The "attacking cops" in Oakland and "violence" was perpetrated by agent provocateurs. Most notably the group "Black Bloc" infiltrated and their only goal was to cause trouble. This unfortunately isn't the first time they have done this at notable protests. They tend to like ruining things for everyone else. 11/4/2011 9:01:08 AM |

MF Global ties awkward for Obama campaign - Washington Post - T.W. Farnam
Quote : | "The bankrupt financial company MF Global, now under federal investigation for possibly misusing clients’ money, is one of the top sources of contributions for President Obama’s reelection, complicating the campaign’s effort to turn public anger at Wall Street into a political advantage.
Employees of the company have given $108,650 to Obama’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee, according to federal records. MF Global’s chairman and chief executive, former New Jersey governor Jon Corzine, has raised at least $500,000 for the campaign and the DNC as a “bundler,” or volunteer fundraiser.
Mitt Romney is the only other major presidential candidate who reports receiving money from an MF Global employee, listing a $2,500 check from a company trader based in Stamford, Conn.
MF Global declared bankruptcy Monday, becoming the first U.S. victim of the European debt crisis. The FBI plans to conduct a preliminary probe into reports that hundreds of millions of dollars are missing from client accounts, federal law enforcement officials said.
The situation shows the political risk of relying on big money bundlers who can collect checks from friends and colleagues. Trouble can often rub off on candidates when they’re getting help from powerful public figures. Obama’s campaign has released a list of 350 bundlers who have raised at least $50,000, including 40 who have raised more than $500,000 each.
MF Global did not return a request for comment. A company attorney said in a recent bankruptcy court hearing that the company was not aware of any missing funds.
Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said in a statement that the president has been tougher on Wall Street companies than the Republican opposition.
“While the president passed Wall Street reform to combat risky financial deals that put our entire economy at risk,” LaBolt said, “Mitt Romney and the Republican candidates would let Wall Street write its own rules again no matter what the consequences for middle class families.”
The Obama campaign said it would return contributions from any MF Global employees, including Corzine, if they are charged with crimes related to the company’s collapse.
A Romney spokeswoman declined to comment.
MF Global recently made a bond sale with an unusual clause, saying the interest rate on the bonds would rise 1 percent if Corzine ended up being appointed to a post in the Obama administration. There has been speculation that he could be in line for Treasury secretary if the president is reelected.
The president has voiced support for recent protests against the financial industry and his campaign aides have said they plan to use the Occupy Wall Street movement to help build momentum for his reelection.
“I think it expresses the frustrations that the American people feel,” Obama said in a news conference last month. “The protesters are giving voice to a more broad based frustration with how our financial system works…. The American people understand that not everybody’s been following the rules, that Wall Street is an example of that.”
Obama held his first New York fundraiser for the reelection campaign at Corzine’s home on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, overlooking Central Park. Guests gave the maximum $35,800 donation to Obama and the DNC.
Obama’s links to financial companies don’t end with MF Global. The president has raised $15.6 million from the financial industry for his reelection effort and the DNC, according to a Washington Post analysis.
The third-largest source of cash for Obama is Chicago-based Chopper Trading, which employs a controversial high-frequency trading technique. The firm’s chief executive, Raj Fernando, held a fundraiser at his home with Vice President Biden and has raised at least $200,000 for the campaign and the DNC.
A federal study of the 2010 “flash crash,” when the stock market briefly lost $1 trillion in value only to recover shortly thereafter, placed the blame squarely on high-frequency trading technologies like those employed by Chopper. Other studies have cited high-frequency trading, which now accounts for more than half of all trades, as contributing to stock market volatility. A company spokesman did not return a request for comment, but defenders of the industry dispute those studies.
[b]Obama has raised $48,572 from Credit Suisse employees. The bank’s Swiss parent company is under investigation for allegedly helping Americans avoid taxes with offshore accounts. The bank is at top funder of Romney’s campaign, with workers donating $180,250.[b]" |

Any and every politician at that level is guaranteed to have benefitted from some money that was donated with strings attached. That's what's wrong with the current system. Political campaigns cost a lot of money and those contributions in our system have to come from private parties. Election campaign reform is one of the OWS goals. 11/4/2011 11:22:14 AM |

Yes. Every one. I think that the protestors cleaning up the graffiti from the "protestors" the night before should be arrested too. They should know better than to protest somewhere where there's a chance that someone else, affiliated or unaffiliated, might vandalize something. Actual intention matters not.

