from Peter King's MMQB:

Quote :
"Talk about a scenario you couldn't see coming.

"I know we committed to Matt Moore,'' Carolina coach John Fox said of his presumed starter over the weekend, "but who saw this coming? I mean, Jimmy Clausen's just too good.''

He's right. Clausen with the 48th pick isn't in the same league with some of the great steals of all time (I don't think) but I think it'll end up the biggest shock of this draft when we look at it 10 years from now. The guy plays hurt, throws well on the run, is smart and productive. Maybe he's not the kind of guy you want to go on vacation with. Maybe he is full of himself. But what's Jay Cutler? Philip Rivers?

In doing pre-draft research, not that he thought he'd have a chance to get Clausen, Fox talked to Charlie Weis, his good friend and the former Irish coach. Weis and Fox are close. Fox is sure Weis wouldn't lie to him. "Charlie said he's probably the best he's ever had,'' Fox said. "He said, 'Take this guy. Trust me.' Everyone I talked to, including a couple of people at Notre Dame, said the character issue was b.s. So we picked him.''

The GM, Marty Hurney, said he was so excited awaiting the pick that he was shaking. With a strong offensive line, good running game and a defense that should hold the scores down, Carolina is a great landing spot for Clausen. "We talked after we got picked,'' Golden Tate said. "And the one thing we both agreed on is that it's a lot more important where you go than how high you go.''"

So in essence, I should feel good about Clausen and the possibility of him starting next season? (I'm still riding with Moore at this point).

All those other teams passed on Clausen for a reason...I guess 6-2 isn't proof enough that they already have a good young QB. What we needed was a vet, not a rookie.

and

Quote :
"and a defense that should hold the scores down"

is a HUGE stretch considering they did next to nothing to address what was probably our main area of need...the D line.

our defense played very solid the last part of the season, and we finished ranked #8 overall in the league.

yea our D-line will be young, but hell...you have to play young guys at some point. we've got some size in there with Tank Tyler and Louis Leonard, and i like the DE from Ole Miss we drafted. Him and everette brown could be a nasty bookend combo.

Larry Coyer has put together some very good defenses in Indy using crappy DTs. He had bums like Raheem Brock starting when they won the SB in 2006.

His D is reliant on great edge rushers, a solid group of linebackers, and a smart secondary with safeties deep to prevent the big play. If they can get another edge rusher like Osi, they could have a formidable D this season.

we get back lb jamar williams. no idea who that is

this wont be as big a loss as it's made out to be, harris is probably the most overrated player on the team. still, he's a guy you like to root for and the guy replacing him (likely godfrey) sucks

I don't know if Martin is physical enough against the run. Plus, Chris Harris is really good at creating turnovers.

I too would like to know why the hell we traded Chris Harris for a dude I've never heard of.

I agree Harris was a little overrated, but he was an intimidator in the secondary. More than that, he's a guy everybody on the team seemed to love -- one of those classic locker-room leader guys

From what I'm hearing, Harris has been bashing the Panthers' FO on Twitter for a while now. Probably talked his way right out of Charlotte.

"Jamar Williams heads to Carolina in deal for Harris

So the unofficial Chris Harris trade is now official, according to the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune.

Harris will re-join the Bears, almost certainly as a starter. Linebacker Jamar Williams heads to Carolina. Williams will add depth on the weak side for the Panthers with Thomas Davis recovering from a torn ACL.

Williams had some decent moments last year, recording 20 sacks in a game he started for Lance Briggs. He was a restricted free agent, which is one reason the Bears were willing to move him."

John Henderson, former pro-Bowler was cut by the Jaguars today and would be a good fit at D-tackle.

Chris Harris was garbage in coverage, and didn't have much recovery speed

however, every time he tackled someone i expected the ball to fly out

i remember him talking about coming up in the Bears' defense (around the time they went to the SB) and he said they were coached to always put their helmet on the ball or strip it

the man forced some timely fumbles, and that will be missed

8 forced fumbles in 2007, 2 in each of the last 2 years

Not a speed guy, more a run stuffing safety

In our division, playing Brees and Ryan twice a year, I think we need more ballhawks

Godfrey and Martin should be sufficient, tho I would love for us to look at Darren Sharper

Looks like we tried to trade Harris during the draft, no one bit. We were planning on cutting him by the end of the week of we didn't get any trade offers before camp. So I guess we can consider this a victory for getting something for him.

getting something for him is good, plus i think his salary is higher than Jamar Williams', so we saved some money too

he shouldn't have been airing dirty laundry for the public to see...i wonder if he did it on purpose to get off a team going into youth mode

I just checked the schedule again..... what BULLSHIT.

The ONLY primetime game we have is vs. the Steeles which may be a cool game to watch but its one of ESPN's monopoly DishNetwork games that you can not get unless you have satellite or feel like stuffing yourself into a bar.

We have 1 late Sunday slot at 4:15 vs. the Seahawk, otherwise all of our games are at 1pm.

