I don't understand - its like Lowe knows what the problem is but he can't get the players to understand it on a consistent basis and actually do it. Its like there is a breakdown in the communication on what they are suppose to be doing.

I just don't think there are many people he can matchup with as a 2 or 3 in the ACC. I mean realistically....i'd prefer he not be on the court on the defensive end"

i agree that davis is an upgrade defensively and i love his energy, but he is a non-factor on the other end. if there are other scorer on the court, davis makes sense. williams is only mildly better on d and is even more non-existent than davis, at least davis crashes boards (i'm honestly flummoxed by cj's regression this year...). mays...well, mays theoretically has quickness and, as you say, SHOULD be a HUGE upgrade at the 2 on D. but he consistently gets blown by, caught out of position, plus he is a human turnover and his hands are the black hole where our O goes to die.

to summarize: mays sucks

I almost wonder what the difference would be next season in letting Javi player-coach the team. Any time I think I see progress with Lowe he does something stupid enough to completely negate it. Did we really need Painter to show up tonight and shoot a 16 footer? Why do we see a lineup with 2 of Davis/Williams/Vandenberg on the floor EVER, much less every game? Will our defense ever have a ceiling higher than below average?

Vandenburg is a good defensive player, but he needs to be locked in a gym for a week and learn how to shoot

he doesnt even need to do that. we need to teach him one back to the basket move. or, failing that, just tell him to turn and try to dunk it every time he gets the ball. if nothing else, he could pick up fouls that way

I think we could increase Vandenberg's confidence by getting a "BIG DANDY VANDY!" chant going.

I think what bothers me most is that we never seem to play a full game. It's just one good half in the majority of our games against decent competition. This game was a perfect example. Solid 1st half performance, terrible second half. Same story with Maryland the previous game. We just aren't putting it all together.

IMO next year is it. Barring a miracle we will not make the tourney this year, putting him at 0/4. If he goes 0/5 on NCAA tournament births that's gotta be a wrap considering we had made the tourney the previous 5 years prior to Lowe taking over. After this season everyone in the program will be someone he brought in. No excuses for us not to be as good as we were with the the previous coach.

While Herb was never going to be the coach to get us back to the point where we could contend for the final 4 occasionally he at least got us back into the tournament on a consistent basis. Don't get me wrong, I don't miss him and we did need to look for the coach to get us to the next level up, it seems very likely at this point that Lowe was not the answer.

If Sid can't put us in the tourney after 5 years he needs to go.

fyi, being tall is not the same as being a good defensive player. vandenberg plants himself in hte lane and occasionally gets a block whne somebody drives at him. but the guy has no mobility and no strength and is def not a good d player, at least not yet.

I'd say he has the potential to be a great defensive player. He already makes pretty much everyone alter their shot. And he's quick...compared to your average 7'1" white guy that is. Unfortunately, he also fouls like crazy with the constant swats and hand check shit.

Vandenberg needs to be locked in the gym and not let out until he puts on about 30 pounds of muscle, learns how to shoot the ball from 6 ft. and in, and learns at least 2 post moves.

Defensively he's not a liability or anything, but right now he's a swatter, which means he'll never play more than 20 minutes a game before fouling out. If he can unlearn that bad habit he could be a presence in the paint on the defensive end.

Vandenberg is a decent defensive player for a freshman. He still gets caught out of position and picks up fouls, and he needs to put on weight, but he's not bad

^He's a helluva lot better then most expected he'd be at this point considering that:

A) He's a freshman
B) He's getting used to playing a more physical brand of basketball
C) He still needs to put on another 30 lbs or so to fill out his frame

I expected him to sit this year while learning the game and getting bigger. Hell I was just hoping he'd eventually make some contribution to the team down the road. I think that it's safe to say that Vandenberg will make a far bigger impact at State than anyone outside of the coaching staff initially expected.

IMO, this years's team has exceeded my expectations. For a team w/ not a lot of raw talent, and even less experience, they've played some good ball and put up some good fights. Yeah, we've had some shitty droughts, and a few poor games, but i'm happy with this team.

Just for comparsion, for those who think Sid is uncreditable, consider that Roy Williams the Great has much more talent on his team, yet they're arguably a worse basketball team than us this year, at least so far. Well, except that they beat us at home. But otherwise.

So is Roy Williams uncreditable as a college coach?

He still beat our ass....all his "talent" is based on recruiting rankings which is what most of you go by instead of watching the games. I still maintain that our team should have beat them. I don't see how you could argue that. After we beat Duke, the talent excuse should have went away. Obviously we are good enough to beat the best team so we should be able to hang with anyone.

our talent is still worse than UNC's by a good measure but I don't think the gap is going to be any closer than it is this year. we're pumped for harrow/brown but they get 3 of those guys every year. some of them suck, but most don't. that loss was terrible and one of the most discouraging games all year. not just that they beat us at home, but that they housed us by fourteen. awful

^^Oh ok good comeback. You know many of you want Lowe around because of his recruiting skills and then at the same time say our team lacks talent. So which way is it exactly?

