On Terrell McKenzie
***, PG

Looks like he'll be for the class of 2008, NC State is interested (as already stated)

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news?slug=rivals-77104&prov=rivals&type=story_recruiting (from Rivals)

Quote :
" Terrell McKenzie is waiting answers. Will his former school allow him to take his finals? Will he be a 2007 or 2008 prospect? Where will he be next year? The New York City native is now at Brewster Academy in Wolfboro, N.H. and he waits.

Patience is a virtue that McKenzie is quickly learning. The former Paramus (N.J.) Catholic star did not finish his junior year at the school and never took his finals there, thus receiving an incomplete grade for his junior season.

Brewster head coach Jason Smith said "right now it is looking like he'll be 2008" and anticipates an answer on McKenzie's situation in the next two weeks from Paramus Catholic.

Since he has been at Brewster, McKenzie has not had any issues academically, or on the court. If he can stay in the class of 2007, McKenzie will be one of the top point guards still available in the senior class.

"He's defending really well. He's really tough and I think that is because he's really starting to mature a little bit," Smith said. "He hasn't had to deal with a lot of structure in the past and now he's starting to figure it out."

At the National Prep Showcase, McKenzie was one of the top guards in the entire event. Playing alongside Texas commitment Dogus Balbay has allowed McKenzie to play both guard positions.

"He and Dogus are really good together. Terrell is a better defender and a better shooter while Dogus can play the point or slide over to attack the rim. Both do a good job of getting everyone involved."

College coaches have seen that ability in McKenzie for a while now but with the pending decision on his future, they are forced to wait.

"Everyone is in a holding pattern," Smith said.

Smith said Nebraska has an offer on the table for 2007 or 2008 while NC State has inquired since the NPS. Central Florida has also thrown their hat into the mix. McKenzie has always maintained a high regard for the ACC or the Big East. "

We also interested in Ralph Sampson III
***, PF, class of 2008

Quote :
" The summer was not good for Ralph Sampson, III. It is that simple. He struggled at the NBA Players Association camp. The Nike All-America camp wasn't any better. He didn't have a high school to call home.

Things are changing now for the 6-foot-10, 215-poud big man. Now back at
Northview High School in Duluth, Ga., the school where he attended as a freshman, Sampson is playing with confidence and with a purpose.

On Friday night against Berkmar High School, Sampson scored 18 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked six shots. The son of former Virginia great Ralph Sampson said he realized he needed to play his own game.

"I started living up to my own expectations and playing my own game and stopped worrying about my name or who my dad is," Sampson said. "Someone told me to experience my own dream and if it's God's will, then I will be happy and play well."

Nothview head coach Brian Seitz, who coached Sampson as a freshman, said the big man is making strides.

"He has his moments where he can be really casual or he can be really aggressive. He has a game changing ability because he is a good rebounder and defender. In our last game, he had five dunks and was a force on that end.

"The question with him whether or not he's going to bring it every possession. I think that will just come over time."

Sampson said he has spent extra time in the gym on his own and fine tuning his overall game.

"I've been working really hard. You can never be too good," Sampson said. "My goal is to work as hard I as I can and keep the mindset that there is always room for improvement."

Sampson played a Mt. Pisgah, a small private school in Alpharetta, Ga., last year. The year before he moved to Huntsville, Ala., and played at Butler High School. He has helped his team win state championships at both stops.

"Ralph is so mature and is a great leader for our team. He's won two state titles at different levels and he's really coachable. He wants to get better. Mentally, he's all there. I really think he's a coach's dream, Seitz said. "He's such a winner. People can say what they want about him but he wins and he's unselfish along the way."

College coaches are making the trek to metro Atlanta to see Sampson play. NC State and Oklahoma State have sent assistants out to see Sampson this year while "South Carolina stopped by to say hello," Seitz said.

Admittedly, the three-star prospect said recruiting is on the backburner at the moment.

"I haven't thought about that too much," Sampson said. "People are coming out to watch me play but I'm working on getting better right now.""

Not really seeing Ferguson as a point...he's said it, Lowe has said it, and he doesn't really look like one on the floor.

