that was the most bullshit penalty I have seen in a long time
I didn't see that Puyol did a thing wrong
but I can understand it being called, I suppose...in real-time it probably looked very bad
also, super coaching by Guardiola...presumably at halftime he said "Hey guys, just chip one over that high Arsenal line, and you're in" ] 4/1/2010 9:19:46 PM |

Really?
That was one of the most clear-cut penalties I've seen in my life. He stopped the obvious scoring opportunity.
Was it a red? Debatable, but err on the side of giving a red. 4/2/2010 1:33:36 AM |

Just watched it again, I'm not sure what you guys are seeing to make it "clear-cut" and "blatant."
Is it a penalty? Maybe. Can I see why it was called? Sure.
But Puyol is just making a move for the ball and he actually tries to pull up to avoid hitting Fabregas. There's not even an actual challenge on him, he just gets in the way. 4/2/2010 9:50:55 AM |

I, for one, would like to play this sport that aimorris is watching where defenders who stop clear goal scoring opportunities do not get PKs awarded against them 4/2/2010 4:15:21 PM |
aimorris All American 15213 Posts user info edit post |
So what you're saying is an attacker always has the right to a 50/50 ball, regardless of the nature of the tackle? How would this have been called at midfield? He didn't stick his leg out to trip him, he didn't pull his jersey, and he didn't grab him with his arm. He was just there at the exact same time as Fabregas. He's clearly trying to get the ball first, doesn't get there, tries to pull up to avoid making contact with him, doesn't succeed in doing so, and the foul is called.
I don't have a problem with the penalty being called especially from how it looked in real-time. But it was neither blatant or clear-cut. But the red card was harsh no matter what you think of the challenge. 4/2/2010 5:23:40 PM |
JTMONEYNCSU All American 24529 Posts user info edit post |
that wouldve been called a foul in midfield too, granted it wouldve looked funny. you arent allowed to stop a person's pass or shot in the manner that puyols did whether by accident or purposeful its always gonna be called. i agree the red was harsh, i said that after i saw a good replay of it too. even in real time it looked harsh. 4/2/2010 5:37:32 PM |
aimorris All American 15213 Posts user info edit post |
well I'm just wondering, what do you think the foul would be classified as? I guess you could say obstruction but that's not a penalty. But you can't just say it's a penalty because it should be. 4/2/2010 5:44:33 PM |
JTMONEYNCSU All American 24529 Posts user info edit post |
it was a clear goal scoring chance. more than 50% of the time fabregas prob scores that. i see this similar to someone who runs over someone from behind. they most likely dont do it on purpose but its a penalty in the box. i mean by the rules, puyols is the last man on a clear goal scoring chance, so technically the ref didnt do anything wrong...but its gonna be controversial, nonetheless 4/2/2010 5:50:21 PM |

I mean, like the actual law, which would it be classified as? charging at an opponent?

i cant believe were arguing this with some of the more blatant dives that have already happened in uefa competition already this season
and if youre looking for an answer he either tripped or tackled him...it also looks like he barged him in the back. in real speed it looks an easy PK and red card foul actually from the ref's viewpoint
he actually prob doesnt score that over 50% of the time haha, maybe a bit exaggerated since he has to hit it on the volley. but puyols definitely prevents him from doing that without playing the ball. that motion of him looking like hes backing off is him being a professional...he knew what he was trying to do

well the argument to me was that it wasn't as blatant as you guys want to act like it was. I had a problem with the red card, not necessarily the penalty
I just like to argue about soccer related shit 4/2/2010 10:37:44 PM |

i saw the play, it was pretty weird. probably a penalty cuz puyol didnt get the ball, but it was almost like fabregas kicked puyol. it shouldn't have been a red for sure. i don't think it was clear cut tho. in real time, it looks like pujols just shoves fabregas, but seeing it in slow motion, fabregas gets his leg stuck between puyols. I dunno, its not an easy play to call. 4/2/2010 11:08:27 PM |

It's a foul because he trips Fabregas without getting anywhere near the ball. It doesn't matter if he meant to do it or not. A clumsy tackle is usually regarded as a foul. At that point it has to be a red card because Puyol denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity. It might seem harsh to a casual fan but at that point it has to be done simply because that's a rule. It is actually very clear cut. Unusual, but clear cut nonetheless. 4/3/2010 1:25:49 AM |
