So i'm in the market for an LP style guitar, except cheap. Should i go ESP or Epiphone? I need to get that fatter stoner metal sound. And i'm kinda tired of dealing with tuning with my floating bridge, even though the tremol-no makes it really easy. I don't really want to spend more than $400 probably just going to go with CL

honestly I am NOT a fan of any of the epiphone versions of the LP or SGs after messing around with a lot of them recently. I used to use an epiphone LP for this band as a backup guitar when we started and I really wasnt a big fan compared to the sound you can get from a real LP. But vinyl can prob give you a better description

haha i understand that.

So im a pedal noob outside of a few big ones. When it comes to chorus pedals, are the basic ones sine wave? Ive been working with a piece with my line 6 modeling that I accidentally enabled a "sine chorus" effect on that literally gave me the exact tone I was going for that I wasnt achieving with just reverb and delay and now I must be able to get it outside of my laptop effects modeling haha.

Say something like the Boss CH1 super chorus, is that sine or what?

i don't know about sine or not, but imo the CH-1 is a fucking terrible sounding chorus

small clone ftw

as for an LP-style guitar, if it's just a backup i'd go with an agile or something similar, a cheapie that comes out of the same factory as an epi but you don't pay for name

with that said, i have a beat to shit epi sg with a duncan jb in the bridge and only volume/killswitch that i'd sell you cheap, but i dunno if it'll make the sound you want...it's my recording guitar for facemelters, which i rarely play any more

word, I had never used the Boss just new that model hah. The small clone, I found an electro harmonix (a brand I do like) model with that name after an initial search,

Is this it?

http://www.zzounds.com/item--ELHSMALLCLONE

It has solid reviews, but how much adjustment on the sound / style can you make?

k, switched back to regular strings..same gauge exactly. these strings feel like f'in toys. is it possible i got the wrong strings (as in, mislabeled) or is there that much difference?

theres a difference, your intonation will more than likely be off.

i decided against the LP, and will probably go with an Explorer, but probably a cheap-ass LTD and just replace the pickups with SD JB's

oh yea, forgot my phone locked up yesterday when i was trying to post here

by toys i meant they feel like ultra light weights or something. i mean, just using the pressure i'm used to having to use to push a string down i'm bending them halfway across the fretboard sometimes if i don't push straight down just right. i know if my technique was better it probably wouldn't happen--just sayin, these are insanely light weight feeling

ah well, no biggie..getting used to them now

^ I know what you mean, in the days when I never really cared much about strings and would often jump across brands and gauges on a whim just to try different things. One time I happened to put a set of light strings on it and my fingers immediately noticed the difference. Chords that used to ring were now dead sounding and things were bending when I didnt want them to and the intonation was just problematic. I realized that I needed to increase my gauge to get back to a more comfortable sound and feel.

i know how you feel haha. we are wanting to write a couple shorter songs for this album instead of some of the really long stuff we started out with. For awhile we were writing some songs that were 7-8 minutes on average but what we have kept for this record so far now has averaged about 5 or 6 and we are wanting to throw a few 4ish minute songs on here...but its weird because 4 minutes feels REALLY short to me.

yeah, at least yours have lyrics. Even with the long drown out verse i have it still seems really short. The one i just got done recording is like 5:30ish and i'm thinking i need to repeat one of those verses again.

I may as well plug my band. We just added two new songs to our myspace and have our first show ever coming up in 2 weeks (at good old Sadlack's). I'm not very good at mixing but I'm slowly getting better. ATM I'm here in the library listening with cheap earbuds and the mix sounds a lot different then what I was hearing at my house last night. Our style is noise/shoegaze/drone. Anyways here is the link:

anyone built their own pedal board? Whats the best material? My initial thought is that its not worth paying a 100-200 bucks for those premade ones but I could be wrong. Obviously Ive pulled a bunch of stuff up online but just figured Id ask around on here.

Plywood is an obvious choice at the moment possibly covered in tolex? And then carried around in some kind of case/thick bag.

I'll have some in the effects loop and some in front once I refresh my pedal stock here. The idea after Christmas money is spent is to have:

Tuner + Noise Supressor in front with Chorus -> Reverb -> Delay in the effects loop. So something with room for 6 pedals should be plenty as I dont see myself ever really using more than 6. I have all the power and cables etc. myself so no need for something like the ones that have stuff built in to the board. I have run across a few things online that were somewhat reasonably priced though:

on sale for $45 with basically the slanted board and the case (the case is pretty clutch in that cost as that board isnt that hard to setup). Is it worth building one or buying something like this on sale or used?

