You can have a medical redshirt after you've had a "normal" redshirt. The point is meaningless though as he is fine and will see snaps in most of our games this year. Edit to say that I'm probably wrong about that the medical redshirt deal. Just guessing.

You cannot get a medical "redshirt" year, however you can get a medical hardship year of eligibility. Its all in the nomenclature. Some people are just being overly picky. The premise remains, an extra year of eligibility due to medical issues.
Of course the point is moot as he will be fine. 9/5/2010 12:05:38 PM |

TONEY BAKER GOT A MEDICAL HARSHIP WAIVER BECAUSE HE MISSED 2 YEARS DUE TO INJURIES, MIKE GLENNON IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR A REDSHIRT YEAR BECAUSE HE ALREADY USED HIS 2 YEARS AGO. IF HE WERE TO MISS THE REST OF THIS SEASON AND ANOTHER SEASON DUE TO INJURIES THEN HE COULD GET A MEDICAL HARDSHIP WAIVER AND GET AN EXTRA YEAR OF ELIGIBILITY. WHY DO YOU THINK NATE IRVING IS A SENIOR AND NOT A JUNIOR? BECAUSE HE ALREADY USED HIS REDSHIRT SO HE COULDNT REDSHIRT LAST SEASON.

No it's not, because you have to miss 2 seasons due to injuries to get the hardship waiver and thus Mike Glennon is not eligible for a medical redshirt if he were to miss the rest of the season which is the whole point of the argument.

They need to do something to make it more efficient all around. It was absolutely retarded the bottleneck that was at the entrance underneath the scoreboard where you had two full gates above Section 1 (where coincidentally I was sitting) which were students only that had attendants sitting there dicking around with no lines.

^^^Meh, beat me to it. Chris Colmer didn't miss 2 seasons with parsonage turner syndrome. He redshirted out of high school, but became ill his senior season. He got a medical hardship waiver
Baker had never redshirted when he got hurt. Therefore, you are required to use you normal "redshirt" year for the injury. The 2nd year he got hurt, he had used his normal redshirt year, thus applied for a medical hardship 6th year and got it becuase it fit the "extreme/extenuating hardship" standards poorly defined by the NCAA
The reason Nate would be ineligible is becuase normally when you take a non-medical redshirt you are ineligible for a medical redshirt unless something drastic happens medically. Falling asleep while driving your car into a ravine doesn't really qualify as extreme and unforseen medical hardship.

I think armor is tripping over semantics, so let me point out that nowhere in the NCAA compliance handbook are the terms "redshirt" or "medical redshirt" used. The rule is that a player has five seasons to complete four years of eligibility. Beyond that, there are situations where a sixth year of eligibility is granted -- one such situation is the medical hardship waiver pasted above. These are approved on a per-player basis: Baker, Colmer, and others have been OKed, but others (Ben Mauk comes to mind) are routinely denied. 9/5/2010 1:29:31 PM |

In the most literal sense of reading the rule he's actually right. That said, if a player redshirts then has a future catastrophic injury, they can petition for a 6th year. Oftentimes they are granted it.
Glennon couldnt use a medical hardship this year becuase that only applies to players that do play in games, but then have thier season cut short. You basically beg to allow the player to use that as his normal 'redshirt' year even though he already played a bit.
That said, if Glennon was gone for the season this year...and he's already redshirted.... after his senior year he could petition for an extra year. It's rarely granted to non-seniors, but it happens

5 to play 4. The extra season is the redshirt season. 5 to play 4 PERIOD (except for the very rare 6th year waiver)
Medical hardship waiver (sometimes referred to as a medical redshirt) = played in 4 games or fewer, all in the first half of the season, got a season ending injury. Does not apply to pre-season injuries -- those guys just take regular old redshirts.
6th year waiver = injured for more than 1 season (vague) or in cases of extreme hardship (also vague)
Chris Colmer got a 6th year waiver because his Parsons Turnashsodfja Syndrome was sufficiently "extreme" in the eyes of the NCAA despite the fact that his regular redshirt year was not injury related.
Toney Baker got a 6th year waiver because he missed two full seasons due to injury.

Was just going to ask about this...yeah, its not my internet, as every other game replay seems to play fine for the most part. But for whatever reason, this one stops after a couple of minutes (if that) and will not start again (without completely restarting the feed from the beginning). I emailed their customer support and of course got the canned response about video being CPU intensive, etc etc. For whatever reason, the one game on here I actually want to watch is almost completely unplayable...so very typical. 9/6/2010 1:02:46 PM |