^The reason there were only 15 or so is because people rotate out in shifts. It isn't easy when you can't camp or really maintain supplies to stay there all the time. Additionally (believe it or not) most have jobs and/or other obligations at times. The peak times are usually in the evenings when GA meetings take place. The occupation has gone on 24/7 since 10/15 and today is day 23. Yesterday we had a group take part in National Bank Transfer day so only a few held the sidewalk while that went on.
On another note the support from people driving by has been overwhelmingly positive from honking to dropping off food and water to cash donations on the spot. There the few cliche middle fingers and "get a job hippy" comments but they seem few and far between and only serve keep things interesting . The fact is during the city council meeting we had plenty on hand to fill that room. We had 1,000 for the opening rally on 10/15 but only a small percentage of people will actually stay dedicated and occupy. This isn't New York or Oakland. This is Raleigh (a much smaller town and not really in a progressive area of the country overall) so getting those sorts of numbers is a pretty tall order. 11/6/2011 9:31:01 AM |

Are these even crimes? What e-mail chain sent you this? Aside from the obvious attempt to smear the Occupy protesters as a bunch of anti-semites and che guevarra lovers, I really don't see what this list is trying to prove. Anyone who vandalizes and assaults people should be arrested. The rest of the "crimes" listed just grate your conservative sensibilities, and are not illegal. The salty language makes things sound much worse than it really is, and there looks like there are a lot of unsubstantiated rumors in the list as well. Seriously, where did you get this list?

Yeah...I emboldened the instances where serious crimes were alleged, italicized when Anti-Semitism was displayed (which, in some of the "cooler" European countries, is illegal), and underlined instances when the OWS crowds actually hurt business (mostly small business that would probably fall into the "99%".
I thought you would have figured that one out by now.

that does nothing to help your argument.
many of the bold claims insinuate crimes, and don't specify what crimes are being committed
italicized acts aren't fucking crimes. and we're not in some "cool" european country, so that means nothing.
underlined crimes aren't even that many crimes. aside from a few acts of vandalism, there aren't that many crimes in your list.
The rest is a bunch of propaganda and bullshit. your list sucks, just admit it.
and say, what would you classify this as? bold, italicized, or underlined?:

You need to rethink what you're offering as the bold events.
What likelihood was there for any given offense that it was committed by an occupier?
Many of the offenses where it IS overtly claimed that it was done by and occupier (which are few to begin with) are extremely dubious, as is whatever source gave you this list that was fast track on the way to discrediting itself with the exaggerations that are obvious. 11/6/2011 9:50:31 PM |

Orwellian is probably too strong a term. I think it's more that the protestors started off thinking that they could create some kind of egalitarian utopia only to come to the same realization like every revolutionary group before them: there are reasons why we've organized structured governments, why nations don't govern by consensus, why we have skilled bureaucrats to handle things like resource allocation, why we can't barter for everything and why law enforcement is a necessary evil even amongst the most well meaning communities. Now the dreamers are at a junction where they're growing up and are developing more formal governing systems, and this moment is yet another test for the movement. 11/8/2011 4:32:59 PM |

We haven't organized anything. We are sentenced to abide by laws (and service debt) before we are even born. Social Contract theory is bullshit; every generation shifts responsibility onto the next. Why can't we be the generation that says "fuck off", refuses to pay the price for the mistakes of those that came before us, and then also refuses to saddle our children with problems we were too cowardly to address in a serious way?
Quote : | "why nations don't govern by consensus" |
Consensus never exists on a national scale. The power brokers (a small, elite group that does not represent us) make decisions, and it is handed down as "consensus".
Quote : | " why we have skilled bureaucrats to handle things like resource allocation" |
I desperately hope that you were kidding with this statement. "Skilled" and "bureaucrats" should not be in the same sentence. Bureaucrats do not know how to best allocate resources. People ("the market") know what they want to buy. The government exists to force people to buy things that they would not otherwise buy.
OWSers are not foolish for believing there is another way, they're only (sometimes) foolish for believing that the corporation-operated government is capable of being reformed. Reform in the traditional sense is no longer possible. Draconian cuts and major geopolitical changes are coming.
How well we adapt will depend on how well we can educate ourselves in the time we have. Will we concede to being slaves of the state, or will we attempt to rebuild a society based on peaceful, voluntary interaction? Can we finally reject the viability of central planning, having studied history and reflected on the lessons of the past century?

^Can't believe I find myself agreeing with much of what you said. I disagree with your "abolish central planning" attitude, though, but I'm sure that comes as no surprise. Likewise, I don't see how you can have a "abolish social-contract" attitude, either. But whatever, that's just general progressive vs libertarian arguments that have been had a million times on this board.
Still though, I'll put my money on Israel vs Iran becoming an issue just long enough to distract our national attention from our own domestic issues.
anyway, this is relevant:

Shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's been paying attention, but at least it's information that is finally coming to the surface. There's no line between corporate interests and government anymore. It's a boundary that has been eroding for at least 30 years now, in my opinion, and I think it is completely gone at this point.
It's pretty fucking sad when the US government has the same level of effectiveness as the NCAA infractions committee.

