It's difficult to determine whether this individual's account exactly matches what's discernible from the video, because the person holding the camera repeatedly turns the camera away from and back toward the students.

This individual's statement that "our small group of remaining demonstrators moved forward, away from them" seems somewhat contradictory in and of itself, regardless of what the video documents.

However, it appears that, aside from walking between the student and the Israelites, the indigenous protesters don't further approach the students. In fact, it's somewhat surprising, as the camera is turned away and back toward the students, how close the students and the indigenous protesters became and how quickly the indigenous protesters became encircled.

From this point in the video, it's difficult to ascertain what may have occurred in close proximity of the indigenous protesters, as the camera and the protesters had become separated by a significant number of other individuals.

I don't think Phillips took the best approach but you can see the smugness in the kid's smile and that smile says it all. if you've ever been a minority dealing with affluent white males, you've seen that look several times enough to know all that it embodies.

I'd also like to point out that just because one group, the Black Israelites, was mean to these kids does not mean they are justified in any words or actions directed to a third party. I can't understand why that is even up for debate. Realistically, it wouldn't justify racially suggestive language back toward the offending party, but at least then the argument of being provoked would carry some weight.

One of the best things I've read about this situation wasn't from an article, but rather from a comment in an article. It summed it up well for me.