I hope Degand is the real deal at PG. If he can run a solid point, we could have a very competitive team the next couple of years.

PG/SG Degand, Ferguson
SG/SF Fells, Grant
SF Horner, Thomas
SF/PF Costner, Smith
PF/C McCauley, Hickson

Not a bad rotation, and Grant would be the only Senior. We'll immediately be much a much deeper team. Harris could give some minutes if needed.

Johnny Thomas faces off against Dudley (of Eric Hicks, Brendon Haywood, Kevin Swinton, William Graves and current wolfpack walk-on Chad Williams fame) and Kenny Belton (Cincinatti signee) for the little four championship tonight. This is a re-match of the final last year when Thomas's team won. Anyway, should be a good game and interesting to see what Johnny Thomas does in the spotlight since he got outplayed by William Graves last year.

couple of my buddies went to see smith play, and they said he looked really lazy, and didn't look good at all. but they also said that the team they were playing was a really good prep school from NJ or something, so maybe his competition was just more talented...i dunno but it doesn't sound good no matter how you look at it, we need someone who is going to hustle

^^26 points........10-17 from the free throw line(not real good)
Didn't hit any outside shots, did most of his work in the paint, as he should

I like the 10 deep rotation for next year like this:

PG Degand/Ferguson/Grant
SG Fells/Grant/Ferguson
SF Smith/Horner/Thomas/Grant
PF Hickson/Thomas/McCauley
C McCauley/Hickson

We really will be able sub in and out 2 different 5s if we want to. Depth is nice. Sid will be able to match up and put what 5 he needs in. We could go big, fast, small, quick, whatever we need.

^^^and ^^^^ don't know why the starting lineup is so in question next year

Starters:
C - Hickson/McCauley
PF - Hickson/McCauley
SF - Costner
SG - Grant
PG - Delegand/Ferguson/Johnson(maybe)

there is no way the Grant will not be the starting SG his senior year

the only real question is at the PG position
and whether mccauley or hickson will be playing center

Grant is a true SF so how could you say that?

I was just making out positions and possible lineups.

The starting 5 will probably be:

5) McCauley
4) Costner
3) Grant
2) Fells
1) Ferguson

That way we can bring in the freshmen and let them work their way into games and learn slowly. They don't have to contribute a lot. There is no guarantee these guys will be good right away although Hickson appears to be ready. Ced took a while to come into his own, look what a year being the backup did for him.

^^that lineup is too weak and it's not doing too well for us right now
however it'll probably be our starting lineup for the first month or two

Lowe has shown that he likes the "Big Guys" and fully utilizes them
plus costner is naturally a SF and grant's physique and style of play is built more for a SG

Costner will be an NBA SF if he works at it...and that would be nice for us to have a 6'9" SF too.

It's funny you think Grant is a SHOOTING guard.

If Grant has any NBA potential, it might have to be at guard. He still can't shoot from the outside.

he'll be available before ACC play next year

we'll need him by then too since we'll only have Degand next year at PG (much like Atsur this year) with Ferguson/Grant as backups (which they shouldn't be).

Do we have any white players coming in? I'm concerned that our 3-point shooting will drop off more than it already has.

After Gavin's performance last night (too many turnovers, bad passes, etc...), I never want to see him at the PG position again; especially once Atsur gets back. Let him go in as a SF or SG.

When Lowe let Fells run the point in the 2nd half of the ECU game, we had less turnovers and the offense was somewhat less sloppy.

Why after that would we go right back to Grant playing the PG position? Fells is not a great PG by any means but it seems IMO that he protects the ball better bringing it up the court. Fells ability is only based on one game obviously but Grant is turning the ball over multiple times every game at the position so why not switch that up?

did you even watch the clemson game? Fells has worse turnovers than Gavin by far. I think I counted 7 due to errant pass and ball-handling. Outside of his 2 tres pointers in the 2nd half the dude just plain was horrible.

yeah i was there. i also watched Grant do the same shit and some of it was just embarassing. there's really not a good solution as of now with Atsur out but still, i wouldn't mind some experimentation with someone else at the point. just to see how it goes.
