While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's health-care plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.

"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her proposal."

Regaining their lead in the polls? I hope they keep that up too.

Obama said after the lipstick
Quote :
"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change; it’s still going to stink after 8 years."

If the lipstick on a pig comment is to be taken to refer to Palin, then which part of her anatomy does the old fish comment refer to, I wonder? I bet the TRUTH SQUAD won't have the balls to touch that ... or will they?

^ how is that remotely about Palin? He was talking about all McCain's policies that were similar to Bush's, and Palin hadn't come up yet at all in the speech. The pig here is Bush and his policies. I don't see where they are getting Palin in all this. And immediately after that (which your video conveniently cut out, what are you trying to hide?), he made another analogy (that was not so eloquent, IMO) about wrapping a fish in a paper that says change, who is he attacking there, Palin again?

I can't believe you don't see how you've been tricked by the McCain camp in to looking like a fool on this pseudo-issue.

McCain's campaign called the comments "offensive and disgraceful" and said Obama owes Palin an apology. Obama's campaign said he wasn't referring to Palin and said the GOP camp was engaging in a "pathetic attempt to play the gender card." Obama's camp also noted that McCain once used the same phrase to describe Hillary Rodham Clinton's health care plan."

McCain also criticized the health care proposals of Democratic presidential candidates as attempts at a "one-size-fits-all, big government takeover of health care" ( CQ HealthBeat , 10/11). He said that the proposal recently announced by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) is "eerily" similar to the plan she proposed in the 1990s. He added, "I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig" ( New York Times , 10/12).

Here's the link:

http://enews.earthlink.net/article/top?guid=20080909/48c5f4c0_3ca6_15526200809092042112473

Here is the Obama response:
Enough is enough. The McCain campaign’s attack tonight is a pathetic attempt to play the gender card about the use of a common analogy – the same analogy that Senator McCain himself used about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s health care plan just last year. This phony lecture on gender sensitivity is the height of cynicism and lays bare the increasingly dishonorable campaign John McCain has chosen to run.

Yea, after watching the clip in context it really doesn't seem like he was referring to Palin at all. Really a non-issue and McCain trying to pull the victim card again which they've been doing a lot with the media, Palin's family, etc.

Yeah, I guess you are right moron. I mean, with the pause and audience reaction, I think most of those dems got the message.

Your boy is one damage control now.

Apparently lipstick was the word of the day for Dems yesterday.

Introducing Joe Biden as "one of the foremost experts in foreign affairs in the country" in St. Louis just now, my colleague Victoria McGrane reports, Rep. Russ Carnahan also took a swipe at Palin.

“For all his tough talk [McCain] buckled to the right wing of his party in his choice. Picked someone with zero experience in national government, zero experience in foreign affairs. There’s no way you can dress up that record, even with a lot of lipstick," he said.

You know, deep down, that he knew he could say that attack then hide behind "its just a figure of speech". Its childish and people have seen it and now he has to do damage control. I hope he keeps this up. Bodes well for the country.

^^ It's satire. The source is me.

I watched the Obama video, and from what I saw he was talking about McCain's policies before, and after, the comment. I just wanted to take the intentional misinterpretation to its extreme.

The whole thing is an attempt to "muzzle" Obama. It's a joke.

"New McCain Ad: Obama Favors Sex-Ed For Kindergartners
Posted by Brian Montopoli| 63

The McCain campaign has released a new ad, "Education," that suggests Barack Obama favors teaching sex education to kindergartners. A McCain aide tells CBS News the ad will air on Fox News and in select markets in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Missouri, Ohio, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

"Education Week says Obama 'hasn't made a significant mark on education,'" an announcer says as the spot opens. "That he's 'elusive' on accountability. A 'staunch defender of the existing public school monopoly.'"

The announcer continues: "Obama's one accomplishment? Legislation to teach 'comprehensive sex education' to kindergartners. Learning about sex before learning to read? Barack Obama. Wrong on education. Wrong for your family."

Campaign spokesman Robert Gibbs told CBS News the legislation Obama supported provided information to children on what to watch for when with an adult they don't know, such as inappropriate advances or touching.

“It is shameful and downright perverse for the McCain campaign to use a bill that was written to protect young children from sexual predators as a recycled and discredited political attack against a father of two young girls – a position that his friend Mitt Romney also holds," Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. "Last week, John McCain told Time magazine he couldn’t define what honor was. Now we know why."
"

Fuck the McCain campaign. That's some messed up shit.

