oh and they throw words around like 'troll' and 'fanboy' lol"

You say "troll", I say "criticize". I'm a consumer and I use whichever device appeals to me. In the iPhone's case, I prefer the software/UX offered, but I see other platforms making progress and keep an open mind about them. I don't try and justify Apple's moves with the excuse of "its because nobody gives a shit" when there are clearly people who want to see certain features. The fact that you cant accept criticism and feel the compulsive need to defend the new iPhone's shortcomings proves that you are the one with the issues.

"Before there was iPhone there was expandable memory. Had you asked me then what I thought of an SD card slot I would have said "I'm in favor of getting rid of it for a larger internal storage'"

If I were to buy a 16GB iPhone and take it, say, camping for the weekend (read: no computer or wireless reception), and I were to fill up my iPhone with media, would you agree that having expandable storage would be worthwhile? Cloud data requires an internet connection and doesn't match the convenience/transferrability offered by expandable media.

Also, another example. I have a Canon T1i and when I shoot at 720p the memory fills up FAST. Expandable memory is the perfect solution to absolve this problem.

my problem as well. I'm really diggin' the new Androids, and I think if anyone can compete with/surpass Apple, it's Google.

But with every passing day, and every $1 app, I am tightening that noose.

For music, just jailbreak and get Grooveshark. At least until the greedy record execs here get their act together and finish making deals with Spotify.

I think Froyo (or it might be a later update) has the SimplifyMedia streaming ability built-in. I was pretty bummed when they pulled that from the App Store. Another thing which made me want to switch. AT&T has been pretty good for me, so I don't mind streaming. It's better than waiting around for 2.5 hr like I did the other night while iTunes tries to back up my phone (which only had 3.5 GB out of 16 filled).

Yeah, but they don't always give you enough to figure it out. And that's fine, that's their choice. But I think many of them (devs) would be happy with a system that lets them choose how long to allow a trial so they don't have to worry about in-App upgrades etc. Or maybe not. Some of them probably prefer nickel-and-diming people. E.g. F.A.S.T. (Fleet Air Superiority ?) which gives you a single training mission which ends whether or not you shoot down the enemy plane (there's only 1 lol).

The one thing I'll really miss if I indeed end up switching is Appshopper. Probably the wrong place to ask, but does anyone know if there's a site like that for the Android Marketplace?

I, too, have a lot of money invested in apps/music/media through iTunes. But I'd still bite the bullet for the phone if I found something I liked better. I'd miss out on a lot of my media but I have an iPad, AppleTV, and a computer I can use for it. So I guess apps is the major factor.

Like you said, the iPhone isn't terrible hardware, but neither are some of the devices that have the features you all want. so it really boils down to you already being heavily invested in the iOS platform.

i'd like an FM radio (for the TVs at the gym), i'd like removable media (to quickly move multimedia without needing to have a sync cable or networking, i.e. in a hotel room), but that's not going to make me switch platforms. just stupid to own a great phone and have to use a $5 radio from big lots.

no one makes a perfect phone. i've been waiting for an iPhone that had a better camera, a flash, front-facing camera, native backgrounding, and it looks like it's here. good enough to separate me from my money.
"

In regards to your removable media, I'd prefer having wifi sync. My personal feelings on physical media is taking a step backwards when having to juggle SD cards. This is another reason why I love dropbox because I can keep a cached local copy of my data on all my machines without having to worry about physical media, or keeping track of what data is where.

We've covered this issue. Most of the people posting in tech talk do not make up the majority. These are features you'd like and have uses for but most people don't want/need an SD card slot. They'd rather a simpler solution where all their data is in one place. TV out? How many of the average consumers would actually use that on their phone or even know their phone has this capability? I don't defend Apple for their phones shortcomings, I just happen to not want SD/Tv Out/removable battery. What I do want is wifi sync which Apple does not do.

If I were camping I would not be concerned with the media on my phone. I'd be there to camp and enjoy the outdoors, friends. I can do without my entire movie library and I can guarantee you I have more than enough internal storage for music we'd want to listen to on the camping trip.

I'm assuming the Canon T1i is a video camera? Is it not obvious why the camera would need expandable/removable storage?

Fucking Christ, do you never get tired of telling everyone exactly how they should use their phones, exactly what features they should want, and exactly why they don't actually want things they seem to really want?

Let it go man. Just because someone else is looking for different things doesn't mean it's your fucking duty to "make them see the light".

You are the very definition of a fanboy, and it got old years ago. Just. Fucking. STOP.

Please.

^^The T1i is the last-gen intro-level digital SLR, although it was the first camera with 720p video recording, I believe. The new T2i has 1080i.