And are you seriously questioning the coach with the highest active winning percentage's ability to coach? Roy has 2 titles. Lowe has 2 big wins. No comparison. Stop with it already. If Roy is so bad, then why did our team get beat badly by his team? Pretty stupid to even mention it.

packboozie, do you think this team would be playing better if roy was our coach?

b/c right now we're playing better than them. yes, i know they beat us, but that happens. they had one of their better games of the season, and we had one of our worst. but you can't argue (although i know you will) that if you compare the talent of the scholarhip players, they're much deeper than us. and yet we're doing better. how? why? please tell me packboozie, b-ball guru who is such a huuuuuuuuge fan.

EDIT:

And I'm not blaming anybody. I said I think the team is playing better than I expected this year.

"Playing better" is a nebulous and fleeting term. UNC is positioned much better to make the tournament if they were to turn things around (fwiw I think neither team does. We'll finish something like 5-11 and theyll go something like 6-10). Roy Williams is undeniably a poor game coach but I think what's lost when people make fun of him is that he has a very solid system. The way his teams push the tempo is typically good for at least one 10-2 run every game that will put it out of reach if the teams are playing evenly. Now that isn't happening this year because Larry Drew sucks ass but it's worked about 20 more years than whatever Sidney Lowe's system is

If 13-8 is better than expected, what the hell were you expecting? I feel like we were on a good trajectory to outperform expectations until ACC play hit, and now were looking at a team that is 2-5 in conference and has lost its last 2 games to bubble teams by a combined 40 points. That's about as bad as I thought we'd be

[Edited on February 1, 2010 at 5:23 PM. Reason : we're 14-8 now but the nccu game really shouldnt count]

The better question is... what were you expecting? I mean, we were picked last in the ACC and I think most believed we would be at or around there. I figured we would drop a game to one of the cupcakes early, we didn't. We barely got beat by florida and lost to arizona without tracy. We beat a good marquette team on the road and we whipped duke's ass. Beyond that, we have been in every single game save the UNC game till the end. We have played tough D for the most part and at times our offense has looked downright stellar.

If you expected all that, then you are one optimistic guy.

I've never professes any love for lowe. Putting words in mouth, yet again. you ain't worth arguing with. But just to clarify, when I say "playing better", I'm not referring to wins and losses. I've enjoyed watching this team, they're fun to watch (sometimes). I've had more fun watching this team then i have any State team in the last few years. Sure, we've still had some very frustrating droughts, but when play well, we play very well (see Duke game, or FSU game....).

thats nonsense.

they lose possibly their best 3 players

davis
thompson
ginyard

we lose two of our worst players

degand
horner

they gain a bit more than we do (ratings wise) but they don't replace the frontline that they lose. the ware brothers will be their frontcourt. we lose our worst two starters and replace them with players that will be instantly better.

drew/strickland/marshall
bullock/mcdonald
barnes/graves
henson
ware/ware

vs

harrow/javi
brown/mays
wood/davis
howell/cothron
smith/vandenberg

we will be a more experienced team next year. they get even younger. I don't see how you could think they'll be better. even if harrow or brown is a bust, we look much better at 2 or 3 positions.

+1

I don't know how good a coach Sidney Lowe will eventually be.

I do know that Roy Williams has the highest winning % of any active coach in the sport and has won two national titles with completely different teams in the last five seasons.

People really need to just stop being retarded fools and calling him a shitty coach in order to... you know what? I don't even know what the point of being that stupid is, to be honest.

Great programs sometimes have bad years. Especially because those great programs typically lose players early at a far greater rate than shitty programs.

This years Tar Heels team just isn't as talented as past years. Getting talent is 2/3's of coaching at the college level IMO. You can't say "good recruiter, bad coach." They are synonymous with each other at this level of basketball.

ginyard - LOL no

degand has been an underrated help to the team this year. it sucks that we have to play 2 guys at once to get what most people get from 1 pg but still.

I didnt expect us to be any good this year but I hoped that the team would get better as the year went on. As I said, things were going fine until recently. I thought we could finish somewhere from 8th-10th in the ACC instead of 10-12th. Right now we're tied for last

We haven't lost to the likes of COfC, our overall record is better, and we've kept more of our losses closer. We've played clem, uva, and wake closer. And we stomped duke. We lost to Arizona by 2, w/o Tracy. And we lost to Florida on a mircale shot. If we'd won those two games, I wonder if people would still be bitching?

Whatever guys, you can't bring me down, i'm still excited about NEXT YEAR!!!!!!11

I'm pretty sure only the certifiably insane would be calling in to question the credibility of the current defending National Championship coach...

And really comparing anything Lowe has ever done in his life as a head coach to Roy Williams is being unfair to him AND Lowe.
