to the future and have no prior knowledge of the future, like they sort of do with Desmond not recognizing Sayid...but that doesn't really hold enough water for me to fully buy into...

^^^^ Alvar Hanso is head of the Hanso Foundation (part of that supplemental Lost Experience that happened between seasons 2 and 3). He financially backed the creation of the DHARMA Initiative. At various points in time, different Others have quoted him (implying that some of his philosophies play a part in the Other's beliefs). He is the grandson of the captain of the Black Rock. In this episode, another Hanso family member was auctioning off the journal. 3/2/2008 12:38:19 PM |

i like this section
Quote : | "Widmore. After “The Constant”, I’m ready to officially declare the Freightors are working for Charles Widmore. Why? Once again, one of Minkowski’s comments leads us down a very logical path that confirms our longtime suspicions. Upon meeting Desmond, Minkowski says “You’re Desmond?” and then explains about how he was the communications officer, blah blah blah, they would frequently get calls that he wasn’t supposed to answer, blah blah blah, and THEY WERE FROM HIS GIRLFRIEND, PENNY WIDMORE.
I haven’t seen many people talking about this – but it’s pretty huge. If the Freightors were sent by anyone EXCEPT Widmore, how would they know that Penny was Desmond’s girlfriend? After all, the two hadn't really dated for like eight years. Furthermore, why would anyone EXCEPT Widmore tell them not to answer the phone? Factor in the scene of Widmore buying the Black Rock Journal and the following story starts to develop (warning: lengthy Brian storytelling below – none of which may turn out to be remotely true):
Widmore, always the businessman and entrepreneur when it comes to “developing industries” (like the Economist!) somehow hears rumors among his stuff rich white guy circles about this “magical Island” that could have all sorts of special properties that would make it valuable to people (like curing cancer, for one). However, Alvar Hanso refuses to sell out where the Island is located, no matter what the price. Unfortunately, Alvar gets old and dies, taking the secret of the Island to his grave with him. Eventually, his descendents fall upon some hard times, and are forced to start selling off the estate… including the Black Rock Journal.
Although many entrepreneurs attempt to bid outrageous prices for this Journal, Widmore wins out – and with it, gets some hints as to the location of the Island. Widmore spends the next few years searching for the Island, knowing it must be in some sort of “Bermuda Triangle” space due to the Journal, but is unable to find it. He even sets up different “races around the world” that crisscross different sections of the ocean in hopes that some contestant will inadvertently stumble upon it (see: Henry Gale in his hot air balloon, Desmond Hume in his sailboat).
Three years ago it finally happens – a contestant in one of his races turns up missing, and using the last known coordinates of this contestant, they are able to narrow down the possible location of the Island. But here’s the super ironic part – that contestant happens to be the man Widmore hates the most – Desmond.
No, I don’t think that Desmond ending up on the Island was part of some scheme by Widmore to get rid of him. Instead, I think it’s just a cruel twist of fate for both Desmond and Widmore. Desmond ends up in the one place that Widmore wants to find, but can’t get off to get to the one thing that he wants – Penny Widmore.
Once Desmond goes missing, Penny starts to question his visit from eight years ago, and in talking to his friend Donovan, finds that Desmond also visited him years prior, talking about his experiences of crashing on an Island and other equally insane thoughts like time travel. As she mentioned on her phone call to Desmond this week, she knows about the Island and has been researching it… just like dear old dad.
So now you have two people, both with a huge amount of resources, searching for the Island for two very different reasons. Penny employs the snowy listening station and makes repeat phone calls to anyone who will listen in that area of the ocean, whereas Charles employs the Freightors, hand selecting each individual for their ability to not only find – but then establish safety on the Island for him to begin his moneymaking schemes… most likely through picking up where the Dharma research on the Island left off.
Why did Naomi have a picture of Desmond? Because if she found Desmond, she knew that she would find the Island. Why did Miles have a picture of Ben? Because Charles knew that Ben would have the answers he needed about the Island and the experiments there, since he was the last surviving Dharmite. Why send Faraday and Charlotte? Because they would be the ones to figure out the funkiness of the Island and start back up the experiments.
It’s pretty out there, but I absolutely love the father vs. daughter dynamic in the fight for the Island. I love that it makes the Desmond-Penny love story the central story for the entire series of Lost – something that could provide the way off of the Island for our Survivors, prove that nothing can keep true love apart, and provides some very plausible explanations a lot of the strange variables we’ve seen thus far regarding the “off Island” stuff. It also solidifies Desmond as the most important character on the show." |

Completely away from last night's episode, I've been starting to wonder if Sayid is indeed one of the Oceanic 6 or if he got off the island w/ Ben at a different point. The reason being that Jack, Kate, and Hurley are celebrities and everyone knows their face. That guy Sayid capped on the golf course had no clue who he was until he introduced himself. Seems like you couldn't really be a hitman if you were one of the most recognizable faces on the planet. Am I missing anything here? 3/7/2008 7:08:35 AM |
dzags18 All American 5694 Posts user info edit post |
Sure you could, just as long as you make sure nobody knows you are a hitman. Based on how long Sayid was in germany its not like he was killing people every few days, he was waiting a long time in between. And he might not be that recognizable, just because they are part of the Oceanic Six doesnt mean they were like Jack and Kate who seem to have gone on talk shows and are widely known. Not to mention the promo for sayids episode said "And another of the oceanic six is revealed".
And there are two members left of the oceanic six... next week we find out who the rest of the six are, and its a Jin/Sun episode. That tell you anything?
