Not digital, but today is WPPD (Woldwide Pinhole Photography Day). I think this stuff is cool. http://www.pinholeday.org/ http://blog.flickr.net/en/2010/04/19/pinhole-pinhole-pinhole-2/
I'm going to try and make my camera here in a bit... anyone else think this is cool? Anyone else going to participate? http://www.flickr.com/photos/dippold/4449546879/ 4/25/2010 11:00:27 AM |

what affect does this have on your pictures? I thought it was going to make it look like youre looking through a peephole in a door, but to me it kinda just makes the pics look blurry. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong stuff, I only saw 2 or 3 examples... 4/25/2010 11:07:40 AM |

^^^ I think it's more about making your own camera than anything else. From my understanding the size of the pinhole has a lot to do with how sharp/blurry your pictures are. I'm sure distance from the pinhole to the film has something to do with it also. To be honest, I don't know too much about it. I just thought it was something cool to do on a Sunday
I don't mind a blurry photo either. It can be a cool effect sometimes.
Also, check out a pinhole group on flickr and see what people are posting... http://www.flickr.com/groups/pinholephotography/pool/ 4/25/2010 11:12:38 AM |

think composition look around at the background and think to yourself how that object will affect the picture make use of a simple table light for fill lighting
that being said... I,too, am not opposed to you posting some more pics of this chick but give me something more with some better planning and not just snapping some trampy pictures of a half naked girl. 4/25/2010 3:44:37 PM |

not bad, i guess, but i DESPERATELY need a macro lens
the only editing on this one is reducing the saturation on the ring itself (it looked too purple because of the light filtering through the diamond, i think)

i posted a little bit ago about buying a new lens or two and just pulled the trigger on a 50mm f1.4 - borrowed a friend's 1.8 for a week and i liked it but was able to justify the bump in price
going to rent a few lenses for a safari i'm going on at the end of june and here's what i'm thinking
walking around 17-55mm f2.8 IS - http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/canon-ef-s-17-55mm-f2.8-is/for-canon - i'm hesitant to give up IS for a L lens in this range but maybe that's the route I should go instead - just wish it zoomed a bit more but oh well
zoom - 2 options 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS - http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/canon-100-400mm-f4.5-5.6-l-is/for-canon
70-200mm f2.8L IS - http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/canon-70-200mm-f2.8-l-is-ii/for-canon - worried this won't zoom nearly enough for me 4/27/2010 11:13:51 AM |

Well since you're going to be outside I guess the longer zoom will be more important than the ability to stop down to 2.8?
where are you renting from?

I think I'd prefer a 70-200 with a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter than the 100-400. It'll still be faster even with the stops that the teleconverter costs you. I'm sure either lens will rock for your needs, though. What camera will it be on?
Also, I would DEFINITELY consider a 300mm prime. You won't find a sharper or faster focusing lens, no doubt about it. The prime isn't as versatile, but assuming you've also got a mid range lens with you I'd choose this above all else. Not to mention shooting with a prime will make you think about your composition more and will force you to shoot tight when inexperience/laziness/caution would tell you to do otherwise, both of which will make you a better shooter.
Rent a cheap wide (I notice the Tokina 11-16 is cheap to rent), keep your 50 prime, rent the 70-200 and the 300 prime. The 300 2.8 is a good bit more expensive to rent than the 300 f4, but even the f4 will be sharper and faster.
A Safari is no time to skimp on cost, and if you plan on shooting anywhere but bright daylight, the 4-5.6 may be bothersome.

pimpinhonda, where was the last mountain picture taken? looks like the road on the way to gatlinburg from cherokee
though i'm sure lots of places look the same in the appalachian mountains 4/27/2010 5:43:06 PM |
OmarBadu zidik 25071 Posts user info edit post |
it'll be on my t1i so it's a 1.6x crop
i do like the 70-200 2.8 since it's faster - i've never shot with a teleconverter and was worried the quality would suffer
we go out on 2 major drives each day one early morning and one at dusk/night - there is a walk during the day - a prime is probably not going to happen since i'm not able to leave the vehicle at times and when i can i cannot go far - also switching lenses while on the safari is highly recommended against but if it has to be done i'll make it work
do you really think it'll be worth getting a wider lens if i get the 17-55? i noticed you like to shoot wide a lot and have posted quite a few 11mm shots on here - i'm not going to skimp and price for rental is not of a huge concern - the biggest concern with a lot of lenses is travel weight - the flight from johannesburg to kruger park is on a tiny plane and i'm very limited for luggage
the safari isn't the only time i'll be shooting - i'm going to 3 world cup soccer games while there and if possible would like to do some limited shooting while at the games and definitely while around town
plan to rent from http://www.lensrentals.com right now but that could change ]] 4/27/2010 5:50:32 PM |
Ronny All American 30652 Posts user info edit post |
I honestly think that going with the 100-400 would limit you a lot when you're not on Safari. On a crop body, even the short end at 100mm is still very long glass and you would likely use this lens ONLY on the Safari, leaving you with just the 17-55.
The 70-200 is still small enough and practical enough to keep with you all the time, and the 300 will give you the firepower you need on Safari. 300mm on a crop body is a good bit of distance, and teleconverters are cheap and small enough to stuff anywhere.
In my opinion, I think a combination of the 17-55, 70-200, and 300 (and possibly a teleconverter) will have all of your needs covered. The best lenses are the ones you have with you, and I honestly think that the limitations of the 100-400 would likely cause it to be left behind when a 70-200 probably wouldn't. 4/27/2010 6:03:53 PM |

i live in atlanta so raleigh rentals aren't an option - i am going to check some local options just to see if prices are better but i doubt they will be
i haven't read a whole lot of favorable things about using teleconverters but i've never personally used one to make up my own mind
i agree that for the whole trip the 17-55 & 70-200 makes more sense especially since it'll be a fast 200mm - i need to look up pictures from other safaris and find out what range people are shooting i guess - i'm skeptical about taking a 300 prime just because i think it'll force me to change lenses in a situation where the conditions aren't favorable or don't have time to
i have the kit 18-55 and mediocre 55-250 that i'm not planning on taking with me at this point mainly due to space in my bag (both lenses are light) 4/27/2010 6:25:25 PM |