If that case has a hard liner on top then I'd say go for it at $45...I've made one out of plywood in the past, but a sufficient protective top layer that fit correctly was definitely more than $45 worth of frustration.

Unfortunately it doesnt, its just fairly rugged Nylon (600 denier). I thought about doing the same thing you just said though if I went with something like that. That front pouch covers nearly all of the pedalboard on the inside. Since I wouldnt really need to use that pouch I was thinking I could cut some plywood to slip inside that front pouch easy enough and it would prob do the trick without it being loose on the inside.

That'd probably work, especially if you don't have any pedals that are particularly fragile. I had to build a hard shell to go over mine because I was using an all-plastic Danelectro copy of a Foxx Tone Machine, and it had top-mounted knobs that I'm sure would snapped right off the bottom of the PCB if they had gotten hit hard from above.

Right, one of my current delay pedals is a behringer plastic delay modeled after the DD 6 and my tuner pedal is the fender so some sort of hard protection might be important. My other pedals are metal casings like BOSS cases and they feel like tanks. Im certainly not extremely rough with my stuff either.

Actually I spoke without thinking earlier too...My old BOSS PSU stopped putting out power 2 weekends ago, I forgot. Im probably going to grab one of the new BOSS psu's but before I do, has anyone here tried the 1 spot stuff? Pretty reasonable prices for a 9v psu and 8 plug daisy chain combo http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Visual-Sound-1-Spot-Combo-Pack?sku=150373

I'm just totally revamping my setup here. I've been lazy and simply ran a tuner, noise supp, delay in front of my amp forever. But since I got my recording stuff out of the way I'm finally working on the pedal setup

^ That's definitely a good price. I've been using an old Signalflex that has six outputs, but those sleeve-to-battery clip and -1/8" tip adapters are worth a lot to me, too (stupid Vintage Rat with a tip supply).

haha. yea the adapters are nice. Ive heard a few people say it was noisy on them with close to the 8 pedal limit but it also seemed like they had a few big pedals sucking a lot of power (zoom pedal in one of the reviews).

I dont see any problem pedals in my setup; It is all pretty basic stuff so hopefully I wont have any electric humming in my setup. (power conditioners seem like a waste to me)

hard to describe but for some metal parts you're working on synchronized stop and go stuff where you might want dead silence for a beat or two or as rhythm guitar palm muted progressions where you might have a beat or two pause in between chords and it annoys me to have buzz or feedback (hence the NS 2 haha)

That is a homemade board, created in about 30 mins last Friday. One piece of plywood, one carpet rug, a few randomly placed 3/8" staples, and 4 screws. It worked fine for the show for moving things in and out quickly but I have no cover protection (I drape an old jacket over it while moving it). I have to carry it like a waiter carrying a serving plate. Overall free so it saved me a ton of money, and it gets the job done for me. I use a onespot daisy chain connected to a generic radioshack wall wart. No sound problems and I power all but the RAT with it. Damn that RAT with its strange power supply.

just don't put anything in front of a fuzz factory...it does all sorts of crazy shit to the fuzz sensitivity

Ive always ran my delay in front of my preamp...only because ive been too lazy to buy two extra cables

But I have tried it in our practice space and our other guitar player does it and any modulation effect plus reverb and delay just sounds sooooo much smoother in the fx loop, especially with distortion.

I decided i'm getting an esp fx. probably the cheaper version, because the only difference between that one and the $800 one is the tuners, and pickups that i'd replace anyways

vinylbandit might be happy. I got an analog chorus pedal. Not the small clone, but I picked up an Ibanez CS9 stereo analog chorus pedal.

Its in the mail with the pedalboard that I got for $50.

^ that pn-2 is god amongst discontinued boss pedals. slowdive and mbv definitely used those. another one of my favorites is sg-1 slowgear. behringer is putting out a bunch of boss clones that you can get for $30. pretty sweet and close to specs, although they are plastic, have cheap jacks, and no true bypass (meh). i got the slow motion (sg-1 clone) and it is awesome. I can sound like a synth now. I would love to try their other pedals, they have a ton.

edit: wow they also have the most shameless ripoff of a deluxe memory man that i've ever seen. i dont know how i feel about this one: http://behringer.com/VM1/index.cfm?lang=ENG

anyone ever played a Fender Sonoran?

It appears to have a stratocaster neck, and supposedly offers playability and feel somewhat close to that of an electric. Is this true? Does it sound like shit? Any other options for this sort of acoustic guitar?
