I am probably more down on NC State athletics than ever but I cannot blame TOB with his handling of this situation.
Say you meet this hot girl and you have a great time with her. You want something more serious but she can't commit. In the meantime, you meet another girl who is not quite as hot but has potential if she gets a tit job and loses a few pounds. She isn't trying to fuck your friend with more money and the relationship could go places.
You gotta stick with the loyal one. TOB is a man of his word. I hope it doesn't end up fucking him and I have respect for his decision. 5/1/2011 2:09:37 AM |

Wilson has a contract with the Colorado Rockies to play BASEBALL
they have said they will not allow him to spend the fall playing college football. if he, god forbid, breaks his throwing arm, he becomes a wasted pick for the Rockies and he may never be the player they expected with the 4th round pick they spent on him. 5/1/2011 3:19:29 AM |

Why did Russell need spring and full summer workouts? BECAUSE WE LOST MOST OF OUR RECEIVERS AND ARE CHANGING OUR STYLE OF PLAY. Last year we returned pretty much everyone and we didn't make any changes, ergo easier for Wilson to come back try to play catch up. He did ok but his timing was off all season. He hasn't been as good as his first year. We made a lot of personnel changes and design and play changes that Russell needed to be in spring and full practices for if he wanted to start. He chose to play baseball.
This was pretty much how it was going to go down the moment he signed a contract with the Rockies. 5/1/2011 8:47:14 AM |

That's why he asked for an open competition this fall. If he beat MG out while mike was running a system designed for him, then so be it.
That's what real fans wanted. That's what a performance-based organization would want.
Instead, losers like TOB and his ball-lickers such as packboozie wanted to kick Wilson out in favor of some loser on the bench.
If Wilson did only fall practice and beat glennon out for the job, so be it. Competition is how you get the best product on the field, not this communist, crony bullshit.
Stability is not more important than winning, contrary to what the losers think. Risk averse faggots crave stability, and their little heads get shell-shocked by any sort of deviation from the plan. This is why TOB is such a terrible game coach.

How can you say this after saying that TOB should have been willing to bench Glennon for RW?
Stability means being able to recruit well and win consistently year after year. Who would want to go to a school with a coach who is willing to go back on his word and bench a starter like Glennon for someone who wasn't willing to contribute during Spring practice?
I LOVE RW just as much as the next guy and this situation sucks but I can't fault TOB for thinking ahead and sticking to his guns rather than basing his decision off the emotions of the moment.5/1/2011 9:52:55 AM |

You guys will learn once you get into the real world that arbitrary deadlines and loyalty tests are the sign of a poor manager. The people who admire TOB's style are themselves poor managers or have been indoctrinated by poor managers.
And if a recruit doesn't come here because he is afraid he will lose a job through competition, WE DON'T WANT HIM. This is a performance-based organization (right??). The best players love competition. They don't shy away from it, and if they lose, they don't cry about it. 5/1/2011 10:12:18 AM |

TOB never said RW couldn't come back in the fall, but he did say he'd be second string. Sounds like Wilson wasn't interested in competing for a position he thought should be his. Even if Glennon was the starter for a game or two RW could of busted his ass and been number one by week 2 or 3 if he earned it. Seems like RW was a little putoff by having to earn the chance to start, and said peace out. I wish him all the best, but as you said:

I'll tell you what it's not -- it's saying one guy is going to be the starter no matter what and one guy is going to be on the bench no matter what, months in advance.
You seem to think that is an equal opportunity. I do not.
---
Anyway, you guys don't understand that Russell Wilson is our whole team, even more than Rivers made the Amato teams. At least we sometimes had a good defense and good run game when Rivers was here.
Under TOB, we have had shitty to mediocre defense, shitty special teams, shitty running, shitty time management, shitty OL play, and ho hum play calling. The only reason TOB teams have done anything well is because of RW making up for out deficiencies with his legs and decision making.
We've seen it before -- this is a great QB making up for a bad team and questionable coach. 5/1/2011 10:37:09 AM |
jsausley All American 1031 Posts user info edit post |
Okay, I love football Jesus, but that's a little exaggerated.
A QB is nothing without his OL and his receiving corps. Yes, RW made a lot of plays out of nothing with his running game but some of those runs only happened because of our fairly strong OL, and he really didn't have the arm to make passes come unless the WRs were also on same page (this is evident from the Maryland game in which most of his passes were dropped).
And if you don't think the defense was good, why were we 29th overall in the country for Points Against, with three teams scoring less than 10 points on us, including a ranked WV in our bowl game?

