Personally I'd check compatibility for this app, as it's the only one that doesn't require root and can't be tracked by cell provider, even though it's USB:
http://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether

This one too (no need for root, certain phones):
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.svtechpartners.wifihotspot
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.svtechpartners.wifihotspotdemo (test it first to see if it works)"

Thanks for the post. I tried wifihotspot and it works beautifully on my Galaxy Nexus, and it even has a widget!

May or may not be relevant to people, but I've discovered that I can tether my wifi-only ASUS Transformer to my Droid 2 via Bluetooth and it automatically shares the internet connection, thus I have a tablet with free internet in the airport. Girlfriend works at Verizon and she checked my account and saw nothing about the company getting upset about it.

Anyone thinking of switching to Virizon, Amazon has the Nexus back down to $99 plus Virizon is doing their double data deal again. With ATT&T throttling users granfathered in on the unlimited plan it seemed like a good time to make the switch.

I got an Acer A200 yesterday, man it's great. I was on tap to get an iPad 3 but now I not, but I'll still get the Windows 8 tablet when it comes out, if it impresses me enough, then if not I'll replace my A200 with a better Droid Tab.

M but step their game up with the Apps or I might jump ship... I still have faith in them that they can get a substantial footing and get all the Apps the Driod an iOS has but that remains to be seen...

Damn wtf haha

MS need to step ...

Should make sense now.

So are task killers good for the Android or just let Android handle it.

Also FTW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtYVLniOox8

Fuck the iPad hahaha based on this alone.

pretty much just let android handle it. auto-killing is completely retarded. if you're doing some wonky shit to your phone, task killers gain some use. cm7 lets me kill the open task with an extended press of the back button, which I find useful for getting out of google music when it crashes (and it does a lot on my phone).

Anyone upgraded through amazonwireless? When going through the checkout process, it makes me choose a text messaging plan, however, I already have an unlimited family text plan. The only 2 options are pay per text or $10 for 1000 messages. Amazon told me Verizon could keep me on my current text plan, but Verizon told me that they could not and I would be subject to Amazon's terms. Wtf?

Anyone know of a good app to record phone calls?

Friend of mine is basically being harassed by one of her managers and needs to record one of their phone calls as proof of his actions.

If you use google voice you can enable call recording during the conversation by pressing 4. It will announce that it's happening though and I doubt you can enable it until the connection is made

NC is a one party state so the manager legally does not need to be informed , but if they should check local laws first.

When you go into contacts, hit the menu button and there should be a view/display option where you can select specific groups.

i need to find a battery saving app that doesn't blow

tried easy battery saver (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.easy.battery.saver) and battery defender (https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.infolife.batterysaver) but they both blow in their own ways

the first was okay for the most part, but you can't turn it off with task killing it...it also keeps an annoying icon up at the top and you can't get rid of it...and, the reason i uninstalled it, when the battery got low, it tweaked all my settings (as it's supposed to do), but they wouldn't go back after the battery was charged OR with a reset...so my screen was at the lowest brightness, dimmed after 2 seconds, and was off after something like 5 seconds...PITA to get everything back up to where it's supposed to be on a full battery just to have it fuck up again when the battery is low

the second was better in that i could turn it on and off just fine, but it would take FOREVER to turn data back on...i realize that turning off data is best way to save the battery and it does take a few seconds to re-initialize after turning the screen on, but 30+ seconds is ridiculous

i just want something that allows for sleeping (i don't need or want data on at night, just cell service and texts), and has a "low battery" feature that will disable data (when the screen's off) and reduce the brightness when it gets down to a certain level...when it's not low or sleeping, i just want it to work

any other apps to suggest? there are plenty out there, obviously, but i thought i'd see if y'all are using one that works well for you

DroidX2 question:

anybody know of a tethering app that allows for infrastructure wireless tethering (ie, not ad-hoc)?

i think PDANet can do it via USB connection, but the Touchpad doesn't have a USB port so its a no-go for this particular application...figured I could post this in the Touchpad thread also, but if some of you have X2's maybe you already know an easy way to do this?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate. I have to reboot this damn phone just about once a day. I have GPS disabled to help conserve batteries. Seldom do I use the GPS feature for driving directions, but I do use it from time to time. I always have to restart the phone after enabling GPS because if I don't, it'll sit there trying to find a satelite, but will never connect. As soon as I reboot, presto! I've got a solid connection like it was nothing. wtf. Sometimes the phone also says the camera has failed, or browsing through my gallery it'll "lock up" and I'll have to restart the phone to go browse some more again. Closing gallery via task manager and clearing memory do not resolve this issue after previewing the gallery is stuck. So damn glitchy. Most I do with the phone is take pictures, check my emails, listen to pandora, and play a few games such as words with friends and hangs with friends.

^^^Like you want to use Touchpad + another device from your X2 on the go? I think I used wifitether with my dd-wrt router (Cradlepoint routers can do it to) to provide infrastructure by using wifi as the WAN.

its a friend of mine (Wireless Tether on my D2Global works fine with my Touchpad for the same application), he wants to basically be able to turn on tethering on his X2 and be able to use his wifi only Touchpad on the bus to work in the morning...a lot of the XDA threads i've seen with similar issues imply that all the tether apps for the X2 use ad-hoc and not infrastructure, and that works fine with laptops with most Windows OS's but not the Touchpad

seems the 2 issues are not having a USB port on the touchpad (for wired tethering), and that the CM9 build doesn't show up when you connect it to a computer via USB if you wanted to be able to modify the wireless files in order to change it from ad-hoc to AP

speaking of which, is there a such thing as a microUSB to microUSB cable that would allow you to connect an android to a touchpad?

i think he might just be SOL based on his phone, but i never realized the X2 was like that, though I did hear when it came out that it didn't have "all of the features" of the first DroidX

my shitty D2G works just fine still on Froyo with z4root and Wireless Tether, and the few I upgraded to GB using different root methods and tether apps still worked fine for the same type application

maybe one of the later CM9 builds will do a better job of installing drivers to allow USB access

in any case, it's not always convenient to do so...i mean, why NOT save battery when it's feasible?
