LOL @ the Citgo sign. It's a cool picture, it's just that the Citgo sign sticks out like a sore thumb.

^That's an icon of Fenway Pahk, son. It's actually just outside of Fenway at Kenmore Square, but it's still synonymous with Fenway.

I took this last August:

"You'd really be surprised. I guarantee that after a shooting with it a bit, you'll want to shoot with the 300 whenever possible. You won't want to take it off your camera when you don't absolutely have to. When I first started shooting sports I would opt for the 70-200 over the 300 because I thought it was more versatile and easier/safer, but it wasn't long before I realized I got a much higher percantage of "keeper" shots with the 300. Now this isn't totally applicable since you'll also have the 70-200, but don't let the fixed length fool you into thinking you won't absolutely love it.

Plus, changing lenses isn't difficult. The 300 has its own shoulder strap so it is easy enough to twist off and drop to your side or in the bag next to you."

it's not that changing lenses is difficult - it's the conditions in which i'll be changing them

put my reservation in today for the following
Canon 300mm f/4L IS
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS

"i picked up two lenses (both quantaray) and a new N75 film SLR for $70 this afternoon from craigslist:

28-90mm F/3.3-5.6
100-300mm F/4.5-6.7"

was this a decent deal?

i also just picked up a 50mm f/1.8 AF (original, not a "D") for $30

i use a d40 and a d90 (the d90 is work's, but i keep it with me 24/7 and use it for personal shooting...i keep the d40 around because i got a crazy deal on it and it's lighter/smaller than the d90)...i now have:

nikkor DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S
nikkor DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR
quantaray 28-90mm f/3.3-5.6 D
nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AF
quantaray 100-300mm f/4.5-6.7 D

is there any reason to keep the 18-55mm or 28-90mm? i don't care enough to set aside significant amount of money for any lens in particular, but what should my next lens be, assuming i'm looking for value in something i don't already have? or which should i get rid of and what should i replace it with?

^I'm not a Nikon guy but from what I see online, the 18-105mm is pretty much equal to the 18-55 in image quality and it has VR so I'd say to put the 18-55 up for sale. I haven't messed with quantaray in a long long time but I doubt their quality has risen enough for it to be worth keeping either. I'd throw them both up and you'd end up paying for the SLR. Looking at eBay, it looks like you paid about market price for it so the value is going to come from how much you can get for the 28-90 & how much you'll use the 100-300.

I'm having such a hard time trying to figure out whether to go ahead and pick up a Canon 70-200 F4L or some sort of UWA. My biggest issue is figuring out which I will actually use the most. I'm heading out to Reno for a huge car show / event in August with my father and we've decided to rent a car and drive to Vegas so that we can do some sight seeing in between (Death Valley, Mono Lake, Yosemite, maybe Tahoe & a few other places). Obviously an UWA would be nice to have in Death Valley, Mono Lake, & Yosemite but I can't help but wonder about the 70-200 as well. Currently, I don't use much outside of 85mm but my current telephoto is also my really old Vivitar that's far from great. I'll probably end up getting both before I go out anyway but I wanted to get some opinions just in case since I want to get a new every-day lens also. Which would/did you choose?

Howdy all, haven't been on here in a while. Down here in Miami, Florida on my 2nd leg of my internship with a cool photographer. I got to play with the new Broncolor 3200w/s power packs that refresh at uber lighting speeds and cost a cool 10k this past weekend with Bweez (alex) shooting motocross.

Anyhow, I just recently built a new PC and finally felt the urge to do some product shots. I haven't picked up the camera in 3 months; nothing but assisting since I've been down here.

The Setup: And yes, Tequila was involved.

^For the price, you'll probably find that the D3000 really isn't that bad of a camera. It's the camera I shoot with, and for a beginner's camera, I genuinely like it.

^ I on the other hand HATE pictures that stop the prop in the air. The show seemed to be switching between jets and props, and I forgot to change my shutter speed. I realized it when I got home. Some of the pics would have looked better with the prop disc instead of frozen I think.

Quote :

I was using the basic Nikkor 55-200 F/4-5.6 ED II VR lens ( i think I got the type right)

The one of the diamond formation was 200mm, 1/2500 shutter speed, f/7.1, ISO 400

What is?

A few more formation pictures I just put on Flickr

The Delta formation

A 5 plane formation

Interesting pic I'm glad I caught. The 4 planes with gear down were doing a slow speed pass and then seperated, the plane in the center was doing a high speed pass, chased down the formation, and flew through it.

And the last pic, this is the set up of the diamond formation as they were coming around for that first shot

^^ I'd be interested in seeing your normally exposed picture of that. There doesn't appear to be a reason to use HDR for that picture. It looks like it really may only have impacted the trees in the distance.

I think a "better" picture may be a normally exposed version of that picture.

Maybe I missed what you were trying to get with the HDR in that photo?

to be honest there really wasnt. i just got a dslr and i was reading on cool things you could do and that came up, so i tried it (i was focusing on the trees).

here's the normal and the 'after'. not really any different...just experimenting

i really think hdr picture are really cool...if any of yaw have any tips on taking cool ones let me know
gracias

^^Unless I'm fooling around, I've only made one "painterly"/"grunge" HDR... and it wasn't even from my pictures. My HDR's are never really over the top (I've made 5 of my own). See:

I have no problem with people posting HDR's. HDR is very easy to do with an SLR camera due to the image quality. My only issue is there needs to be a purpose to it. The picture above that is mostly dark, but the HDR brings out the limited sunlight and the green in the windmill. That's an excellent HDR. Things like an abnormal sky that would not show up in a normal single exposure, or some detail that is in a dark part of the picture.

Go for it, this thread is for Digital SLR, and HDR is part of it, just use it the correct way!

That being said, a picture can be good/bad to different people... I for one hate pictures where all you see are light blurs, some people love them, whatever floats your boat (analogy to some people liking HDR, some not)

^^ Don't get all defensive now. You posted your pictures for comments/critiques and you actually did get some constructive criticism and most people's thoughts on HDR. If you post an "HDR" image, be ready to talk about HDR, plain and simple. The general consensus in here (and this is an ongoing discussion in this thread) is that HDR is wildly overused, and often used as a disguise for an otherwise low-quality photo. You pretty much prove many people's point posting an otherwise unedited (re: crooked as shit) picture that is "HDR" for no apparent reason 2 days after you buy your SLR.

As has been said, crop your photo and rotate it. Then go from there.
