I'm picking mine up next Thursday. I'm sure they'll be in stores before July 14th. I'm simply saying it's silly to get a 3gs right when the 4 came out. Plus that comic doesn't apply to iPhones. I bought my 3gs for $200. I'm selling it to my mom's friend for like $250-300 because she doesn't have an upgrade and wants an iPhone but doesn't want to pay $$$. I could get more on ebay if i unlocked/jailbroke it.

Now i'm buying the iPhone 4 with that money and profiting.

So every year a new iPhone comes out you sell it on ebay/etc and profit. So in actuality you're making money from AT&T every time a new iPhone comes out.

How is that losing money? You make money.

You just screwed yourself by getting an old iPhone because now it's going to be worth even less in a year when you could have waited a few weeks spent $50 more and gotten an iPhone 4 that would have been worth a lot more in a year and made you money when you upgraded to the iPhone 5. It's basic economics.

But in regard to the iPad that comic is correct. It's not subsidized. So you can't make money every time you get the new one.

don't be ignorant, you are in no way "making" money from AT&T, you are just recouping a very small portion of what you pay (read: LOSS) over the year. and they just make you sign another contract keeping you a customer.

Like i said in my earlier posts I'll enjoy my 3GS NOW, while you "lololmyiphone4iscominglolol" on TWW.

I'm not riding up to ATT everyday hoping to get a pre-order on something that's not going to be here ti'll july. Even if they got some in july I would still have to wait until all the current pre-orders were filled.

Huh? That makes no sense at all. Replace AT&T with any other provider. They charge the same as Verizon.

And it's not a small portion. Plenty of people make hundreds off iPhones they resell on ebay. I'm not talking about the contract. I'm talking about not having to pay the subsidized price each year but actually making money back. And in regard to a contract with AT&T I don't see your point. Why is it a negative thing for me to have a contract with AT&T? I live in an area where i never get dropped calls, the data is fast, and i rarely ever have a problem with the service. I don't mind being locked into a contract.

Yeah I'm actually with Neodata here.

I have one subsidized iphone and one unlocked iphone both on AT&T. They have exactly the same rates. So I don't get the point of buying a non-contract phone unless you plan on leaving the carrier soon (which for all the iphone4 guys, isnt going to happen).

It's not like AT&T gives you a discounted rate for non-contract iphones, so I fail to see how they are really being subsidized? It's not really any cheaper to move to tmobile, and their service is actually even worse than AT&T in many areas, if you can believe that.

it's 720p, it's the lowest resolution that qualifies as "HD", lol. the things that you should notice is compression and framerate. to me it looks like the frame rate is indeed low which means any movement will be blurry, and not sure about compression since YouTube likely recodes the original video. they really should just post the original video file for any good comparison, i expect it's better.

^probably. Although my mom has a Nikon d3s with 720p video and the iphone 4 video looks better. Plus the iPhone will focus in real time. Some of the DSLR's can't. I'm sure apple did it right. I have no doubt it'll be the best 720p video on a phone for the time being.

The only jailbreak anyone should be using right now is spirit. It's the latest one, it works with all devices including the iPad and the 3GS/ipt3 with the latest bootrom, it's a one click solution(just like blackra1n) and it gives you an untethered jailbreak.

so i just got back from the apple store... i was at crabtree anyway to pick up some stuff and thought i'd stop by just to check and see if they still had my reservation

i got a peek at their support console... 368 people have reservations for the 32 GB one and 432 have reservations for the 16GB. dude confirmed they're gonna have 2 lines like they did for the ipad, and that the only thing the reservation gives you is priority over the people that don't have one... it's still first come, first served.

i placed my order at like 1-2pm on the first preorder day through at&t.

(it says date ordered: 6/16/10 instead of 6/15/10 when I really ordered it)

i wonder if they had to go back and manually enter my order or something because of their server fuck ups.

guess i won't get on the 24th?

(though i just looked, and it looks like they are holding the charge on my credit card now. so maybe it will come. who knows, their systems are so crappy.)

I am not going to start nitpicking about compression and framerate, it's a cellphone. I don't plan on making a feature film with it, if it captures decent video of a friend getting iced on a friday night it has more than done its job.

Although if you want to get technical about the frame rate it shoots 720p at 30fps although the sensor is capable of 720p at up to 60fps so maybe they'll make some other frame rate options available in a software update further down the road

an untethered jb is definitely desirable, though I can also say I've only once had a situation where I had to tether to re-jb and wasn't at my computer to do so. Except for installing Winterboard the other day, I haven't had to re-jb to install any other apps, either.

Of course, it would be preferable to not need to tether, ever.

Good luck, guys ... looks like Apple and AT&T are reneging on quite a handful of pre-orders. Although the latest update to the story has a supposed AT&T rep stating that the cancelled orders were actually cancelled duplicate orders ... this should be fun to watch.

^^^^As you've already admitted once in this thread, you're confusing jailbreaking with unlocking. They're two completely separate processes. Blackra1n isn't an unlocking process either. Like I already said, spirit is THE ONLY jailbreak that anyone should be using right now. Any and every iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch user that's interested in jailbreaking should be using spirit, no questions about it. There's literally no reason to use anything else for a jailbreak. I don't know how you'd go from a tethered jailbreak to an untethered because that's not something I've ever done. You might have to put on 3.1.2 legit first and then rejailbreak with spirit, or you might be able to go with spirit straight off. I'm sure googling would help you out with that. Googling will also help you with a solution to unlocking too, but as I said before your method of jailbreaking has nothing to do with unlocking. All unlocking processes should work on all jailbroken phones, regardless of how they were jailbroken. I read they just updated ultrasn0w a couple of days ago with the 4.0 baseband, so it should be able to handle anything you're running.

I know that jailbreaking and unlocking are different, and I don't think I'm confusing them now. I just don't know enough beyond that to know what unlocking software to install, etc. When I jailbroke with blackra1n, it conveniently also immediately gave me the option to unlock the phone, too. While I admit being quite ignorant about actual unlocking software, I do know that they are different processes.

I've already googled and know enough to know that before I can run spirit, I have to restore my iPhone.

I would be willing to be at least some of those are canceled for the exact reason Apple provided, the authorization wouldn't go through. You would not believe how many people have no idea what their credit limits are, or try to use someone else's card, enter the wrong information or have a lousy credit history and thus fail the credit check for the phone.

People will try and buy these things and plans using those pre-paid credit cards (you know, the ones you get because even the credit card companies don't want to deal with you) and they don't understand why it doesn't work