"McCain's campaign said Obama's remarks were offensive and a slap at Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin -- despite the fact that the Arizona senator himself used the phrase last year to describe a policy proposal of Hillary Clinton's.

"

Not to support Obama; but didn't Palin and many other speakers in the GOP RNC spend half the time just bashing Obama?? Maybe it's one of those double standards things. Like how evangelicals are allowed to use Palin's family history (not aborting a mentally challenged baby, and encouraging her 17 yr old slut of a daughter to have her bastard child) as a sign of pro-life and moral character. Where as GOPs dissatisfied by McCain's choice for VP and the liberals are not allowed to touch on the subject as a disqualification.

If McCain wants to win maybe he needs to spend more time talking the issues and proving that eventhough he picked Palin who'd admin will not bring in some backward religious right era for this country. Instead of what McCain is currently doing pointing fingers and playing lip service to the traditional blah blah liberal big spending ZOMG.

Hell even Huckabee cut Obama some slack saying the remark was not a direct attack on Palin; and is being blown out of proportion by McCain's campaign org.

Quote :
"McCain ally Mike Huckabee took Obama's side on the issue, saying he didn't think it was a swipe at Palin.

"It's an old expression, and I'm going to have to cut Obama some slack on that one. I do not think he was referring to Sarah Palin; he didn't reference her. If you take the two sound bites together, it may sound like it," he said on Fox's "Hannity and Colmes."

Lipstick on a pig is a phrase both McCain & Obama have used before. McCain used it against Hillary. Huckabee agrees McCain is misunderstanding it & being a little touchy-feely hypersensitive.

no, it's simply an overused [old] political phrase, huckabee is right.

the difference between how they used it and obama using it is that obama KNEW he was taking a cheap shot at palin and his audience knew it and thats why they laughed so hard.

i'm sure you are all wondering, like i am, where did obamas mojo go? he used to be so poetic, and so involved in his speeches. now he's just a cheap comedian, with no punch line other than sexism

Wow, this article hits McCain hard and criticizes his campaign. And this is coming from a used to be supporter of his.

Plus, it is precisely my biggest problem I have with them right now. It's just fucking unethical and bullshit the way they run the campaign. It wins them elections but it's so fucked-up.

This article articulates a perfect summation of it. I recommend everyone read it. I know McCain supporters will rush to his support but that's OK.

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/09/mccains-integri.html

Quote :
"For me, this surreal moment - like the entire surrealism of the past ten days - is not really about Sarah Palin or Barack Obama or pigs or fish or lipstick. It's about John McCain. The one thing I always thought I knew about him is that he is a decent and honest person. When he knows, as every sane person must, that Obama did not in any conceivable sense mean that Sarah Palin is a pig, what did he do? Did he come out and say so and end this charade? Or did he acquiesce in and thereby enable the mindless Rovianism that is now the core feature of his campaign?

So far, he has let us all down. My guess is he will continue to do so. And that decision, for my part, ends whatever respect I once had for him. On core moral issues, where this man knew what the right thing was, and had to pick between good and evil, he chose evil. When he knew that George W. Bush's war in Iraq was a fiasco and catastrophe, and before Donald Rumsfeld quit, McCain endorsed George W. Bush against his fellow Vietnam vet, John Kerry in 2004. By that decision, McCain lost any credibility that he can ever put country first. He put party first and his own career first ahead of what he knew was best for the country.

And when the Senate and House voted overwhelmingly to condemn and end the torture regime of Bush and Cheney in 2006, McCain again had a clear choice between good and evil, and chose evil.

He capitulated and enshrined torture as the policy of the United States, by allowing the CIA to use techniques as bad as and worse than the torture inflicted on him in Vietnam. He gave the war criminals in the White House retroactive immunity against the prosecution they so richly deserve. The enormity of this moral betrayal, this betrayal of his country's honor, has yet to sink in. But for my part, it now makes much more sense. He is not the man I thought he was.

And when he had the chance to engage in a real and substantive debate against the most talented politician of the next generation in a fall campaign where vital issues are at stake, what did McCain do? He began his general campaign with a series of grotesque, trivial and absurd MTV-style attacks on Obama's virtues and implied disgusting things about his opponent's patriotism.

And then, because he could see he was going to lose, ten days ago, he threw caution to the wind and with no vetting whatsoever, picked a woman who, by her decision to endure her own eight-month pregnancy of a Down Syndrome child in public, that he was going to reignite the culture war as a last stand against Obama. That's all that is happening right now: a massive bump in the enthusiasm of the Christianist base. This is pure Rove.

