yeah, it went live about a month ago (something like that) for the thunderbolt... and those directions you linked to are the ones that i've tried multiple times since GB went live... my problem is that when i "check new" under the software update, nothing shows up

lol. ICS isn't rolling out anywhere atm

As for the Thunderbolt, you may need to manually flash the RUU which will wipe the phone.

if i follow that, what's the best way to completely back up the phone prior to the update? i haven't read much into it, but definitely don't want to redo all apps, settings, etc

My money is on Galaxy Nexus Q2 2012

Verizon is going to drag their feet on releasing it until their payment system is ready, don't want Google Wallet to get a jump on them

That's a pretty dumb bet, considering the device is IN STORES already. It's just not released.

SLEEP MODE ON MOBILE OS = TURNING SCREEN OFF, just press the power button once.

If you actually want to shutdown, press and hold the power button. Startup times aren't that bad.

Heh... All these $0.10 charges from "Google *APPNAME" have triggered my bank's fraud protection and blocked my card until I called them back. I explained it to them what was going on; they said from their end it appears like a whole bunch of probing charges.

Seriously Google, how about group the charges together a day at a time so I don't have dozens of these 10 cent charges? Thanks.

GG to my bank for paying attention.

I'm about to upgrade to my first smartphone. I don't think I would use a 4G phone to its full potential, so what are the better/best 3G phones available for a Verizon plan?

Keep in mind that you don't HAVE to use 4g, and you don't pay extra for 4g. I only use 4g on my phone when i'm watching netflix or something like that. Otherwise, I have the 4g radio off to help with battery life. But generally speaking, all of the other features are going to be better on a 4g phone compared to a 3g phone simply because they're likely to be newer phones.

The iphone 4 (and 4s) is 3G, and the 4 is very reasonably priced.... but that's not android if you're sure you want an android based phone.

^^if you're using vzw, then get a 4G phone to get the 4GB/month for $30 deal. it will probably come in handy once you're really into using your phone more

the only big advantage of going with a 3G-only phone over a 4G is that they'll likely be cheaper with upfront cost

agreed that the nicer phones will be 4G, but of course you pay for "nicer"...if your budget is $200-300, go with a 4G...if it's more like $100-150, get a nicer 3G

i did forget about the verizon pay-for-2GB-get-4GB deal going on right now, but as noted, that's only with 4G

i rarely use more than 2GB myself, mostly because we have wifi at work and i have it at home, so it connects to that whenever i'm either of those two places

yeh, if you can be on wifi a lot, then your data usage won't be so high. my work wifi has restrictions just like our ethernet, so I don't use much wifi there.

Any recommendations for an Android-based "mp3 player" that I could set up with Google Voice, Skype, etc. to make it a wifi-only cell phone? I don't use my phone enough to justify paying for a voice+data plan and can put a cheap pre-pay phone in the glove box for emergencies, but I wouldn't mind upgrading to a new mp3 player anyway and might as well turn it into a phone. This would be my first smartphone, and I'm not too worried about budget since I would be cancelling my current cell plan.

So far, I'm looking at the Samsung Galaxy 5.0 (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-5-0-Android-Player/dp/B005P1VNDW/) but I'm down for recommendations. Looking for good sound quality, battery life and the ability to play decent games; I'm not too concerned with browsing speed, though it would be a plus.

i might have misunderstood you...i was thinking you wanted a phone that you could use without ANY cellular service, just something you could use with google voice over wifi

in which case, use google voice with something like the obihai OBI110 ($50), buy a "regular" phone handset ($50), and then a decent mp3 player ($100)...more functionality for your money, IMO

I think you understood right; that is what I want to do. But I would like a solution that's portable (contingent on other locations having a wi-fi connection), instead of it being strictly home-based with an adapter like what you linked. I didn't know products like that existed, though, so it would be a good option if I ever felt like having a "landline" in the future.

does anyone know how to force the amazon appstore to save to phone memory instead of the SD card? I have 4 gigs free on my phone, but it keeps wanting to put everything on my 2 gig SD, which is full. there's no option under settings. getting frustrated as every google search I do returns jsut pages and pages of app store reviews and the like and no real help

http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/galaxy-nexus-forum/10298-ask-me-galaxy-lte-related-questions-ill-try-answer-them-non-release-related-9.html#post110345

Quote :
"Jean-Baptiste Queru (JBQ), Software Engineer at Google, made some comments that sounded puzzling as to how/when releases are done for the LTE version of the Nexus, which you can find here:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/android-building/Ld5FoFinN7k

In response to a question I posed to him, JBQ stated: "Google is directly involved [in releases to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus], but we don't build those on our servers and we don't have all the AOSP files"

My question had been prompted in part when JBQ stated in the above thread: "I only have some visibility over the builds that are prepared by Google, i.e. yakju [GSM/HSPA+]. Everything else comes from Samsung and I don't know what their schedules and release plans are."

Hmmm, I don't claim to understand this issue, but from what I gather, though the Nexus LTE updates apparently will be released by Google, they come to Google from Samsung and will hinge upon Samsung's "schedules and release plans." And then could VZW meddle with what Samsung sends to Google? "