I would argue that most of the previous generations have tried to leave things better, and only the latest tripped up a bit. Even with the last generation, I would say they meant well but as noted, lacked the moral courage to do so.
As for not paying the price for the mistakes of our forefathers, we certainly have the option not to, but no one seems to have an idea of how to do it without burning the entire system to the ground. We can dismantle the banks, reorganize retiree entitlements, etc., but that still leaves us with millions unprepared for retirement, sick people who still need to be paid for and masses of lost capital. Or if burning the entire system to the ground is the answer, what do you replace it with? Despite how bad things are now, few are desperate enough yet to reroll the dice; yes, things can become better, but they can also become a lot, lot worse.
Quote : | "Consensus never exists on a national scale." |
The point being that OWS thought it could create a leaderless group built on consensus and quickly learned it doesn't work when you actually have to start administering something (like running a camp or handling finances). Never said nations were run by consensus.

Calm down: hell, you've seen me long enough on this board to know I'm the last advocate of centralized planning. Wrong choice of words; not talking about market forces or macro economic issues but administering resource within a group context, whether government or business. There is a real problem with OWS in that many have no idea how to handle money and resources beyond a personal scale. Reading various articles, it's clear that they don't really know how to manage all the money being donated to the movement and have no clear idea on how to prioritize, plan, budget or even distribute money.
I like OWS and many of the things they proposal, but there's also clearly a lot of naivety in how they started. I feel like I'm watching a group growing up, suddenly realizing that organizing and maintaining a large movement actually requires real administrative planning and skill. They tried to create some sort of utopian general assembly that governs the movement by consensus and are now realizing that it doesn't work when it comes to daily administration.
Agreed that we don't want to be slaves to the state, but that's different from saying we don't need any sort of organization or collective planning to deal with broader issues.11/8/2011 6:44:48 PM |

Umm... The government IS the people. The government isn't a separate entity from "the people." In a democracy, the government is supposed to be an extension of its citizenry.
It's corporations that are distinct from the people, that opposes the people.
If the gov. deviates from being a will of the people, it's a failure of the people to not yield their power, not a failure of government.11/8/2011 9:19:13 PM |

That's pretty simple. I didn't sign shit. Don't tell me that I agreed to abide by all legislation and government decrees since 1776 just by virtue of the fact that I was born here.
Quote : | "I would argue that most of the previous generations have tried to leave things better, and only the latest tripped up a bit. Even with the last generation, I would say they meant well but as noted, lacked the moral courage to do so." |
Tried...but didn't. Things have progressively gotten better, but improvements should be attributed to the market (again - people) that created value and exchanged it for other things of value. Sometimes, there were good intentions. In a lot of other cases, I believe the government has been influenced or directly operated by people that are, at their core, sociopaths.

That's a good discussion to have, and you probably know what side I fall on. The longer we try to sustain the unsustainable, the further we get behind in the long run. I'd rather bite the bullet than have a couple of Japanese-esque lost decades.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think that there was a set direction starting out, and like all "movements", eventually it is co-opted by dubious or incompetent individuals.
Quote : | "Agreed that we don't want to be slaves to the state, but that's different from saying we don't need any sort of organization or collective planning to deal with broader issues." |
It is different, and I would never suggest that we should eliminate organization or planning. I just reject the necessity of there being a single, "central" authority that plans the whole economy.
Quote : | "Umm... The government IS the people. The government isn't a separate entity from "the people." In a democracy, the government is supposed to be an extension of its citizenry." |
No...the government is made up of people. It's not the people. We're the people. You have no control over the government. You can vote, but it doesn't actually matter. Yes, in a democracy, the government is the people. This is not a democracy. This is not even a republic. It's an oligarchy, a thugocracy, a kleptocracy...whatever you want to call it. We are not represented in any meaningful way, though.
Quote : | "If the gov. deviates from being a will of the people, it's a failure of the people to not yield their power, not a failure of government." |
Hmm. It is a failure of the people for electing shitty representatives, yes. And, when those shitty representatives take power, they are also failing. I think it could succinctly be put this way: our political system is full of fail.

^ Lysander Spooner was a nut. The Social contract is an abstraction, not a binding legal agreement you can sign. The true fact of the matter is that we live in meat space and as such laws must be enforced over entire geographic areas and not on a person by person basis.
If political legitimacy hinged on everyone signing social contracts, then it really wouldn't be a goal worth reaching. Think about it. would criminals sign the social contract? If not, what would that mean for their status under the law? Could they still be legitimatly punished for violating laws they never promised to follow? And what about public goods problems? Even if I were not a criminal I may wish to opt of our political arrangement to avoid paying taxes if I could still reap the benefits they provide (national defense for ex)
Saying you never signed a social contract is the worst argument in the world and has been for over 100 years 11/8/2011 10:37:07 PM |
