Photographers Thomas Pöcksteiner and Peter Jablonowski traveled several times around the country in different seasons to capture different aspects of landscapes and cityscapes" |

Quote : | "You know that scene in Terminator 2 when the T-1000 emerges from a shallow pool of metallic liquid? It’s a classic. It’s also what inspired researchers at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University to rethink the mechanics of 3-D printing.
Instead of printing objects by stacking thin layers on top of one another—a process that can take days, depending on what you’re printing—they built a device that produces a complete object from a pool of goop." |

The coolest thing about that map is how it incorporates foliage overlap to depict the amount of influence/overlap languages share. This gives a unique, multi dimensional perspective on language families that normal plot diagrams fail to depict.
For instance, although English is technically a West Germanic language, there was a huge amount of influence from the French language during the old days such that English ended up overlapping with the Romance languages in terms of vocabulary and grammar quite heavily, as is indicated in the pictogram.
The second is how Swiss German, Bavarian German and High German are shown as completely separate, non-overlapping sub units. This is interesting because these three languages are not mutually intelligible to other speakers of the group, but are still consider all to be different variations of German. Then, you have the Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish branches that are completely shown as overlapping in the picture, which indicates that they are mutually intelligible but different languages. Anybody that is from Scandinavia will tell you the same thing: all three off these languages can be mutually understood by each member of the subgroup, but they are somehow still consider separate languages whereas Swiss German, Bavarian and High German are not. 3/30/2015 6:32:05 AM |