Yes, McCain made a decision that revealed many appalling things about him. In the end, his final concern is not national security. No one who cares about national security would pick as vice-president someone who knows nothing about it as his replacement. No one who cares about this country's safety would gamble the security of the world on a total unknown because she polled well with the Christianist base. No person who truly believed that the surge was integral to this country's national security would pick as his veep candidate a woman who, so far as we can tell anything, opposed it at the time.

McCain has demonstrated in the last two months that he does not have the character to be president of the United States. And that is why it is more important than ever to ensure that Barack Obama is the next president. The alternative is now unthinkable. And McCain - no one else - has proved it."

This is no worse than palin, who's being babied from the media, quotes verbatim the same speech she used at the RNC (and try and tell me that her speech wasn't written by rove or scully). if i hear her say "this is the only man who truly fought for you," or "thanks, but no thanks for that bridge to nowhere," or brag about how she fired her personal chef as if that's evidence of her ability to lead a country, i'm going to puke.

this is pathetic pandering from the republican party. anyone with any logic knows the pig in lipstick comment was referring to the mccain tactics of jazzing up the ticket to evoke the sense of "change." they totally are userping the obama campaign theme here, and it's shameful that it actually is working.

good game to obama for calling this out and sticking to the issues in his last speech.

been getting your talking points from gop.com, i see

there is a time and place for inter-party debates. During primary season and before the conventions is not that time. McCain knows this and knew that nobody would agree to debates before the conventions, but since he has his own campaign tied up by then, he just used it as a "gotcha point"

i gotta say, the lipstick comment is being blown out of proportion. Was it a bad plan for Obama to say it? probably, but only because it could easily be turned around in the way that McCain is doing it. I don't think Obama is stupid enough to say something like that.

Oh, and if McCain knows what's good for him, he'll shut the fuck up about it, too. Blowing this out of proportion will backfire big time, losing him whatever "women-bounce" he might have gotten for chosing Palin.

I'm posting this just because I like the title of the article:
"When Life Gives You Pigs with Lipstick, Make Sexy Bacon"

edit:
When it rains, it pours I guess... Here's yet another swift-boat-esque move out of the McCain side:
"McCain-Palin Distorts Our Finding"
Quote :
"A McCain-Palin ad has FactCheck.org calling Obama's attacks on Palin "absolutely false" and "misleading." That's what we said, but it wasn't about Obama.

Our article criticized anonymous e-mail falsehoods and bogus claims about Palin posted around the Internet. We have no evidence that any of the claims we found to be false came from the Obama campaign.

The McCain-Palin ad also twists a quote from a Wall Street Journal columnist. He said the Obama camp had sent a team to Alaska to "dig into her record and background." "

It's almost like Rove himself is back in the game running things. If not Rove, I wonder who is behind these scumbag strategies?

edit2:

I would also like to specifically point out to eyedrb that people laughed and McCain paused when he used the same expression: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR8IhMMhe8w
It really is a humorous expression too, when you think about it.

Saw this on Ben Smith's blog today. I can't believe O'Reilly actually says positive things after his huge sessions of interviews with Obama...the world must be turning upside down.

Quote :
"Bill O'Reilly muses on his interview with Obama, and while he doesn't like his policies...it's amazing what some access will do:

" On the foreign policy front, Obama has convinced me that he is tough but cautious. He rose up quickly because he vehemently opposed the Iraq war. But now I see a man who understands the victory that has taken place in Iraq. I don't believe he wants to screw that up. I could be wrong.

After going mano-a-mano with Obama on television, I am also persuaded that he is a sincere guy-that he wants the best for all Americans. He's an ideologue, but not a blind one. He understands that his story is incredible, and, I have come to believe, he is grateful to the American system for allowing it happen.""

Too bad 60% of the populace lacks the intelligence or the logical reasoning to understand the controversy occurring on either side. In reality they will just make judgements based on crafty ads; and rely on their own personal biases to make a vote (rather if they black voting obama or white voting mccain). Disregarding the issues of which candidate would actually benefit them better.

Also:

Looks like republican/libertarian Ron Paul endorsed & called for his followers to vote 3rd party. He gave a few options, but it seems to me the most overlap will be with the republican/libertarian Bob Barr who has the libertarian's nomination to run for president along with his vice presidential nominee republican/libertarian Wayne Allyn Root.

Looks like there is now a place for disaffected republicans to go.

Clinton is kind of a joke, but I can't see him hurting Obama. People love him.
