Ken Tysiac's online chat today
Quote : | "11:59 [Comment From kentysiac] Hi everybody. I'm looking forward to what should be an entertaining game tonight between N.C. State and South Carolina. The weather is absolutely gorgeous here in Raleigh. Who's got questions? 12:00 [Comment From Edward Franklin] Hey Ken. Been hearing a lot about Wilson, Baker, et al. I'm more interested in how you think State's defense will handle Spurrier's attack. 12:02 kentysiac: Edward, I don't think they'll handle it well. State's defensive line is as solid as any in the ACC, but I've got a lot of questions about the Wolfpack secondary, and the boundary linebacker slot without Nate Irving there. Spurrier will find a way to exploit the corners and Maddox/Manning in the passing game. Question is, does South Carolina have skill players good enough to really hurt N.C. State? I'm not sure. 12:02 [Comment From mike] Yeah, can USC score? 12:05 Rachel Carter: Some minor technical difficulties from Ken's bunker. Stay with us ... 12:12 [Comment From kentysiac] I'm back 12:12 kentysiac: Mike: I think USC can score. i think Garcia is ready to show he's as good as his recruiting pub indicated, and NCSU's defense is not that good. 12:13 [Comment From Carl] Any thoughts about the venue? The "new" Carter-Finley can be surprisingly rowdy and loud. 12:13 kentysiac: I love Carter-Finley. It's loud and the fans there care passionately about football. O'Brien says the Pack has the best fans in the state, and it's tough to argue that, although both ECU and App State have an argument, too 12:13 [Comment From Wesley] Who do you think will make a name for themself in tonights game? 12:14
12:14 kentysiac: Audie Cole. I keep hearing great things about the sophomore who's a first-year starter at LB. He's fast enough to cover in the open field, and strong enough to be a force rushing the QB. 12:14 [Comment From Tex] Hi This is Tex from Texas. We do this a lot on our local paper. Can you tell me if Spurrier is in danger of losing his job. we dont get much news about him out here. 12:15 kentysiac: Hi Tex. I think Spurrier's pretty safe. He's still pretty popular with the fans at S.C., and he's only missed a bowl one time in his tenure. He hasn't made S.C. a contender in the tough SEC East Division. But nobody else ever has either. 12:16 [Comment From Ismael] Have you had any chance to see or talk to players/coaches about the progress of Michael Lemon? 12:16 kentysiac: Coach O'Brien is high on Michael Lemon. I don't get to see practice, so I can't vouch for it personally. But the fact that he's debuting in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart at DE says O'Brien believes in him. 12:17 [Comment From John] Why are they playing on Thurday night? I cannot find it listed on national cable television stations. 12:18 kentysiac: The game is on ESPN, John. They are playing on Thursday night because ESPN created this package several years ago that gives teams national exposure all to themselves in prime time on a weeknight. It can be a headache for the fans, but a plus for recruiting to play on Thursday night. 12:18 [Comment From Russell] Ken it appears from what I am reading that NC State and their fans have come to a foregone conclusion that South Carolina is coming to Raleigh to let the Pack win as a payback from last year. Well I have news for you, USC has a chip on their shoulder and they are determined to come to Raleigh and win tonight. Everyone from the bookies to the newspaper guys seem to think this game is a given for NC State. Russell Wilson is an outstanding football player, but one player cannot win a game. USC never lost to Kentucky when they had Jared Lorenzen and they have seen the best in Tim Tebo, Jevan Sneed and so on. USC'S defense will show up and they will win this game tonight. 12:20 kentysiac: Russell, I think it's interesting to see the dynamics of this game. Usually one team or another enters a game with some trepidation. But the people I talk to in Columbia seem almost insulted that N.C. State thinks it has a chance to win the game. And the N.C. State fans are similarly extremely confident. That's what makes this a great game. I think SC's defense is really good, but so is NCSU's offense. That's the key matchup. 12:20 [Comment From WRV] I know State defense is suspect, but with RW supposedly so good, how is State only favored by 4 or 5 points? 12:22 kentysiac: WRV: I don't think you're giving South Carolina enough credit. Remember, the Gamecocks beat N.C. State 34-0 last season. The fact that N.C. State is favored at all after that is remarkable. The Gamecocks have a strong defense and a promising young quarterback, and I don't expect them to come into Raleigh and just get steamrolled. I think this is a close game that could go either way. 12:22 [Comment From CaryWolf] Is Russell Wilson going to be hearing footsteps tonight, or is the line going to do a better job of making sure he doesn't get decapitated again? 12:23 kentysiac: I think the line will do a better job this season. Four of the five starters have started at least 11 games, so there's some quality experience there. It wasn't the line's fault that Wilson got knocked out of last year's game. Wilson was supposed to hand off and didn't on the play when he suffered the concussion. 12:27 [Comment From Bob] How is the Toney Baker-Jamelle Eugene backfield rotation going to to work for State? 