Probably have you been over to Beaufort? We were wondering how fishing has been around that way. Also Sneads Ferry has been a good place.

the picnic area i'm talking about is on the point dead center of this map:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=&daddr=Slocum+Rd&hl=en&geocode=%3BFfzQFAIdr2Jq-w&mra=mr&sll=34.919948,-76.909897&sspn=0.012861,0.01914&ie=UTF8&ll=34.919825,-76.909726&spn=0.012861,0.01914&t=h&z=16

do you have a boat? based on what my dad and his gf caught today, if i was stuck on the bank and could get to that picnic area, i would DEFINITELY fish there

[Edited on November 23, 2008 at 8:26 PM. Reason : that whitish gravel driveway takes you right there]

also, if you pan north in that map, on the opposite side of the creek, near the end of the runway, there's a little pier that military folks can drive to. that would be an awesome place to go if you don't have a boat. it's only a few feet above the water, but you'll want a pier net. i watched a guy lose several nice trout fishing from that pier one day because he didn't have a drop net. you can make a cheap one out of a bicycle rim and a replacement net from walmart and some rope if you're interested in trying that place.

i caught a huge flounder on the boat by casting right up next to that dock/pier

[Edited on November 23, 2008 at 8:31 PM. Reason : ^^never heard of lucky point. only one that shows up in google maps is in CA]

[Edited on November 23, 2008 at 8:32 PM. Reason : it's easy to relate stuff with that map because of the runway]

I had a really weird day fishing where not only was nothing caught, but nothing was seen either. Put in between Swansboro and the bridge to Emerald Isle. Fished everywhere from the bridge to Swansboro, up the inlet towards Bear Island, the Bear Island banks, etc. and didn't catch anything. We were throwing out bottom rigs with shrimp and casting with gulp baits on lead heads. I tried casting, jigging, and trolling with the bottom rigs out every time we stopped.

What's even worse is that we didn't even see any fish. Normally if you hang a gulp bait by the boat the minnows will swarm it, but nothing even touched them today. The crabs weren't even stealing the bait off the bottom rigs at any of the spots. You could cast out a piece of shrimp and it would still be there 30 minutes later.

I did see a dead octopus. Took a minute to figure out if it was a dead octopus or an albino octopus. A good poking with the fishing rod confirmed it was a dead octopus.

Really weird day fishing overall. Everyone we talked to at the ramp had the same experience. I wonder what caused it?

I have next to zero experience in saltwater/brackish fishing. I mostly fish freshwater for catfish/bass. The only time I went saltwater is when I went down to my uncle's place in florida and went surf-fishing with him for some pompano.

thinking about going out to the CL Rock Jetty next weekend. If the weather is good, think I could make it out there in my 17' flat bottom skiff? I've never tried to take her out of the inlet.

why go to the jetty and fight that fucking crowd when they're catching gator trout in the creeks? people get to the jetty at 3 and 4 am to get a good spot. it's not worth it to me.

but to answer your question, it depends on the weather. on a slick day, i've seen guys out there on boats like my 16' aluminum one in my gallery. this is dumb and unsafe. you should be fine on a 17' skiff. we used to go on our 18' polar CC skiff.

but yeah, it's guaranteed you'll be fighting a crowd at CL jetty. most people consider the jetty amateur hour (even though you'll usually catch a lot of big ones there) and consider becoming a creek fisherman to be "graduating". takes a bit more skill, but it's so much more relaxing and rewarding. ymmv.

Bombed out at wateree on the stripers....only caught 6 all day...biggest one about 12 pounds. Could be worse, but we were hoping for a big day, and we fished hard for those scattered 6 fish.

^^I fish for whatever wants to bite the end of my hook. I'd like to get into some trout...like I said earlier, I had thought about trying my luck at the CL Jetty on Friday, in hopes that it wont be as crazy as it would be on a saturday. I may try to hit the Haystacks, Middle Marsh, somewhere like that. I've even heard that they've caught some decent fish in Taylors Creek here recently.

the jetty will be crowded on a friday. hell, it will be crowded any day of the week. i got so tired of fucking with it that i'll stay home before i go to the jetty now.

if you really don't wanna go to a creek, here's some places around that area that are often overlooked. atlantic beach bridge has produced many nice trout and isn't usually that crowded if the weather allows folks to get to the jetty. the morehead city/radio island bridge and the RR trestle have also produced some keeper trout for me. the haystacks are good on high tide, so give them a try. when the water gets low in there, try the nearby holes. my favorite is where you go north under the MHC/RI bridge, take a left around the phosphate plant's concrete wall. you'll go down a narrow channel past towboat US and there will be some navy or CG boats on your left. across from that there's some bundled up pilings (like a bunch of pilings tied together with heavy cable). i think there's two or three of the bundles and there's a deeeeep hole near them. we always tied to one of the bundles and threw back to the hole. there's also a deep hole near the east end of taylor's creek. when you come out of taylor's creek, the channel markers run east toward calico jack's, etc. to your right (south) there's a marsh. you'll see the grass. up next to that marsh is a deep hole that often holds trout. we catch cobia there in the summer too.

kept 5 specks of about 10 caught friday near new bern. place was fucking crowded. two of them were nice fish (one a little over 2 lbs) we caught that morning as soon as the sun got up and burned off the clouds. the rest of the fish were small and had to be measured. nice weather though. need some NE wind. hopefully i'll get one over christmas break.

Preciate the info. I just might stay inshore instead of heading to the jetty. I'm planning to head down Thursday night. Are you going to be down there this weekend? I'm watching the weather still trying to decide if I want to pull the boat down or not. I'd hate to pull her all the way down there and then get blown out.

about the only freshwater fishing i do is catfishing the neuse around goldsboro, shad fishing the neuse and little in the spring, and random bream fishing to kill time in the summer.

you going anytime soon?

wish I could...this racing shit has me tied up for a while. Not real sure when I'll be able to head East again...hopefully before Daytona. Look on the bright side though...the weather will be good while I'm not there. It always seems to turn crappy when I make plans to go fishing.

as long as the wind doesn't blow too hard, i don't mind rain. wind makes it impossible to maneuver the boat with the minn-kota, but rain scares the lightweights off and leaves the die hards, who know how to show some respect.

Some of you offshore guys might want to swing by Overtons soon (WF Road), they have Pescador clothing 75% off. I got some nice rigging pants and some rigging/board shorts.
http://www.pescadorbrand.com/products.cfm

Apparently Pescador is going out of business, so they are pretty much dumping this stuff, great stuff tho. These are the pants I got, $20 bucks is great IMO.
