I'm glad that Yesterday and Today has a different sound than From Here We Go Sublime. I was worried that Axel would be a one-trick pony but the varied tracks show some longevity. I'm not digging that second track though.

Ben Harper and his new band "Ben Harper & the Relentless 7" put out a record yesterday called "White Lies for Dark Times". reviews say that it is a much more rock oriented record than Ben's normal style, and he plays a lot of throwback rock and roll guitar progressions/chords/scales.

I'm very interested to hear it.

Quote :
"In a hostile sea of disposable, throwaway singles, Ben Harper and Relentless7 have made a true album. White Lies for Dark Times is a timeless rock record, with a cohesive collection of music that is as raw, unrelenting and thunderous, as it is arrestingly haunting and emotional.
On the raucous opening track, "Number with No Name," Harper bellows "the very thing that drives you -- can drive you insane" over an infectious guitar line and a deftly serious groove that both thumps and propels the listener. The band then brings the listener full circle in the closing track "Faithfully Remain," as Harper sings, "the truth just wastes away in all we can't explain, but I faithfully remain."

The beauty of these lyrics works as a breathtaking release which balances out the anthemic urgency of songs such as "Shimmer and Shine" and "Up to You Now," both of which are surely soon to be familiar staples at radio. This is American rock, the way it is supposed to sound and feel.

"

on a different note, how is the new Metric? rolling stone was pretty big on it.

it's decent. there are a couple on there ("gold, guns, girls" and "blindness" come to mind) that i really liked and a couple that i found quite skippable. the rest were some where in the middle.

the past couple weeks i've drifted away from my 2009 albums and gone back a decade or so. I've been on a huge Steve Earle binge lately, and threw the Jayhawks back into the mix.

Has anyone heard anything from Steve Earle's new album, Townes?

I have not. I don't get into his stuff too much but "Transcendental Blues" is awesome.

I've been listening to a lot of the Dismemberment Plan at work again. Their bass player and especially drummer were just absolutely phenomenal for their style of music.

That new Patrick Wolf album is so over-the-top with production that it drags down a few songs. However, I do enjoy it and it deserves a listen. The album cover is ridiculous.

He will be playing at Cats Cradle in June and I'm tempted to go. Has anyone else seen him live?

I got around to listening to It's Blitz finally and I'm really digging it. The acoustic tracks of several songs from the album and the two B-sides are worth getting as well.

Cif82--- I'm with you on the Patrick Wolf. That album as nothing on Lycanthrophy, Wind in the Wires or even Magic Position. A little too over done.

There's a not so interesting story on the album cover --- it was originally supposed to be done by a friend of his, then they had some spat or something, and he went another direction..... a horrible, retarded direction.

I have never seen him live before, but will likely attend the June show.

Completely unrelated, but I hope this doesn't hurt Schoolkids.

not worried about Best Buy's vinyl section. Sure, it will probably hurt some, but I bet they'll only be carrying the major label/bigger name rock stuff anyways. We have 100s of new records in our store including rock/hip-hop/electronic/blues/reggae/r&b/metal.... not to mention used vinyl (which admittedly isn't usually great). I just can't see someone that buys a lot of vinyl going to Best Buy as their main option

Plus they've been selling records in their online store for the last year.. we still saw a 200% increase in new record sales in 2008

I'll reserve final judgements until a few more listens, but this Wilco album sounds just about as boring as Sky Blue Sky. I think it's more than clear now how important Jay Bennett was to this band.

No real music fan is going to find anything they want (or at least anything they don't already have) in the vinyl section of Best Buy.

I can see vinyl sales continuing to increase as all the companies switch to a vinyl+digital format. If you get a free download with vinyl purchase, there's absolutely no reason to buy the CD.

^ really interesting project. any idea how to get MP3s? It says a legal dispute is keeping Danger Mouse from being able to release the music on CD... yet the book comes with a CD-R to do with what you wish. Where can the MP3s be found?

ive cheated and let myself hear about 5 of the songs off the new TMV album that have been floating around. I only listened once through all but the singles since I want to hear the album in the correct order, but I'm really liking what I have heard. Very different from their last few albums. Still getting a vibe that feels like it could have been in between de-loused and frances the mute as far as sound goes, which is awesome.

Cif82: I saw Patrick wolf in NYC last may and he was very very good. His voice sounds ridiculously good live and he interacts with the crowd a good amount. He is so flamboyantly gay and super skinny, kinda funny. I was amazed that he could sing like that given his build.

definately check him out if you can fit it into your schedule

Everyone loved it so much he played 3 I had no idea he was going to be there and thought it was pretty awesome.

Back when I worked at the Carolina Theatre, Doc Watson played a concert there. He brought a shitload of homemade food for the staff. Fried chicken, biscuits, mashed potatoes, everything you would expect your southern grandma to make. It was fucking amazing.

Link to a "4 song sampler EP" with tracks 1, 4, 5, 6 from the new The Mars Volta album that comes out in a month. I am absolutely loving everything I've heard from this album so far.

If you liked songs like "Televators" from de-loused and songs like "The Widow" and "Miranda..." on Frances the Mute you will really love this album. They focused on shorter "pop" songs as they called them and overall just put focus into..well "focus" on this album for those people that don't like the super long dragged out prog on their last few albums. I happen to love all that as well but I love this too and think a lot of people who don't normally dig them will like this.

Based on these 4 songs, if the rest of this album is as good or better it could easily shoot to my #1 of the year once I get the entire thing.