I am glad Big Ben and the Steelers have 5 prime-time games so we can watch him throw interceptions and rape the cheerleaders on the sidelines during half time.

We also get 4 prime time and 3 late 4:15 slots to see Eli's fudge packed in as he gets sacked and for him to cry after the Giants lose.

we're a mid-market team that finished 8-8, what did you expect, a primetime game every other week?

The one prime time game is the NFL Network Thursday night game. Thus you must have DirectTV to get the NFL network or go to a bar that has NFL network. You would think the NFL would create one stipulation to allow broadcast coverage of a Thursday night game within the "home" region of the featured teams (except maybe when certain blackout rules apply) for the benefit of keeping fans happy. Nope fuck fans that do not get NFL endorsed satellite TV, do not or can not go to the bar to watch it (i.e. families , elderly, etc) or who do not have the time/money to attend the thursday night game.

I think ONE sunday night prime time or MNF game and a couple 4:15 slot games woudl be adequate. 8-8 is not like we were in the damn gutter all season.

Let's look at other teams...

Rams (worst team last year in NFL)- 8 late slot Sunday games 0 primetime.
Redskins - 3 late slot Sunday games 3 primetime games (2 sunday, 1 MNF)
Titans- 2 late slot Sunday games 2 prime time games (1 sunday, 1 NFL Thurs)
Bears- 4 prime time games

Also applying your logic (at least concerning the record part), why do the steelers deserve 5 prime time slots?? The steelers have more Prime time games than either super bowl team (saints, colts).

The NFL Network isn't owned by ESPN ... it's owned by the NFL

And if you're stuffing yourself inside a bar to watch the game, you might just want to go to a bigger bar.

Typo sorry. I meant the NFL's dish network but my point still stands. My bad about the confusion.

You are missing the point though. How many fans are being alienated that would like to see their team play. Maybe I should tell my grandfather to man it up and head over to Buffalo Wild Wings if he wants to see the Panthers v. Steelers game. I am sure people in the Steeler home region hate this more than we do because "going out" on a thursday night could mean driving through a damn blizzard in late December.

dooopty de dooo

oh no i'm a Retard!! Since being upset that one's team is only given the crap time slots every week makes one a candidate of being of low mental capability. I am sure you are a "early bird gets the worm" kind of douche but when going to the game I prefer tailgating during the afternoon (not 7am) before going into the game, having friends over grilling/drinking during prime time games preferably my team, and/or not bolting to the bar at noon every sunday to make it in time to watch my team.

thegoodlife3 probably is a Steelers fan. I bet you'd be bitching though if this year NCSU had all noon games except the UNC game which is in chapel-hill.

BTW lets look at the ram's schedule (ZOMG NFC WEST HUR THIS OBVIOUSLY INVALIDATES YOUR ARGUMENT RETARD).....

* Sunday, September 12 Arizona 3:15 p.m. NFC-West HOME
* Sunday, September 19 at Oakland 3:15 p.m.
* Sunday, September 26 Washington 3:15 p.m. NFC-East Opponent HOME
* Sunday, October 3 Seattle Noon
* Sunday, October 10 at Detroit Noon
* Sunday, October 17 San Diego Noon
* Sunday, October 24 at Tampa Bay Noon
* Sunday, October 31 Carolina Noon
* Sunday, November 7 BYE
* Sunday, November 14 at San Francisco 3:15 p.m.
* Sunday, November 21 Atlanta 3:15 p.m. NFC South Opponent Home
* Sunday, November 28 at Denver 3:15 p.m.
* Sunday, December 5 at Arizona 3:15 p.m.
* Sunday, December 12 at New Orleans 3:15 p.m. NFC South Opponent Home maybe we can give them this one since they are playing the super bowl champ.

* Sunday, December 19 Kansas City Noon
* Sunday, December 26 San Francisco Noon
* Sunday, January 2 at Seattle 3:15 p.m.

So please explain how St. Louis which is a Central Time zone team (just like N.O, Chicago, Kansas City, etc) rationalize the team to get more sunday late slots just for being in the NFC West ...

They have 3 late slot home games (3 more than the panthers) and one away late slot game (not including their west coast division rivals). The panthers on the other hand have 0 if you exclude the one West Coast away game they have.

BTW i never like the idea of the NFL Network Thursday night game...

This lack of prime TV-spot placement is Richardson's fault for bombing our offseason.

If all of our offseason moves weren't targeted at REBUILDING, then ratings-eaters that make the schedules would have given us some better cheddar.

Even our own fanbase knows this wont be a COMPETING year, so why should we get any prescheduled primetime? The ratings-eaters won't make any $$$!

[Edited on April 29, 2010 at 5:47 PM. Reason : if we start out 10-0, we will get plenty of primetime]

^for real

with the O-line and running backs, that's at least worth a few wins right there

and i wouldn't be so quick to underestimate the defense...Ron Meeks has a knack for bringing the best out of his players, which we never had with Trgovac

just look at who he helped develop while he was in Indy

the d-line is iffy, but it will be settled by the end of training camp. if they need more help they will sign a quality vet.
