thinking about getting this...i've never owned a pistol before and i know i've posted in a couple of TWW gun threads about getting a .22 plinker...is this a good deal? i don't think the wife is keen on having a pistol the house (i already have a shotgun and rifle), but i'm hoping she'll try it out and enjoy it...if i decide not to keep it, i should be able to sell it for $260 or so (cost of gun + FFL fee), right?

looks like south raleigh jewelry & loan (intersection of gorman and avent ferry, next to the DMV) charges $20 FFL fee...is that reasonable? having never bought a gun off the internet, i've never had cause to find an FFL holder...any reason to steer clear of this one in particular?

so i went to the range and explained how the blackhawk was shooting and they took a look at the barrel to see if it was canted and they said "maybe, but we've seen far worse."

they thought possibly it was in my head since i didnt consider it until googling it, so their range guy stood in the lane with me while i shot a couple and gave me some tips.

my first 2 shots were as expected- at 15 yards i was shooting almost 1 foot to the left. i had centered the sights the night before because i refuse to have a gun with the adjustable sights over at full lock.

so they he shot a couple and they were both an inch off the bull.

he watched how i held it and i was cupping the base of the grip, moved my left hand up out of the way abit.

because my fingers were so long i was placing the trigger in the crook of my first joint and he said that was pulling it left too.

so even though its abit awkward im forcing myself to use the pad and press straight back instead of squeezing it like a shotgun like i was.

it took some getting used to for sure. i banged up my knuckles worse than even because i think my previous grip was more for comfort, but shit if it didnt work. my group was better than his on the next target.

so im quite happy now! you learn something new every day!

i still wish i knew the specs on the ammo ruger used to adjust the sights from the factory..

I'm glad you got it figured out. Don't feel too bad about your technique. I can't shoot any moderate recoil single action revolver. Most of them are just a completely different animal than most autos and DAs.

Something I like to do on some of my guns is polish the front of the trigger and radius the edges. It lets your finger slide/rotate during the trigger pull. In some guns for some people I'm convinced extra friction on the trigger face can cause the gun to move before the trigger breaks.

Have you asked ruger what ammo they use?

I took a couple of my friends out for some sporting clays the past weekend. One guy has never shot a long gun before, and always said things like "why would anyone need to own a gun?" (especially when I mention my AKs). After hitting nothing for the first half of the course, he started to pick up on it and finished out decently.

Now he's buying a shotgun, and it warms my heart.

anybody ever shop at Ed's Gun Shop on US-1 as you're coming into Southern Pines? i stopped by the other day and was surprised to find a pretty good reloading selection with good prices for a brick and mortar store. good selection of powder and primers. had most of the popular rifle bullets and bulk berry's handgun bullets. had most of the equipment you'd need to get started and even had some dillon 550s.

he had bricks of 1500 fiocchi rifle primers for $40/brick. i picked up 1 small rifle and 1 large rifle. not sure how they'll do, but he spoke highly of them and that's an excellent price.

he also gave me a contact for a range nearby. A+++ gun shop, will shop again.

^^^ Mechanix gloves. I like the black on black, but the coyote is nice too. Get some on eBay for ~$11 shipped. Make sure you get the right size. If you can't palm a basketball, you shouldn't wear a large.

i'm sure i sound like a broken record, but Eastern NC Firing Range has plenty of 100 yd lanes and pistol lanes and then a 275 yd range around back. they have steel gongs on the rifle range and some reactive steel pistol targets. they have free targets (i usually donate a little if i use theirs). not many restrictions. it's an easy hour drive from raleigh right on hwy 70. you can shoot all day for $20. you can get there early, shoot til lunch, go eat lunch, and come back and shoot the rest of the day if you want, still just $20. $15 if you go with a member. the folks are easy to get along with.

