^^ I'll keep you posted.

Working the show was so much fun. I got about $800 worth of free treatments and schwag, plus a $300 titanium, infra-red, salon-quality flat iron for $80. The best part is that Keratin also hired muscley, hot male models to hang out with us. They wore nothing but short shorts and silvery body paint that accentuated their muscles. It was super fun.

So, if you decide to get keratin, I recommend working at a hair show. I'm checking in with the Keratin Complex rep to see when/where the next show will take place. It's worth the travel for a free $500 hair treatment and a fun work experience. I'll share the info when I find out.

Keratin treatments start at about $250 per treatment and cost more for longer hair. For me, it would cost $500 in a salon in Orlando. The treatment lasts 3 to 5 months if you take proper care of your hair. Use sulfate-free shampoo and don't overwash. The treatment takes out a majority of the curl and all of the frizz ... but you can still curl your hair. Regrowth isn't a big issue because the product fades away gradually.

The cost of upkeep for me is approximately $500 every 3 to 5 months ... but you can find bargains (or free modeling opportunities) if you look hard enough.

Honestly, it's really a great product if you struggle with frizz. Being in Florida, the frizz factor is great.

this isn't a shop question, but it is a relationship question...

so I'm moving 8 hours away for two years and Eric probably won't be able to move down even just for the second year (job market is tough, and I understand where he's coming from)

well, I would like to do something that's different and is kind of a fun way for us to stay close to each other... one idea is to write a weekly letter to each other -- communicating strictly through technological means will probably get mundane and a little old

do you ladies have any other ideas? I was also thinking of maybe including a weekly picture.. not just of me (NOT in that way) but maybe of something I see in Bham or something about the dog, etc etc

this might sound corny, but i think it's actually a great idea.

back in middle school, my best friend and i wrote so many notes back and forth, some really juicy ones too - so we just decided to get a spiral-bound notebook to write our notes in. so we started with one of those cheap 100-page spiral-bound notebooks and we'd just pass the notebook whenever we were done writing. it was great, because it kept everything in order, and we could go back and read old stuff. anyways, i think that kind of thing would be great. it likely wouldn't cost much more than $2-$3 to ship it back and forth to each other. you could even take pictures and tape them in there on some of the pages.

perhaps the whole idea of shipping the notebook back and forth doesn't really sound feasible, but honestly i think it's a great way to keep things personal and keep everything in one place so you can both read it.

^2 that's a pretty good idea, and I think USPS has flat rate envelopes and stuff..

^ haha we both already have webcams so I think I have that base covered

but I'm not so sure how much I would want to do that since I'll have a roommate....... might be a little awkward

yeah that's what i was gonna say samwise, there are flat rate envelopes you can get. but even cheaper would be those brown 9x13 envelopes you can buy at the Office Max. the notebook would not weigh much at all, so you can probably avoid the post office entirely. slip the notebook into one of those brown 9x13 envelopes and put a few stamps on it. just go to the post office once and have them weigh it so they can tell you what the postage would be. i'm guessing less than $1 in postage since it's so light.

I think the envelopes you're talking about are $1.80 or something like that automatically due to size.. I only know this because the post man lectured me for only putting two stamps on them continuously

even so, it's still cheap enough to do once every week... I like that idea

my bf has been in hawaii since dec and comes home in sept. we text a lot, send picture texts several times a week (funny stuff, yummy foods, whatever) and we also skpye from time to time.

i know, for me, there is no way in hell my bf would keep up with some notebook and mail it to me. thats just not him. just consider what your guy will actually be able to do. for me and mine, we send a lot of picture texts and for us, it helps us feel a little closer through the distance.

and we also spend a lot of time stalking airfare so we can see each other. so sign up for the alerts between your cities.

and personally, its also helpful to pick up a new hobby or some other interest item to fill the time you would have spent with your sig other

or maybe there's a hobby you can both do in your respective places and then talk about it?!