There isn't a coach in this league who doesn't have a starter in mind for the upcoming fall season, that said, there also isn't a coach in this league who wouldn't make the adjustments neccesary to win if his starter wasn't getting the job done. RW simply did not want to entertain the idea of not having the starting spot. If he wanted the spot badly enough it was there for him to compete for. Does the guy with 4 months additional practice with a new offensive game plan, and a new set of wideouts have a head start, yes. Btw I don't know what nc state football team you watched last year, but our D played above avg for an NC State Squad and if I never have to watch a 45 yd RW prayer again I won't skip a beat. Don't get me wrong he was a big factor in our successes last season, but it's a bit delusional to say he was the only thing winning us games.5/1/2011 10:46:11 AM |

all i know is that TOB seems pretty fucking confident in Glennon. He usually doesn't say very many outlandish statements, so when he says that MG is as talented, possibly more so, as any QB he has ever had, I at least think there's a strong possibility our offense will be okay.
And I am stoked as hell to have Rashard Smith and Jarvis Byrd come back, those two plus Amerson make for a fine top 3 at the position. 5/1/2011 12:19:43 PM |

what im excited about re: Glennon is the fact that on obvious blitzing downs and when aggressive D's are showing blitz, we will now (should be able to anyway) have a QB who can take a 1-3 step drop and hit the slot guy on an inside slant for 15-20yrd gains. This alone will keep d's a little more honest. MG's gotta prove it of course, he's gonna be tested until he can start burning D's. But with RW it was practically not an option. 5/1/2011 12:50:02 PM |

I simply don't see how people can be that mad at TOB over this. If RW had come out and said he wanted to play again this fall in a timely manner then I feel like this could've been avoided. He didn't though and TOB had no choice other than to support MG. Let's say TOB allowed RW to come back this fall to 'compete' for the job. Let's say MG wins the competition and RW is standing on the sidelines. Does anyone think that the Rockies, RW, or a large contingent of NCSU fans would like for RW to be wasting his time with a clipboard?
I hope that RW tears it up this summer and the Rockies make him stay. That'd be a perfect to end all speculation on who we let him go to. I mean hell, his baseball season may overlap with the start of football season anyway. I just don't see the Rockies letting him play anywhere this fall. I also hope MG starts out the season on fire with the type of teams we play. With how big our O-Line is this year I feel like having a taller QB like MG is going to pay off for us. We just have to hope the O-Line can block better than they have in the past few seasons.
It was a no-win situation for how this was going to play out the minute he signed a contract with the Rockies and didn't immediately make up his mind for his future at NCSU. I wish him the best, but I feel like a TON of people are over-reacting to this situation.

I'd like to see Wilson succeed in baseball but if he chooses to play football and does well, that's fine too. I'll definitely be pulling for him. Anybody that hopes he fails at a different school if he plays football just so we don't "look bad" is being silly. 5/1/2011 3:19:21 PM |

TOB had to tool his O-line around Russell Wilson. A lot of shotgun sets because even if RW could take a 5 step drop, it would take at least 2-3 steps before RW can survey the field and see what's going on.
TOB now gets to tool his O-line around MG, which shouldn't be any different than the system he used with Matt Ryan. It's a system he's familiar with, and based on the fact that the O-line consists of his guys and they were probably tailored pick for this particular system, I expect to see a much better O-line this year. They won't have to be so concerned about creating such a wide pocket. I also expect the running game to be better since the O-line can get a good push before the D realizes we're going to run the ball. Linebackers were more likely to get into the backfield when we kept trying to work that inside draw or a toss sweep to the outside from the shotgun.
Our WRs are radically different. Our playcalling will be radically different. Our system will probably be a 180 of what RW was used to. TOB said that MG was going to be his guy. Great. I think TOB would have had enough sense to go with RW instead of MG if he was clearly the better guy. But would RW thrive in a system that's not tailored for him? I'm skeptical. Would he be clearly better than MG? Did TOB really want to go through the process of getting his guys to learn two different systems, one for RW and one for MG? I think RW could see that it was going to be difficult to earn his starting job based on what was in front of him.
If he wanted any chance of being able to be seen as a legitimate football prospect, he'd have to play in a system that played to his strengths, which TOB's new system does not. From a career perspective, this was the only thing he could do. 5/1/2011 5:26:33 PM |

RW's dream (according to the bio on his website) was to be an NFL quarterback and a MLB second base man.
If he came back to NCSU and sat on the bench, there's no way he would be drafted. I'm sure TOB would have been fine bringing him back as a secondary and potential starter if he performed well, and I'm sure RW would have been fine coming back to NCSU if it weren't for the fact that he would have literally no draft stock if he didn't start. He said himself that he loved our school.
But if he does want to play at the next level he has to go find a starting job and perform, so this was his only option. 5/1/2011 5:46:55 PM |
