I will say having a perpetual calendar is really nice. The biggest thing I hated about my Quartz Victorinox was fixing the date every few months.

For me it's the atomic clock radio functionality paired with the solar charging. Basically a zero maintenance watch. It's always accurate to the second no matter where you are. Obviously until it breaks haha.

^ I'm sort of a noob that caught the watch bug in the past year. My thoughts are below, and if someone wants to correct anything I've said...feel free. I do not pretend to be an expert, but I am kind of addicted to watches now after buying my first automatic a year ago

First thing is....what's important to you? Is it looks, quality, watch heritage, value for your $$, impressing others, longevity, etc?

I'm not an open heart or Skeleton fan (The opening to see the balance wheel in your watch).

Momo is not a sought after brand from horologists.... they're a name brand that outsources watchmaking to others (Think: Michael Kors type). Generally, great watches come from watch making brands. Momo also suffers from Invicta-itus....where it tries to convince you the MSRP is $38,000 but you're getting for a steal at $150. That's their marketing style.

The watch linked has a Miyota movement and a Mineral Crystall.

A much nicer watch (mechanically)...probably found for the same or same-ballpark money would have an ETA (Swiss) movement and a sapphire crystal....which is much tougher, scratch resistant, and glare resistant.

The watch you linked is a Pilot watch with an Open Heart design (Which is weird...?).
Check out watches from Tissot and Hamilton. Both are reputable swiss manufacturers with a long history of watchmaking, renowned for their quality and value, and they should have some options in your price range. The Tissot PRC-200, The Tissot Visodate (pictured on this page above), the Hamilton Khaki or Hamilton Jazzmaster are all very popular and raved about amongst watch enthusiasts and have some options in your range I believe. Barnhart is also a popular Botique US watchmaker pretty well thought of, is a little cheaper (Use Miyota movements as well)a, and has plenty of options in your price range.

Steinhardt makes some nice watches in this range...Orient is also a brand people rave about for quality for the $$$


Before spending money, go to a watch enthusiast forum like http://www.watchuseek.com/ and learn what's out there and what is important.

If you like the looks of the one you linked....get it. Its a personal choice...just offering suggestions based on what I have learned in my short time being addicted to watches

Also....the best quality for your money under $1000 is generally a plain old Seiko.


They are very ho-hum in the eyes of many since they have so many offerings and are common, but whether you're spending $200 or up to $15,000+ for a Grand Seiko, they're really hard to beat for the money

I think that's a really rare and expensive complication, particularly for an automatic. I think most are like $20k plus... Annual calendar is a bit cheaper, but still very rare for an auto

THe only perpetual calendar automatics I know would be like a Patek Philippe. Might be a bit outside of his budget

You mean specifically for an automatic right? Many cheaper quartz/solar watches have perpetual calendars. I assume it being automatic complicates things? I imagine when the watch isn't being used you'd have to cycle through all days until present and that wouldn't be good.

That is correct. I think it's common on quartz, but not autos.

Adjusting the date and such can get annoying at times. It will also stop if you dont a) get a winder or b) wear it/wind it every 48 hours or so.

Auto's are fancy and great pieces of workmaship...no one buys them for practicality!


I went from a 15 year old Citizen Eco-Drive Quartz watch to a Tissot Le Locle Auto...took some getting used to as far as convenience. No doubt the auto's are much much "nicer" watches

people always make a big deal of changing the date an automatic. It takes me 30 seconds to reset the date and time on an auto that i haven't worn in a few days. It's honestly not that big of a headache. i'm sure if your watch collection contained a dozen automatics that you were always changing out, then maybe so. But a handful of watches, it's not a big deal.

+1 vote for Seiko and Orient.



I have had my eye on a Christopher Ward diver lately. But, also like the Tudor diver as well.

and their is a really nice Seiko tach that is very retro, but it's quartz movement

It's a reissue of the model worn by Sigourney Weaver in Aliens. At first I kind of hated it but it's grown on me ever since I read about it. Also Aliens is my jam.

I really like the Tudor Black bay. Really expensive though (I assume that's what you're referring to)

If I got a sub $1000 diver, I think i'd try to find a Halios Bluering. No idea how it is as a dive watch, but man its sexy (imo). Only 300 made, so now it's all second hand and costs $texas. I'm a sucker for blue watch hands for some reason

Honestly most of the watches posted in this thread I find pretty ugly or just uninspired. But you're right, buying a watch just because it's a "good deal" doesn't make a lot of sense. I work in IT and we have quite a few servers in different time zones, so it could come in handy there. Otherwise, I just liked how it looked - I like a busy watch face. To be honest, I would have liked to get one with a perpetual calendar, but they were a little more than I wanted to pay for my first "real" watch.

I would've also preferred a different bezel, but oh well.
