Dammit since no one reads the last post, I am reposting this due to the epic nature of Uggla's slump
Quote : | " The Braves second baseman had a two-homer, five-RBI game on June 5 at Miami, and since then it’s been he’s been the worst hitter in baseball.
Uggla has hit .110 (15-for-136) with two doubles, two homers, nine RBIs and 55 strikeouts in 42 games since then, and he’s gone hitless in 10 of his past 11 games, with at least three at-bats in each of those 10 0-for’s. He’s 0-for-21 with nine strikeouts in his past seven games.
The home fans are getting restless – actually they’ve been that way for a while about Uggla – and it’s probably because they have seen Uggla at his worst. Uggla’s .209 overall average this season includes .181 (and a .297 slugging percentage) in 48 games at Turner Field, where he’s hit four homers and struck out 60 times in 155 at-bats. It gets worse.
In his past 20 home games, Uggla has hit .063 (4-for-64) with one double, two RBIs, 12 walks, 30 strikeouts – yes, 30 strikeouts in 64 at-bats – and a .319 OPS (.078 slugging percentage). " |
A .078 slugging percentage. How is that even possible for a MLB regular? Pitchers hit better than that.

Uggla is pretty much Jack Wilson without the good defense. Dude is horrible right now and probably needs to be benched except that the Braves only have Pastornicky to fill in and he's just as bad at the plate and even worse in the field. Simmons won't be back until late August so Janish is entrenched at SS. Easily the worst middle IF in all of baseball.
Oh yeah and today is Monday so the either Buerhle is pitching a no-no tonight or Hanson is going to get hammered. I'll take the latter. 7/30/2012 2:43:53 PM |

^ That is actually a good suggestion, but Fredi will pretend he is Bobby Cox and stay loyal to Uggla. Seriously they should give him a week off, not sure if they can send him down to AAA to try and get some confidence back. 7/30/2012 3:17:29 PM |

i've heard vizcaino's name for like 3 years....hasn't done anything of note yet.
Also, Maholm has dropped his era from 5+ to 3.78 in his last 6 starts, not allowing more than one ER in any of those starts. Puts another lefty in the rotation.
Hanson, Hudson, Sheets, Minor, Maholm?

I am not a fan of this trade. Vizcaino is still a high level prospect who's been out due to Tommy John. Maholm has been great recently, but the guy is not a front line starter and I hate seeing the Braves give up pitching potential.
I do like Reed Johnson as he's a good all around player in a platoon role. Solid pickup. I don't know anything about the Chapman dude other than he was getting more than a K per inning at AAA so he must have some talent. I hope the Braves are not regretting this deal three years from now. At least they still have Delgado I guess.

And Beachy and Hanson and Teheran and Minor (who doesn't suck?). Braves were going to have to give up one of the pitchers eventually, and this seems like a good enough deal.7/31/2012 8:28:47 AM |
rflong All American 11472 Posts user info edit post |
I forget about Beachy for some reason. Maholm is under contract through next season too so that makes the deal more attractive. You're right that they definitely need to move some of these guys seeing that Delgado, Teheran and Medlen are are still in the mix and who knows what will happen with Sheets next year and JJ.
Forecasting next season's rotation (yeah premature)
1. Hanson 2. Hudson 3. Beachy 4. Minor 5. Sheets/Maholm
Delgado, Teheran, Medlen, JJ. Amazing depth on paper, but not amazing quality. No clear #1 starter. Plus Beachy will start the year on the DL. Maybe the Braves will package some of the SP for another OF bat and move Prado to 3B.

Good move by Wren. Viz has a live arm, but IIRC they were grooming him for the pen moreso than the rotation. I think it had something with him not having a good blend of pitches (i.e. he throws a couple of great pitches, not so much on a third or fourth pitch). And I'm not even sure I know who Chapman is.
Reed is great for what he is: a quality 4th OF, a good hitter and a guy you can rotate in and give others days off. We needed a RHB, and I'm not sure there are many other available bench-types that are better options. I'm assuming he takes Costanza's spot.
Maholm has been one of the best SPs since the ASB. He's not an ace, but he's been a decent pitcher for the past couple of years, and as already mentioned, under contract for next year provided we pick up his team option. If he's your #4 or 5 SP, then the rotation is in alright shape. A guess, but Avilan probably goes back to AAA.
I think Wren wants a reliever still. Medlen was supposed to start today (and still might), but with the addition of Maholm, maybe Medlen stays in the pen, effectively reducing our need for a BP arm.
I still think we need a reliever though. Moylan is rehabbing, maybe he can make the roster soon. 7/31/2012 10:38:04 AM |

^^Medlen will make the start tonight plus one more to give BMFT rest and then move back to the pen. The move effectively fills the three roles needed (starter, bullpen and OF bench) by only acquiring 2 players.

That is a pretty good question honestly. Hudson and Hanson, maybe Sheets, but none are obvious choices. The Braves biggest weakness right now is their lack of top of the line starting pitching even though they have good depth.7/31/2012 5:31:38 PM |

Well said, R. Flong. Braves really need a #1 to emerge next year. I really think Hanson can be that guy if he can go more than 4 consistently.

Medlen looked great last night especially after giving up that early HR. Hanson placed on the DL yesterday so Medlen I assume will get at least a couple more starts. Has JJ been banished to the bullpen yet, what are the Braves doing with him?
The rotation as of right now with Hanson out is:
Hudson Sheets Minor Maholm Medlen
What are the Braves doing with Delgado too? 8/1/2012 7:23:26 AM |

I only saw the first 5 innings and went to bed after the rain delay. I see now that JJ did get to pitch. On the AJC this morning, it sounded like JJ would be released today to make room for Maholm. Crazy how far JJ has fallen in just over a year. 8/1/2012 8:01:15 AM |

jesus, how many people did we leave on base last night?
and pinch hitting Pastornicky for Janish was laughable. and I loved Fredi's post game comments that Pastornicky was best offensive option. Janish hasn't hit the ball well but he had two hits last night and almost a third when he roped one in the gap that was caught.
and there's nothing like seeing runners on 2nd and 3rd with Uggla coming up to bat. I've almost designated his ABs for bathroom breaks. one slow roller to second base and one pop-up to first base give me a fucking break, guy. 8/2/2012 8:33:43 AM |

Braves have no one to blame but themselves for being behind the Nats. They have played like complete dog crap against Washington all season. If the Braves starting pitching continues it's recent run, the Braves will overtake the Nats. With Minor pitching better, Delgado in AAA, and JJ in the pen, the Braves rotation is about 2X better than it was a 6 weeks ago. 8/6/2012 9:33:49 AM |