i like skype/video chat. i've never been super far away for a long period of time from my eric. i was only 1 hour away for the last 3 years so that isn't even long distance really. even though we didn't see each other for 2 weeks at a time sometime, that isn't that bad. but we definitely video chat a lot. and i would show him things video chatting - like if i got new clothes or rearranged my condo or made a good meal haha. you can also video chat/IM while watching a movie "together"

i like the letter/picture idea. there's something super romantic about snail mail letters. but i agree that you (both) could fall behind with that unless you're super dedicated! hobbies are good. texts/emails are good. i know its technological and you want something tangible. i like the sending a photo idea. maybe you could do it like every other week or something.

Care Packages from loved ones rock! Or, you can take some random item that has significant meaning to you and your bf and you can photograph it in new, random places in Alabama.

^^ I found out via facebook, but there are tons of listings on craigslist. To find opportunities on craigslist, use search terms like: expo, convention, trade or spokesmodel

You can make a lot of money (and schwag) by working/modeling at trade shows. They look for spokesmodels/models in all shapes, sizes and ethnic backgrounds.

The best thing to do, IMO, is take a look at the tradeshow calendar: http://www.biztradeshows.com/

Identify local tradeshows that you would be interested in working. Mark the weekends on your calendar. Then be sure to check craigslist a couple of weeks out from the event to look for related spokesmodel opportunities. Bridal shows are great for girls like us because they don't want super young, pin-thin models. And hair shows are great if you're willing to try something new and fun, like keratin or extensions.

There's a bridal show in Houston next month: http://www.biztradeshows.com/trade-events/bridal-extravaganza-show.html

Yeah, we already send picture texts and regular ones via blackberry messenger so I was trying to find something fun... the more I think about it, the more I realize he probably wouldn't keep up with sending a notebook back and forth, and would probably lose it... but a handwritten letter (doesn't have to be long either) every other week or so I think he could keep up with

I think I'm going to take up guitar again to fill my free time.. or get a job

I'd look at gigs or jobs. If you search under "jobs," be sure to search for "spokesmodel."

Honestly, you probably won't find anything helpful (not skeezy) on craigslist until you're much closer in time (a week or two) to a major event.

Joie knows a lot more about this sort of stuff than I do. I just pick up work through friends who work in marketing/pr.

the bridal show starts in 3 days, maybe they just got everything they needed

oh well. man i really want to try this keratin thing! last time i had my hair cut my stylist told me about it and i think its a little less there. i think it starts at $125 then goes up some $ amount per oz. i think she quoted me about $350 to do my hair and its much longer than yours

you should fly to houston to get your keratin and save some $$!

Do you know what type of keratin your stylist uses? If it's formaldehyde-free, I might make the trek.

Another idea I had based on conversations from stylists at yesterday's hair show is that I should just drive to some podunk town to have the treatment. Rural stylists kept saying they couldn't charge as much for the treatment because people where they are won't pay as much.

Also, looks like Keratin Complex will be presenting at a few upcoming events: http://www.keratincomplex.com/upcoming-events.htm

If you happen to be in any of those cities at that time, then I'd recommend contacting the company directly to see about modeling opportunities.

Has anyone ever gone out in Tampa?? I am going there with my bf for the 4th and we are going out one night and all he said is "dressy" but he's unsure as to the classifaction of dressy. I tried asking him if it is more like Glenwood South style or Fayetteville St. area style but he has no clue (because he's a guy). Can anyone offer some insight??

the only colors left are some ugly army green which i'm not getting....

then heather gray which i may consider later...

Promotional modeling is the best. I <3 it- done everything from Party Motivating to dressing up as Poison Ivy at a nerd convention to shining boots for a biker bar to promoting beer for Blue Moon. Hair modeling is a great thing to- you just have to be willing to give up control (the best bet is to get in with a stylist- I got free cut/color/products for three years!)