@neuse Ed's Guns down in Vass is definitely the truth. Bought my first glock there last year. They're around 25% cheaper than Raleigh area gun shops in my experience. Friendly staff too. The owner actually manages the customer forums, he's actually quoted me prices below what's advertised in store on certain items, so it's definitely worth it to get a quite before driving down if you're looking for something specific.

I have noticed that they mark up considerably at the Dixie gun and knife show to a level that's comparable to non-show retail prices for this area.

Will definitely continue to shop there in store.

y'all have any preferences for more affordable (ie. not gun-specific) maintenance products and their use? for example, reading up on some basic gun maintenance has given me a lot of results from people saying they swear by motor oil instead of gun oil and car wax as a better anti-rust coating

thoughts? i'm sure that some folks will shrug and say it's fine to use these alternative products and others will swear by the stupid expensive stuff...just thought i'd get y'all's opinions

since its up for discussion, all I do is use CLP or Hoppe's #9 (something like that) to clean it but I don't do any oiling. Is that good enough? The products say that they're lubricants as well

Tried my hand at color filling on the new AR lower. Just started with the engraving, and realized how not easy this is going to be.

I'm using a Testors model paint that matches the FDE color, and paint thinner to wipe off excess.

The first few attempts, I just wiped off and started again.
This is the third attempt, and I'm getting better at it.
From a distance, it looks good, but when you get up close it is bad.

Breakfree CLP, Hoppes Benchrest 9 (It's #9 with copper solvent), and Barnes CR-10 handle 96% of my cleaning needs. Breakfree CLP and Wilson Combat ultrawhatever grease handle 96% of my lube needs.

If you can't afford Breakfree and Hoppes you probably can't afford to shoot your guns so there's no need to clean them anyway. Sure other things work but if they worked real well they'd bottle it up and sell it as a gun product. They'd mark it up but eventually we'd find out it was the same and buy the cheaper product. Motor oil is a great lube but I've found that it doesn't stay in place as well as CLP and the rust prevention sucks.

You need to lube a gun (with oil, CLP, or grease) wherever it needs it. The amount left after cleaning might not be enough depending on the type of gun.
For most moving parts I'll use a qtip to apply CLP so there's a visible film on the surface; a little more than just visible on slides.

Hoppes may say it's a lube, but IMO it sucks for lube. If you use it enough as a lube it'll turn into a gummy residue that attracts lint. I only use it in bores and always wipe it clean with CLP.

No problem. If you find that CLP isn't lubing enough but don't want to use grease then breakfree makes "LP" which is the same stuff minus the cleaner. I find that it does do a little better at lubing, much like good motor oil except it sticks to the metal better than motor oil. Rust tests show that LP actually doesn't preserve as well as CLP. I have a theory that the cleaners in CLP help the product bond to the metal so in [my] theory if you apply LP following a CLP cleaning then the rust prevention should be as good as CLP alone.

There's a lot of debate in the gun maintenance world but over the years I've realized all one needs at the most basic level is a can of breakfree CLP, an old tshirt, q tips, a rod small enough to push t shirt patches down the bore, and a good understanding on how their gun works.

A: No, there is no state registration of firearms.

Q: I just inherited / bought a gun from someone in Texas, do I need to transfer the gun to my name?

A: No, there is no state registration of firearms, thus there is no requirement transfer the firearm in your name.

Q: What is required to purchase a firearm in the state of Texas?

A: You will need a valid state-issued ID. Many FFLs will not sell to out-of-state residents. This is due to the FFL's requirement to uphold your resident state's gun laws, and the inherient complexity associated with many states.

Q: Can I carry a firearm on my person?

A: Yes, with proper licensing (Concealed Handgun License) you may carry a pistol or revolver on your person so long as it remains concealed. Long guns (rifles / shotguns) do not have to be concealed, but must be carried in a manner not calculated to cause alarm, and do not require a license.

NC is the same on most of those points. only major differences are NC requires a handgun purchase permit or a CHP to purchase a handgun and NC allows open carry.