12:29 kentysiac: Bob, Baker's going to start, but Eugene is going to play plenty. The one common misconception is the idea that both backs are going to be on the field at the same time. I don't get to watch practice, but I'd be shocked if that happens. In college football today, you need two strong backs to get through the course of a game and a season without those guys getting too banged up. Think of this situation as similar to Andre Brown with Eugene last season. Both will play, and the coaches will substitute them according to situations and just the feel of the game. On the goal line going in, you'll probably see Baker more because he's stronger. In passing situations, Eugene will play more. 12:30 [Comment From WRV] Is the "Ole Ball Coach" still calling his own offensive plays? or has he turned over that duty? 12:31 kentysiac: WRV, I'm not 100 percent sure because I don't know the Gamecocks as well as some of the reporters in Columbia do, but I thought he gave up play calling last season and then took it back over for this season. I'm pretty sure Spurrier will be making the calls tonight. 12:32 [Comment From Wesley] How do you see Glennon performing in his debut tonight and if it is a close game do you think TOB will put him in there? 12:34 kentysiac: Wesley, O'Brien is going to put Glennon in the game for a series or two in the second quarter just to get him some experience, regardless of the score. But make no mistake about it, this is Russell Wilson's team. O'Brien made that point abundantly clear yesterday when he was talking to the Raleigh Sports Club. There is no rotation, so to speak. Glennon's just coming in to get his feet wet. As for how Glennon will do, the coaching staff has nothing but good things to say about him, but I expect a significant dropoff in the offense when he's in the game. It's a tough environment, and I just think Russell Wilson is really good. 12:37 [Comment From James] Ken: Which team would you give the advantage to in terms of Special Teams? 12:37 kentysiac: I think T.J. Graham tips the 12:38 kentysiac: Sorry...T.J. Graham tips the advantage to N.C. State. He's just such a good return man that he can change the game in one play, particularly on kickoffs. Czajkowski is solid for N.C. State at place-kicker, and the punting is a question mark with Jeff Ruiz, but Graham is just plain special. 12:38 [Comment From WRV] I think RW if pretty good, but what if, and I know that this is a stretch, it is night and day between Glennon and RW, with G performing better? Is that even remotely possible. 12:40 kentysiac: WRV, I think it's remotely possible. But I doubt that's going to happen. Russell Wilson is a better quarterback than Mike Glennon, and you will see that on the field tonight. There will be no QB controversy after this game. 12:43 [Comment From PWO] Does South Carolina get a running game going tonight? 12:45 kentysiac: I don't see any reason to think South Carolina will get a running game going tonight. They haven't throughout the course of Spurrier's tenure, and they're counting on a freshman. And they're going up against a stout defensive line. I think South Carolina will hurt N.C. State's defense tonight, but the Gamecocks will do it with the passing game. 12:45 [Comment From Enrico Palazzo] Win or lose, how important is this game to setting up the rest of the year for N.C. State? If they have to lose, it's probably better to take a hit early rather than once ACC games start, right? 12:48 kentysiac: Enrico, hope you enjoy the national anthem tonight. I think this game is critical to setting up the rest of the season for both teams. South Carolina closed last season on a down note and really needs a shot in the arm to start this season. Because of the way N.C. State's schedule shapes up, if the Wolfpack loses I wouldn't expect much improvement for the team over the next two weeks because they play FCS teams that won't challenge them. That would be a bad thing for the team's development. Guys, thanks for stopping by the chat today. I've got some Saturday preview stuff to knock out, so I've got to get to work on that. Hope you enjoy the game. It should be a dandy.

Vet lot opens at 6, though I imagine it'll be a giant clusterfuck getting in there once they open it up. Also kind of puts a damper on tailgating.
Is the entire fairgrounds lot permits these days? What about pay parking?

football is finally back!!!! Thank goodness, what a boring summer for a Reds fan (as every summer has been the past decade)
My 2 Keys:
1. Will Wilson be as good as last year down the stretch? Can we expect to see what we saw the last few games last year all year or was that more of a "hot streak?" I tend to think we will see more of the same due to the fact that he has had another whole offseason to prepare. He is good enough that he gives us a chance to win every game, literally, if he is playing well.
2. Has Spurrier developed Garcia? He has gotten all the reps with the first team this year and we decorated coming out of high school? Will he finally live up to his billing or will he still be so mistake prone? I tend to think somewhere in between. This was the first offseason that he wasn't fighting for the job and has been able to be comfortable as the number one guy all year long. However, most of the time if a guys starts out mistake prone it is usually very hard to correct. Very rarely does a guy start out his career as a big mistake guy and change to mr. consistency by the end of his career. I expect to see some improvement from him but not a TON.
I say this is very close all the way with Wilson making a play down the stretch to win the game for us, whether it be his feet or his arm.
