Quote :
"Forty-seven percent of the country, he said, are people "who are dependent upon government, who believe they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to take care of them, who believe they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it."

This comment suggests a few things. First, it suggests that he really doesn't know much about the country he inhabits. Who are these freeloaders? Is it the Iraq war veteran who goes to the V.A.? Is it the student getting a loan to go to college? Is it the retiree on Social Security or Medicare?

It suggests that Romney doesn't know much about the culture of America. Yes, the entitlement state has expanded, but America remains one of the hardest-working nations on earth. Americans work longer hours than just about anyone else. Americans believe in work more than almost any other people. Ninety-two percent say that hard work is the key to success, according to a 2009 Pew Research Survey.

It says that Romney doesn't know much about the political culture. Americans haven't become childlike worshipers of big government. On the contrary, trust in government has declined. The number of people who think government spending promotes social mobility has fallen.

The people who receive the disproportionate share of government spending are not big-government lovers. They are Republicans. They are senior citizens. They are white men with high school degrees. As Bill Galston of the Brookings Institution has noted, the people who have benefited from the entitlements explosion are middle-class workers, more so than the dependent poor.

Romney's comments also reveal that he has lost any sense of the social compact. In 1987, during Ronald Reagan's second term, 62 percent of Republicans believed that the government has a responsibility to help those who can't help themselves. Now, according to the Pew Research Center, only 40 percent of Republicans believe that.

The Republican Party, and apparently Mitt Romney, too, has shifted over toward a much more hyperindividualistic and atomistic social view - from the Reaganesque language of common citizenship to the libertarian language of makers and takers. There's no way the country will trust the Republican Party to reform the welfare state if that party doesn't have a basic commitment to provide a safety net for those who suffer for no fault of their own.

The final thing the comment suggests is that Romney knows nothing about ambition and motivation. The formula he sketches is this: People who are forced to make it on their own have drive. People who receive benefits have dependency.

But, of course, no middle-class parent acts as if this is true. Middle-class parents don't deprive their children of benefits so they can learn to struggle on their own. They shower benefits on their children to give them more opportunities - so they can play travel sports, go on foreign trips and develop more skills.

People are motivated when they feel competent. They are motivated when they have more opportunities. Ambition is fired by possibility, not by deprivation, as a tour through the world's poorest regions makes clear.

Sure, there are some government programs that cultivate patterns of dependency in some people. I'd put federal disability payments and unemployment insurance in this category. But, as a description of America today, Romney's comment is a country-club fantasy. It's what self-satisfied millionaires say to each other. It reinforces every negative view people have about Romney."

Mitt Romney paid income tax on $350,000 of a $25 million income in the one year for which he released a return, and yet he is righteously angry that people who make $20,000/year aren't paying their fair share.

He's just a fucking asshole, period, end of story.

^^ yeah, Obama handled that pretty gracefully.

Very unlike Romney regarding this issue.

(but then again, Obama didn't say he didn't care about anyone, so his task was much easier)

that's the one thing I will say. Obama handled that fairly well, not that he didn't have help from the media who just kinda let it go. But, as I understand it, Mitt Romney called a press conference to then get up and stammer and stutter. Not gonna help you either way

So rather than letting Romney taking responsibility for his statements, you're blaming the media...

how ironic.

Romney shouldn't even be thinking what he said, let alone say it. This isn't the media at all. This is 100% Mitt Romney. He should take responsibility for his statements, stop being the victim.

I actually remember that happening, Romney dredging up that anti-interracial marriage law and using it to stop same sex marriages too. I thought it was potentially political suicide to start enforcing an anti-interracial marriage law, even if in effect it couldn't ban inter-racial marriages any more. I guess I was wrong.

I hear that Romney doesn't hate poor people, middle class people, and black people.... he just wants to put them in shackles and make them his slaves so he can make mo' money! [ /sarcasm ]

Seriously, I think this shit should stay in the soap box. I'd rather vote for Gary Johnson. I'm not voting for Obama or Romney and you fuckers can keep telling me I am "wasting my vote" by not voting for either a Democrat or a Republican candidate.

"On Monday, Mitt Romney offered a remedy to the problem that caused his wife’s airplane to land prematurely last week: Allow passengers to roll down the airplane windows.

Ann Romney’s plane was grounded Friday after the main cabin filled with smoke. The small electrical fire caused no injuries, but apparently did cause the Presidential candidate to forget the dangers of altitude.

“When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly,” he told the LA Times. “And you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem.”

Air crafts do not open windows because the cabins are pressurized to fly safely at an altitude of tens of thousand feet. Opening a window in an airplane would seriously sicken the passengers and crew. "

I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Depends how high up they were when it happened.

Standard procedure in most minor incidents like this is to drop altitude so if there is a hull breech it isn't a big deal.

Outside air in a plane isn't like when you go outside on Mars in Total Recall.

regardless, that was a really, really stupid comment.

(also, the plane is traveling a few hundred miles an hour, so it'd be pretty windy)

Planes have vents to let in outside air in just this kind of emergency (again, assuming they got to a low enough altitude).

I agree it was a stupid comment, and Romney is obviously full of them, but in his defense you expect him to know everything about the functioning of an airplane?

Although its ridiculously obvious you can't roll down a window, maybe he was unaware of any venting system? Maybe he doesn't know how pressurization works?

I'm sure there are plenty of things you don't know in life that he does.

maybe, but knowing that it's a bad idea to allow plane passengers to roll-down their windows is just common sense. and he seems to lack it. (and i'm not running for president)

That is why he isnt the fucking pilot and the Pres don't fly Air Force One.
besides, the windows in the passenger area do not open.
Additionally, opening the pilot or copilot window and cracking open aft hatch are smoke a fumes venting procedures because the normal ventilation system cannot clear out the cabin fast enough.

Perhaps its still a stupid comment because there are giant doors that can be opened when on the ground to allow ventilation, and even better, escape from the burning plane.
