http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/07/23/report-panthers-trade-for-raiders-wr-louis-murphy/
Quote : | "The Panthers and Raiders swapped unwanted spare parts earlier this offseason, and have now agreed to another trade.
According to Jason Cole of Yahoo.com, the Raiders sent wide receiver Louis Murphy to the Panthers. There’s no word at the moment what’s headed the other direction, but it can’t be too much.
Murphy has 90 catches in three seasons, with a healthy 15.2 yards per catch average. The Panthers are always looking for deep speed, and Murphy has it. He caught just 15 passes last year, was due to make $1.26 million this season and was on the roster bubble this year.
In March, the Panthers sent running back Mike Goodson to the Raiders in exchange for offensive lineman Bruce Campbell, swapping a fast return man with bad hands for a talented tackle who was miscast at guard." |

Hopefully he won't see the field. He was awful his rookie season and just marginally bad the past two seasons.
He's a possession receiver with a below average catch rate and a lot of drops his first two seasons. Not much to like.
To put things in perspective he has averaged 5 drops a year over the last three seasons. Naanee had 3 last season. At least Naanee could block really well.
On the flip side we know he uses illegal Viagra pills at his sex parties so I guess that's cool for the guys who live in Charlotte.

I mean he's not Santana Moss/Wes Welker or anything but he's not exactly Mike Wallace/Torrey Smith either.
Let's look at his 2010 numbers since he only had 15 catches last year, not much of a sample size.
2010:
Short 22%, Mid 47%, Deep 19%, Bomb 12%.
In 2009 the numbers were a little deeper but he was horrendous that year and had a 35% completion rate for god's sake. 7/23/2012 2:23:01 PM |

The average NFL receiver has caught 57% of the passes thrown to him each of the last three years.
Murphy: 35%, 53%, 45%
He had 15 catches for 241 yards and 0 TD last season.
He's only 25 and sometimes it takes WR's 3-4 seasons to figure things out so he's not a complete lost cause but he wasn't going to make the Raiders roster this year so let's not get too carried away here. 7/23/2012 2:30:44 PM |

Jesus I just looked into that 35% catch rate he put up in 2009. I know the Raiders had QB issues but that was the 10th lowest % in the entire NFL since 1991. 7/23/2012 2:41:17 PM |

makes sense. We're set at LT, C, and RG with Gross, Kalil, and Hangartner (big season last year).
At LG we have that 2nd round rookie and Pollack.
At RT I guess we're going to go with Bryan Bell (sucks at pass blocking but a good run blocker) or Bruce Campbell who may be able to convert to tackle.
We don't need Otah and his big ass injured reserve salary. Sucks though, thought he was going to be a good one. 7/23/2012 5:12:56 PM |

Issues? JaMarcus Russell was their starting quarterback, for chrissakes. Murphy was starting as a rookie, and he was Russell's favorite WR. It was a recipe for disaster.
Sometimes you have to actually watch the games, Face. I've seen Murphy play quite a bit. Let me tell you, he's a hell of a lot better than Legadu Naanee, catch % be damned.7/23/2012 7:26:16 PM |

I watch plenty of football. Murphy isn't on the field that much so its helpful to look at the stats.
When you have the 10th lowest catch percentage in the past 20 years it's not JUST the QB.
The guy just hasn't been good in his career. He couldn't make the Raiders roster for god's sake.
Maybe things will work out, but considering the Panthers had the best rushing attack the NFL has seen in the past 20 years, I think it's worth noting that we might miss Naannee since he was clearly helpful holding downfield blocks. 7/23/2012 8:30:40 PM |

okay so i saw plenty of louis murphy his rookie year, happened to be associated with a raiders fan at the time. He's got speed after the catch with some elusiveness, and he has the potential to break long plays. Dude got ~35 and ~40 catches his first two years, with JaMarcus Russell/CHARLIE FRYE/wet tampon and then at least a competent qb in Jason Campbell.
now that pass catching % is discouraging, but he hasn't had the best QB's throwing him the ball. Can't really explain last season except Hue Jackson is too strong of a hype machine or maybe Murphy shit in Carson Palmer's knee cartilage.
For a 7th round pick, i'll take a 40 pass catcher that still has some upside.

I may be missing something here, but I don't believe anybody has said that he is an amazing GM
it's just that he isn't as god awful as some people think he is and deserves credit for legitimately great draft picks

see the problem is when people say he's making "legitimately great" draft picks about his first rounders like he's popping hall of famers every fucking year out of nowhere
if every draft he did a cam - take a guy when people weren't totally sold on him and he turns into a stud, other examples demarcus ware, freeney, i'm sure many more - then yea, you can start to overlook his flaws
but taking thomas davis at 14, spending 3 years to figure out where to play him then paying him to sit on his ass injured after he has two good years isn't making the franchise significantly better 7/24/2012 1:33:36 PM |
DalesDeadBug In Pressed Silk 2978 Posts user info edit post |
they drafted Thomas Davis specifically to stop Vick...and it worked. He was a safety/linebacker hybrid. Once he settled into playing linebacker he made quite a difference when we played other teams. 7/24/2012 1:43:11 PM |

its a valid point. Anyone can select a good LB, RB, S because those positions aren't very valuable and the good/great ones slide down the board.
That's not to say it's not important to address team needs and make smart picks sometimes, but you don't get an outsized amount of credit for taking a freaking LB that everyone knows will be good.
Being a good drafter means nailing your QB's, DE's, Olinemen, etc.
Overall he's done a good job in the draft, but I wouldn't consider it spectacular because he's got some real boners dragging him down like #33 pick for Armanti Edwards (maybe the worst player on any roster in the NFL?!), Everette Brown, Otah, etc.
We haven't gotten a lot of producers from late rounds either.
But the draft is not where Hurney gets ripped apart. It's the lackluster free agency results and the TERRIBLE results with re-signing our own players like Delhomme and basically the entire Fox regime. Deangelo was a pretty crippling deal too even though I like him and I hope it just goes down as a bad deal and not a total unmitigated disaster (he's 30!!!!) 7/24/2012 3:12:21 PM |

when other GMs make great draft picks in the first round their teams actually end up great because they supplement them with good players in other rounds, free agent signings, not letting their star DE walk for absolutely nothing after paying him 20 million dollars his last year, not massively overpaying anyone on the team who will re-sign, etc
hurney is pretty much all the first round. i'd say his next best quality is shooting about 2% on dumpster dives (which i'd guess is league average) like keydrick vincent and the revolving door at safety under fox.
so he's 8/10 on first rounders 5/10 on free agent signings under $2mil
and 2/10 or lower on everything else
plus he trades away first rounders like candy so you don't even get his one positive every year
