Wow, talk about a lot of bullshit. If ANY semi-automatic firearms gets fired a lot and the firing pin becomes caked up with grime, there's the potential for misfires and slamfires. SKS's are notorious for having slamfire issues that chew up entire magazines. 4/11/2008 5:21:51 PM |

^^ Worst thing is that a semi-automatic firearm is more likely to have this condition not when you first start shooting, but more likely as you go on shooting.
For a cosmoline locked firing pin on an SKS, that's an issue of not cleaning it the first time though. For most other semi-autos it's more likely to fail when it gets gummed up with grime from powder residue. 4/12/2008 9:57:56 PM |

^ true, but alot of people don't clean their sks bolt group on a regular basis or at all (on the account of how hard it is to disassemble).
Its also possible that, if you do clean your weapon on a regular basis you still could get a slamfire at the beginning, perhaps if you don't install the firing pin right or you bend it so it will stick in the fire position. Or if you shoot a different batch/make of ammo that has a 'softer' primer.

Regardless of how clean the firing mechanism in a semiauto is, there's still the chance of a bump fire. A friend of mine's got a AR-15 that has a light trigger pull and a short reset. If you pull gently at all you'll get a 3 round burst.
Is the ATF going to convict every guy on youtube who's bumpfired a semiauto just for fun?

Bump firing is different because that actually one trigger pull per shot fired. 4/13/2008 10:31:42 PM |
Fumbler All American 4670 Posts user info edit post |
Right, but my point is the trigger mechanism in that dude's AR is made for one pull, one fired round. How does the ATF know if it was bump fired, if the mechanism is faulty, or if it's a true class iii gun?
The news clip said "no illegal guns were found." How could he be charged with transfering a class iii weapon if they didn't find an illegal gun? While class iii guns aren't illegal, if he really did own one then he would be owning it illegally...making it an illegal gun.
I think the ATF is screwing themselves over on this one. 4/13/2008 11:15:28 PM |

The ATF isn't screwing themselves. It is there job to be big pricks about guns and such. The are a money-maker for the government. They just make a big stink about a lot of little shit all the time and collect taxes.
If the gun was just dirty causing it to go auto, then he had a machine gun. If he lent that to someone, he did an illegal transfer. If it jammed from being dirty, it was probably cleaned after the trip to the range making it no longer a machine gun.
You can't really argue the rules against the ATF because they make the rules. 4/13/2008 11:35:00 PM |

With tax+shipping on everything I will come out ~$700 before I even look at optics. Thank God for coops or i wouldnt be able to even think about buying this.

The M1A is the commercial and non selective fire version of the venerable M14 of Vietnam fame. An excellent battle rifle. You would be hard pressed to buy a rifle that fills the role better. The military still has M14s in service as sniper rifles (designated marksman?) in Iraq and Afganistan. They were also used for competition for many years in 1000yd matches. If you have the $$ you will have a lifetimes woth of rifle.
The mini 14 is similar in appearance to the M1A, just scaled down. they are very reliable but carry a stigma of not being accurate compared to an AR series rifle. They are accurate enough for deer hunting at sensible ranges, but the .223 is thought to be on the light side of things for longer shots on whitetail. It can still be used but you will have to be more selective with your shot placement. A friend keeps a mini14 on his tractor to regulate deer populations with good results. The new 6.8 SPC is offered in a mini 14 and delivers a heavier bullet and would help on the deer side of things. 4/23/2008 7:15:22 AM |

I could use some advice...
I want to buy a shotgun, purely for home-defense. I have been looking at a Mossberg 590 12 guage but I am worried that if it came to it, my girlfriend would not be able to handle it if she had to. She has a little experience with guns (she is a country girl)...do you think I should go with a 20 guage instead? 4/23/2008 8:22:35 AM |

u could always take here down to personal handgun self defense and have her shoot a shot gun down there to see if she can handle it. i know they have a shotgun "range," i dont know if they have shotguns to rent but i would assume so.
anyways isn't important that you can handle it...or are you out of town THAT much that she really needs to be able to shoot it?
have her try it out somewhere, i bet she can do it 4/23/2008 8:43:11 AM |

I am not gone all that much, I would just feel a lot more comfortable with it in the house if I knew she could properly use and handle it.

Mini-14s are good and reliable rifles, but they certainly wouldn't be in my list of something to shoot a deer with. Though it's often done, hunting deer with .22 centerfires isn't really what I would call bringing enough gun. Shot placement becomes much more important with one of these mouseguns than it is with one of the other 'big game' calibers. Get something that throws a bullet of 6mm or greater caliber for deer hunting.4/23/2008 10:23:31 AM |

imo, deer hunting with less than a .243 (even that's too small for me) is unethical. just a breeze makes the difference between a deer in the truck and an injured deer deep in the woods that you'll never find.
just get a 30-30. that won't break the bank. 4/23/2008 2:09:11 PM |
Fumbler All American 4670 Posts user info edit post |
The Ruger Mini-14 also comes in 7.62x39 (called the Mini-30). I'd pick that over a Mini-14, but your range would still be limited and hunting ammo selection is limited. With a soft point it should be comparable to a 30-30Win or a little better. I wouldn't mind having a Mini, but I'd do some work to it. They have a bad reputation for accuracy, mostly due to the thin barrel that isn't bedded well or floated. Wood stocked Rugers in general have poor bedding.

A 20ga would still make a nice home defense gun and is a bit less painful to shoot.
My personal opinion is you should still get a 12ga, but buy some reduced recoil loads. You don't need full velocity buckshot for home defense and the 8 00 pellets in reduced recoil loads are plenty of lead. Reduced recoil loads typically feel like regular birdshot. Any woman who isn't afraid of guns can learn to handle that with a couple of short trips to the range.4/23/2008 4:19:51 PM |

I was pretty much against having one until I ran across an early 184-series stainless one with the old-school AC-556-style factory folding stock on it. It was priced favorably (I actually seen those stocks sell for what I paid for the whole gun) and it came home with me, mostly because I grew up watching the A-Team and it looked cool.
It's turned out to be a decent plinker and at least has saucer-plate accuracy out to 100 or so, which is fine for a little iron-sighted carbine I reckon. I can hardly do much better with my old CAR-15. Now if the price on .223 would just come down some...

That's a fairly decent deal for one. It's what I paid for mine with just the 10-rounder. As far as conversions to use a pistol grip, it's relatively easy if you have a dremel and a few common shop tools. The only major difference between a Saiga and an AK as far as the receiver goes is the location of the trigger group. You can buy a regular AK group and with some very basic gunsmithing, put it in to move the group up so that the receiver can accommodate normal AK furniture. Expect to spend around $50 for the trigger parts, and about that much again for some decent furniture.
The only thing to keep in mind if you're *really* all about keeping it legal is the 922R stuff, so you need to replace some more stuff on it to keep the US part count happy. http://forum.saiga-12.com/ is the definitive resource for everything Saiga-related. They have info on conversions, parts, 922R, the works.4/29/2008 12:48:37 AM |

As far as buying pistol ammo in the common calibers, you're almost always going to be hard pressed to beat Wal-Mart. I have another source that occasionally has 9mm, .40, or .45 at bargain (for this day and age) prices, but I can't tell everyone everything
I've shot thousands of rounds of Georgia Arms stuff in the past in several calibers. Good, consistent, high-quality stuff. I've seen their hunting loads in 30.06 and .270 outshoot factory Federal Premium and Winchester Supreme several times. I seldom buy any of it anymore however because I now have started to roll my own and would rather spend the money on components and powder. 4/29/2008 9:39:29 AM |
