fuck that - it's easy enough to get the achievements if you play the game. i eventually unlocked all the new weapons for all the prior class releases. now some little shit who bought the game for 10 bucks this weekend can get them for doing jack shit? fuck. that. noise.

^ this kind of thing happens in any online multiplayer game.

some of the achievements aren't that easy to get, it's not like you can just roll through the game and get all the achievements overnight (unless you join an achievement server). besides, i'd rather not strain myself trying to get the achievements, i'd rather just play the game normally and have fun.

You know what I get for sniper acheivements?

I unlock Natasha for a 2nd time.

Apparently there are bugs with this. I dont know if I will be able to unlock my snipers weapons.

If the drops happened more often, I'd definitely like it more than achievements. But they don't, and there is no pattern at all. Someone on the server I played on unlocked the cloak&dagger while playing as spectator, and someone else unlocked nothing at all over the course of two hours.

There was some speculation that the reason old items are becoming re-unlockable is because they might introduce an item-trading system. I don't see why they go through all this trouble over it when as side-grades instead of upgrades the items should just be available almost immediately (they're supposed to be side-grades, anyway... many aren't).

yeah I got the Ambassador, spy gun today playing for the first time in months. Guys on the same server were all

"HOW LONG DO I NEED TO PLAY TO GET THE AMBASSADOR, GRRRRRRR"

"DUDE, A WHILE."

And I was a heavy or something when I got it....

2 hours and no weapon is nothing. thats like a small gaming session. If i get some kind of drop in a 10 hour window, i'd be happy. It would be completely useless if the weapons dropped like candy because every soul that plays tf2 would have all the weapons within a week or so.

And that is not a bad thing at all. In fact, that should be the entire goal of each update.

The only reason a huge portion of the TF2 playerbase even comes back each update is to be able to play with the new toys, and this new system practically ensures that you'll have to play the game like a part-time job if you want to unlock the new stuff within a reasonable time frame. And given that you can still find drops of junk you already have, the drop rate of special weapons is just too low. Add to that a drop system that's more random than fucking WoW, the fact that you can be spectating and still unlock stuff randomly, and the speculation that's being tossed around that the drop rate actually decreases depending on how much time you spend on the same server, and you get a completely un-intuitive method of weapon unlocks.

Also, it's nothing short of a poor design decision to require unlocking of weapons that are supposed to be side-grade alternatives (as opposed to direct upgrades) in the first place. They should be available either immediately or after a short amount of gameplay, being that they are (in theory) designed to be no better or worse than the old weapons, but simply with different benefits and drawbacks.

It's like giving a child a bunch of birthday presents and then telling them "Before we let you play with this, you'll need to play with your old toys for 40 hours. Then we might let you play with this new stuff... maybe. Or we might just give you more copies of the toys you already have." In what backwards world does that create fun/encourage good gameplay? (somewhat rhetorical question... not directed at whoever i quoted, I'm just venting my opinions on how good game design works and why the fuck valve isn't using it)

you do realize it will take a ton less time to get the weapons now than before? trying to get achievements was a pain in the ass. It's more fun to just play the game normally instead of having to stress out over stupid achievements. I played for about 3 hours today and got 4 weapons.

I played for 2 hours on a 32-person server... 4 guns dropped the entire time (between everyone there), and two of them were backburners. But maybe you've been lucky and I (and everyone on that server at the time) was just unlucky.

Except for the scout achievements (which it seemed like were needlessly time-consuming, but I also don't exactly play a very good scout. Doesn't help that my framerate goes to about 20fps when I stat moving that fast), it really didn't take long at all to complete them. Pyro was quick and easy, same for Heavy, and Medic got blown through quick if you had even remotely good teammates. I really didn't go out of my way to get most of them, either, just normal gameplay.

Besides, a ton of people out there were just using unlockers anyway to get them immediately, and despite valve's objections, there was nothing at all wrong with that gameplay-wise (unless of course valve wanted to milk playtime from people while they tried to unlock stuff, which even then isn't so much a gameplay issue as an issue of artificially extending game time using MMO-esque grinding).

My point here is that, basically, for side-grades in a team-based class-based FPS:
Not needing to unlock > Gameplay-based unlock system (this is assuming that achievements would be obtained while playing normally, and aren't excessively long... something that valve has failed in on both accounts at various times) > Completely random unlock system

i've gotten the hunstman, razorback and the ambassador, among several duplicates of old items. just leave yourself on an idle-allowing server while you sleep or something. i've gotten several just playing around too.

dumb system though... :-/

the huntsman is baller

Ambassador kicks ass once you get used to using it. Spy vs Pyro comes out in favor of the spy easily if the pyro doesn't strafe.

Pain in the ass for the achievements? Aside from the medic achievements, the rest of them have been a breeze. Hell, with the new sniper/spy ones, I got about half of them within an hour of play for each class, and I wasn't even trying to get them.

As far as the new system goes, it's pure garbage. It took me 2 full days to find my first weapon which was the axtinguisher, one I already had. Since, I've only been lucky enough to find the cloak and dagger. If it were still on the achievement system, I'd have all the new weapons within the first day (not even an entire day. more like 3 or 4 hours of actual gameplay).

yeah, I'd definitely recommend it

it's pretty cheap, and it's still my main game. left 4 dead isn't nearly as fun or replayable, and with left 4 dead 2 coming out later this year you aren't going to get many more updates out downloadable content

it's really sad that TF2 is going to get more DLC from this point forward than L4D will

Since they did the sniper pack and I got a 23" monitor, I have been playing some this weekend. Got several new weapons just from fucking around over a few hours time. Huntsman is fun, the new scout bat and scattergun are pretty good and I can't say as I noticed much difference between the new and old system myself. Truthfully didn't give a shit to research either. I never played for the specific weapons so I still don't even have the Natascha.

If you are looking to get a game on the cheap that is constantly getting updates, always has new maps coming out, and you have time to waste, go for it. I LOVE this game. The MP is so much less engrossing than MMORPG play that I actually have time to do this, but you can still frequently find yourself playing the same guys on the servers. I am personally a huge orange map fan, so any of the orange_x and other maps, esp. low gravity versions are my shit. Can't recommend this game enough.