I will bold key words for you next time so you guys can unbunch your panties.

personal

The real problem here is you because you get your panties in a bunch over every little thing I say. You have your opinions and I have mine. You flood these forums with your nerd rage and opinions and I do the same. Why you can't have an adult discussion is beyond me. I'm not here to change anybody's mind. I'm here to participate in discussion as to why I like certain features and not others and why you like certain features.

(ok maybe not you, but everyone else at least)

Read somewhere else that existing customers could keep their current plan and you didn't need to switch unless you wanted tethering.

From what I remember reading, it sounded like if you already had the unlimited plan they wouldn't take it away from you [yet], but i haven't seen anything definite on that.

I let my sister use my renewal last month cause she needed a new phone badly and the renewal for her line wasn't until next year. The next renewal for a line in our family plan is in August. Hopefully they'll let me use it since I haven't actually renewed since I bought my 3G over two years ago.

this was the more relevant quote from your article

Quote :
"What about iPhone customers who want to upgrade equipment? Surprisingly enough, there's good news there. You can keep your existing unlimited iPhone plan and migrate it to new equipment to upgrade or replace your handset, and even can renew your contract with that plan. However, when Apple introduces its new iPhone, it may offer new desirable plans at the same time. Bloom declined to comment on upcoming product announcements or special plans. "

I think i'm most impressed by the new screen... they are using "resolution independent" technology AND it's an IPS panel.

One thing that always bugged me about phones of the current gen is that if you used them sideways, they looked worse than portrait typically.

I'm ready to switch to android just so I can stop clicking on this thread & sifting through the golovko shit parade. & DAMN do I need a replaceable battery.

If I can find someone to give my 3GS to in exchange for committing to a new AT&T contract so I can pay for their 4G & have no contract I'll upgrade. I really don't mind being on AT&T but within the next year I think android will be at a point where it really is better on all fronts & I don't want to be locked in without an upgrade path.

When does the new OS update for the old phones get released?

Also, video calls being only wifi to wifi & iphone to iphone... could that be more useless? In most of those situations I can be at a computer just as easily.

i haven't fully read through all of the new features, but i like the idea of the video calls. i can see that being more useful to some people than others, but i like having the option if i want it later.

what i really like is the mobile movie creation and editing capability (if i read that correctly, at least). that seems fun as hell.

so lets say your contract is up and it's 3 months until the new iphone comes out...you're hosed if you want to keep you unlimited (assuming you don't want to play extra-line shenanigans)?

you'd have to choose between your unlimited data and the new iPhone/whatever phone u really want?

And the only-over-wifi was probably because ATT is already taking a hammering from normal data, imagine all those iPhone user now streaming video all the time...

Yeah, things I've read on the new screen from people who were there say that, like most Apple products, it sounds neat until you see it in person, then it's just awesome.

Incidentally it also brings up an excellent point in favor of Apple's side in the whole Apple development tool chain vs third party development kits (read flash app development). Every single app in the app store, whether or not the developer even touches it gets all of it's base UI elements and text redone in the new resolutions, simply because they use the Apple libraries. By comparison, were an app to be developed with flash, especially if it was anything like Adobe's continued efforts in duplicating UI elements (see CS suite), it is very likely if not assured that all of those apps UI's would need to be redesigned to take advantage of the new display tech.

Yes, per Apple it is currently iPhone to iPhone only. However, they are apparently going to be publishing the protocol / spec that they use to make it all work, presumably with the idea of getting 3pp developers to make it work on other phones as well as I would guess computers. I can imagine skype taking this and integrating it, free computer to iPhone video calls.

Also, it's interesting to note that even though video phone calls are nothing new, this may very well be the first time that video phone calls actually take off. One of the toughest things facing video phone has been finding other people who have video phones to call. It's the old tech chicken and egg problem. No one wants a video phone if they can't call other people, so no one buys one, and no one has one, so no one buys one etc etc.

In this case though, lots of people want an iPhone, and lots of them want the new one. Sure the older iphones are left out, but plenty of people will be buying this, and the next generation iPhone. The eggs are in place.

Demos will be available on June 24th (launch day). You can pre-order starting June 15th though which if you already decided to get one, I highly recommend pre-ordering and having it shipped to your home. It beats waiting in line all day for the chance of not getting one.

It was revealed in the past month or two that AT&T has an exclusivity agreement until 2012. However, rumors have been going around that there could be an iPhone on Verizon in September (or at least an announcement in September) if the rumors prove to be true. This fall is also when the iPad is supposed to get iOS4 so we might see a multi-carrier announcement then too.

As I understand it, both AT&T and Verizon will use the same LTE 4G networks. AT&T expects to have their 4G network up in the 2011/2012 timeframe. I think Verizon may be ahead of that. I wouldn't count on a multi-carrier iPhone until then, but I guess anything is possible.
