I'm finally on the Android bandwagon! Was able to upgrade while staying on a SERO plan so I've gone from a 3 year old Windows Mobile 6.5 phone (HTC Touch Pro 2) to a Motorola Photon running Android 2.3. Very happy with it so far. 4/25/2012 1:32:53 AM |

give what a few months?
Android is great. I've given it a couple years and I absolutely love it.
Now, I wouldn't touch a Photon on 2.3, though some people making the switch from dumb to smartphones likely won't care/know the difference (for now).

^^Educate me on why this was a poor choice please. I went with it based on a few hours of research as I finally got fed up with the bugginess of my old phone and found out I could keep sero somewhat out of the blue. Not coming from a "dumb" phone but from a 3 year old winmo 6.5 device.

Well, it's a different phone than I thought it was Maybe it was a good one on Sprint; though, it seems like the photon was just one of those phones that was just pushed into stores (as opposed to popular/power devices such as the Droid/2/3/4/x/Razr/Maxxxx/Bionic or Galaxy Nexus). Maybe I just didn't hear about it since it's Sprint. I normally follow up on the top tier VZW releases, late enough for the phone to still be relatively new, but lower in price. 4/25/2012 10:52:04 AM |

A few months for the absolute shithole that is Android 2.3 to start rearing its ugly head.
And no, I'm not saying Android is bad. But from personal experience of a year of using an Evo 4G and multiple Android tablets, I can tell you that Android 2.2 and 2.3 will make you absolutely hate the platform. My fiancee finally refused to use the Evo anymore and demanded to go back to an iPhone.
All these new 4.0 phones are much, much better. At least they're more reliable and capable. 4/25/2012 11:49:59 AM |

As far as the phone itself, the Photon is basically Sprint's version of the Atrix 4G, but with a better camera and 2.3 vs. 2.2. I still think it was the best choice for me--they have a grand total of one phone running ICS, the Galaxy Nexus, and while it *technically* offers 4G LTE Sprint hasn't established LTE coverage in many markets yet, this one included, so the 4G would be useless. 4G Wimax may be on the way out but at least it exists and I'll be off contract well before it dies in 2015. The Photon seems to compare favorably to most of their other offerings (Evo 3D, Design, Epic 4G), with the only strong competition seeming to come from the Galaxy SII. While the Galaxy may be a better phone overall, it would have cost me $200 and I got the Photon for $50 thanks to a trade-in deal. The Galaxy is not $150 worth of nicer. There is a new model of the Evo coming in May, but it will likely be LTE and will likely be $200.
Android 2.2 is buggy as hell on my fiancee's Optimus V, I'll give you that. But with sprint only offering one model with 4.0 it's not like I had a whole lot of choice. Was going to stay with Sprint (cheap unlimited data on SERO), didn't want an iPhone, and their Windows Phone 7 selection sucks plus I don't really dig the tiles interface. 4/25/2012 1:02:13 PM |

Honestly ICS is worth to $150...to me at least. Especially combined with the whole getting a newer/more capable phone.
Plus aren't the Tegra based phones coming out soon?4/25/2012 1:27:18 PM |
richthofen All American 15758 Posts user info edit post |
Photon is supposed to be on the list for ICS in Q3 of this year. And while the Galaxy Nexus is indeed newer and more capable, who the hell knows when Sprint will roll out LTE in smaller markets like ours. Not anytime soon, likely. (The Galaxy I was referring to not being $150 nicer was the S II, not the Nexus, btw. It's been around for about as long as the Photon and has very similar specs save for a slightly nicer and larger screen)
If you're talking about the quad-core Tegra 3, that currently does not support LTE and that will not be resolved until late this year, if not 2013. HTC One XL switched to a dual-core Snapdragon in the North American market due to that problem.

The quandary you just went through is the same reason I am probably going to be leaving Sprint when my contract expires.
Unless you're an iPhone user, the rest of their phone selection is terrible. They have a few decent flagship models (Nexus, iPhone), but everything else is just so awful it's sad (my HTC Arrive included. Love the OS, the phone is garbage). 4/25/2012 6:06:03 PM |

ugh my battery life is shit now.
the "media" process constantly keeps the phone awake and using data. I know when it's happening because the phone will get HOT in my pocket. and if I don't kill the running process AND the cached process it will drain the battery in under 8 hours.
suggestions?

I've had one since the day it came out and don't really have a problem with it and don't think I charge it anymore than my roommate has charged any of the 4 or so android phones he's had. Sometimes I go a couple of days without having to charge it, sometimes I have to charge within 24hrs. I'm at 30% right now and at 1day, 8hrs, and 44 minutes on this charge. -- I usually charge at night while I sleep, or at my desk while I work. With wall chargers, car charges, and usb chargers all available, how hard is it to keep a phone charged even if it does have a short battery life.
That being said, I usually keep the GPS off unless I'm actually using it (i had it on most of the day yesterday -- although, I was only using the nav. system for a little bit). It's the tap of a button on a widget, so no big deal there. I also keep the 4g radio off unless i'm actually using it (I wish I could turn that on and off with a single button). Turning those two things off go a long way in battery life (and turn down the brightness of the screen). And honestly, I rarely turn the 4g radio on. You can only watch a video as fast as it plays. 3g is plenty fast enough for a video to start playing almost immediately and download well ahead of where it's at in the video. So the end-user experience isn't really different. I do use it if I'm using netflix on my phone, or know I'm going to download something large. But again, that's rare.

Ran into another issue with my Nexus this weekend. Apparently the phone will try to send MMS texts over wi-fi if wi-fi is enabled and connected. Was trying to send a picture and it just sat at "sending" for more than 3 hours. Deleted the message and tried again, but this time I watched it an noticed the data indicators for wi-fi were activated, not the indicators for 4g (I had 2-3 bars). Found some posts on the verizon forum and it seems that several other people were seeing the problem. Turned wi-fi off and the two test pictures I sent went through without any issue. Anyone else run into this and have a more permanent solution than turning off wi-fi whenever I want to sent a picture? The posts I found before just seemed to stop there, though some people seemed to not have the issue after having the sim card replaced. 4/30/2012 10:19:54 AM |

Oddly enough, I have good 4G signal both at home and at work. Maybe I'm just lucky though.
4.85" does sound rather large. I'm quite happy with the 4.3" on my Photon, anything larger seems like it would be unnecessarily bulky in a pocket. Hell, the absurdly huge display on the Galaxy Note is only 5.3". 5/4/2012 12:06:10 AM |
