that should be your clue to stop listening. CJL can't even sign his LOI until April 14th and I doubt he would commit anywhere before the burger game.
I would hope, given this is the ACC tournament and all, the staff is devoting most, if not all, their time preparing for the next game.3/12/2010 4:27:11 PM |

even if its only 1 season and he goes to the nba next year, it would still be great to have him. We would be unstopable. its always fun to pipe dream.
is lowe just going to settle with painter and vandenburg as our centers?
we really need a good 6'10+ player. 3/14/2010 12:15:23 PM |

if the bulls won championships with bill cartwright im sure we can make do with painter/vandenburg as long as we surround him with the likes of harrow, brown, wood, leslie and smith 3/14/2010 12:48:40 PM |

They'll be juniors by the time they look at starting time and they both will be good. I think Painter will be a solid player by the time he graduates. 3/14/2010 1:07:35 PM |

Ncaa rules state a player has to sit a year if he transfers. I believe interconference acc transfer rules are 2 years. Both of those can be waived in special circumstances. Neither would be waived here. Also the team can pick schools that the player cannot be released to.

When smith first came to state he was a huge hole on defense. Last year he got a lot better but was still below average on defense. Right now he's a slightly above average defender. At 6'7 or 6'8 or whatever he is listed at he can hold his own on defense and rebounding against anyone in the acc.

you don't want a 6'7 guy that your offense is centered around being the last line of defense against the goal, even if hes a decent defender.
Anyway you cut it you're going to have to risk either
A. giving up easy baskets inside or B. getting him in foul trouble
for us its often been both.

well smith isn't a terrible rebounder. but he's not that good. everyone who averages more rebounds than him per game average less minutes played per game.

Or because Horner is no where to be found down low and it's Smith vs. 2 bigs on another team.

the question isn't if smith is capable.
the question is do we want smith put into the most foul-prone position on defense? At that height, you can't possibly play against good post players without picking up a few fouls per half. 3/14/2010 5:00:58 PM |

He did it all this year... Only a couple of games in serious foul trouble and we have multiple players who can come in and back him up. Are you really stupid enough to think he would play better at PF? He doesn't have any form of an outside game and would get destroyed by quicker players dribbling past him... 3/14/2010 7:18:55 PM |

smith is an average rebounder. he gets the numbers because he's the only guy we have down low when horner is in the game and even then, his numbers arent that great. he also has a tendency to stack orebs by missing his own shots, though he cut down on that this year
next year w/ howell starting will make up for any of his deficiencies though 3/14/2010 7:30:09 PM |

Smith is a great rebounder for his size...he has great hands and he is very good at his 2nd jump...a lot of guys can soar for rebounds, but Smith is good at jumping up again immediately after coming down from a previous jump...if he was 3 inches taller he'd be unstoppable 3/14/2010 7:33:49 PM |

PF should have an outside game in the college game and should also be able to guard and play on the perimeter. Trevor booker was an excellent example of a PF. 3/14/2010 8:08:25 PM |

I want my 4 more like Hickson than Horner

You want your 5 to be like smith on offense except maybe taller ideally, but smith plays several inches taller than he is. You want your 4 to be able to bang and shoot a mid range jumper if he needs to 3/14/2010 9:05:43 PM |
adder All American 3901 Posts user info edit post |
^^ Hickson also played center for us. When Smith and Mccauley would play together Mccauley would convert to a PF that is why you saw him taking more outside shots for us and guarding more on the perimeter. This was done in spite of Mccauley being the taller player (listed at 6'10" I think) Your PF should have some form of a dribble drive and be able to defend someone on the perimeter that is why Booker is the prime example. If you have both your PF and C camped out down low there is absolutely NO room for a guard to penetrate. You want to keep as many defenders as possible away from the lane because then they aren't immediately able to help on D.

Quote : | "he was 2nd in the conference in fg %." |
well first, i said he didnt do it as much this year. in fact, he was probably not any more of outlier there than any other big man...but it happened last year for sure, and his fg% was higher then
i also dont buy this stat. what is the min attempts cut off? Favors was around 60% all year (he finished at .614...tracy at .534) but they were saying Tracy was #1 deep into conference play
corey raji (who sucks) finished at .543 and lawal who is the most overrated player in the conference finished at .533. zoubek was .621, xavier gibson .559. Obviously Smith is more impressive than all those guys because he was our #1, 2 and 4 options but its not like he was lapping the field here or anything3/14/2010 10:15:46 PM |

You can move your posts around and work the high-low game. Do you think San Antonio was shy about putting Duncan and Robinson on the games together? Obviously passing, screening, offensive awareness, and a 12-15 foot jump shot are good tools to create offensive space and flow.
In the college game watch Kansas use Aldrich and the Morris twins. The twins have decent range on the jump shot but are clearly post players. 3/14/2010 10:16:02 PM |
