I'm really sick of recruiting. I just wish CJL would commit and Brown would officially qualify so the speculation would quit. 3/16/2010 2:05:38 AM |

i honestly dont even care if cothran comes. the only thing the i have gained by watching his recruiting stuff, is the fact that he is like costner. and if he is like costner. we do not need him here at state 3/16/2010 2:09:14 AM |

Word is Cothron is going to Bama and CJL is going to recommit to NCSU.
Cothron would likely have to sit behind either CJL or Howell and the only reason he originally wanted to come was because he thought he was going to get major minutes.
Good luck Luke 3/16/2010 3:37:48 AM |

i'd take cjl over cothron, but i was hoping we could keep both. can't argue with a 3 5* class though.

yeah i'd like to take cjl and cothron. leslie will likely be gone after a year, and we're losing tracy after next season as well. if cothron came in here and produced he could have potentially been a starter from year 2 on. 3/16/2010 4:40:45 AM |

I really hop Cothron sticks with us. His freshman year we have Smith backed up by Painter or Vandy at the 5, Howell and Cothron at the 4/5, possibly CJL at the 3/4. Smith is a senior and CJL could be one and done, which would really open up minutes in the post.
He's not going to find a better situation at a high major program, but he should be able to take his OVs if he wants to. 3/16/2010 7:09:42 AM |

If he is like Costner and plays with heart then I would want him here. Costner had good skills, he just stopped caring/was lazy. I dunno why people are bashing Crothon, if he wants to be here then I welcome him with open arms. 3/16/2010 7:54:29 AM |

the only reason people are saying they don't want cothron is because he isn't truely committed to state. if he had the attitude of harrow when it come to the wolfpack you would all be heralding him as the greatest power forward to ever exist.

If what I am reading is correct, Crothon wanted guaranteed playing time, and he's been shopping his name around to other schools. I'll be shocked if he recommits to us. 3/16/2010 8:25:52 AM |

^^that statement is stupid. you're exactly right if he had the attitude of ryan harrow we would want him here. but he doesn't, and so frankly, i don't mind at all that he's not coming.
attitude is a huge part of college bball success. if you have a bad attitude you will underperform and hurt your team (ie costner). if you have a good attitude you will maximize your talent for the benefit of the team (ie hodge).

Part of this has to be jealousy of the attention CJ is getting. He is a great player in his own right. Cothron says he wants to start as a freshman. That will probably not happen at NC State (with or without Leslie). That will not happen at Alabama. If he wants to play at a mid-major CUSA school, he can probably start as a freshman but noone will care.
Keep the door open, guys, because Cothron may well survey his options and decide he wants to play in a big-time basketball atmosphere and come home to the Pack. 3/16/2010 8:31:51 AM |

I see this situation (as I have seen it for quite a while) as if CJL is coming to State then Cothron more than likely will not.. it has nothing to do with positions, playing time, ect... it has all to do with the fact that for some reason these guys really do not like each other. 3/16/2010 8:37:37 AM |

His own coach did call him lazy on defense....
This is a side effect of having 3 forwards in last years class.
If CJ commits to us then no big deal. If CJ doesnt commit, we will need a good forward next year to prevent a hole in future teams. 3/16/2010 8:43:31 AM |

most high-schoolers are. especially ones who avg 20-30+ pts a game. and i think his coach was trying to motiviate him. coaches do that sometimes.
EDIT: but this is pretty suspect. he knows horner is leaving right? so he'll get PT, but probably behind Howell. Does he expect to be a starter right away?
Best to keep in mind he's a kid, trying to make a decision that will have an impact on the rest of his life.
Just for fun, how many 4*s coming out of HS have been 1&dones?

Have you followed his recruitment at all? Every insider swore up and down he'd be here last year, and at the last moment he went to prep school.
With NC State, you can't assume anything. Until he gets his qualifying score, I think it's a legitimate concern. I've seen this kind of thing happen to us before (Schea Cotton). 3/16/2010 9:45:39 AM |

If I am not mistaken, raising his grades at hargrave can make what was an unacceptable act score into an acceptable one ... isn't that correct.

We dodged a bullet with this one guys...
Cothron's coach openly blasted him this morning to the PP recruiting gurus. To make things worse, when PP tried to call him this morning he (Luke) picked up his phone but said he was someone else and that Luke wouldn't have his phone until sometime later because he was borrowing it for the time being
Not to mention the reported dislike between him and CJL...

Quote : | "But after watching Cothron sleepwalk through a 64-61 loss to Apex in the third-place game of the Glaxo tournament on Wednesday, the fact that he is not locked into a commitment right now might not be a bad thing for the Wolfpack.
State coach Sidney Lowe talks all the time about playing hard and “playing the right way.” So perhaps it was fitting – maybe symbolic even – that Lowe wasn’t in attendance Wednesday as Cothron slogged through an effort in which he totaled 15 points on 4-for-18 shooting before fouling out.
Worse than Cothron’s production was his effort and body language. In a performance Cougars coach Derrick Bond labeled as “disinterested” and “lackadaisical,” Cothron certainly didn’t seem to be an energizing force or a big-time playmaker, usually prerequisites for a player rated so highly.
“He played in spurts,” Bond said. “And you can’t do that. … If you don’t want to play, if you don’t want to give effort, if you don’t want to have energy, don’t check in. Just sit over by me.”
One of the biggest holes in Cothron’s game right now appears to be his long-range shooting – he was 0-for-4 from 3-point range against Apex. Even worse, Bond says, has been Cothron’s lack of purpose on defense.
“I’m hiding him,” Bond said. “I’m having him defend the other team’s worst player. Not because I want to but because I have to. Every big-time stud (in high school basketball) guards the other team’s best player in crunch time. I have to hide him. And you can’t do that. He’s too skilled, too talented and his upside is too tremendous to be hiding him.”
All that considered, perhaps the best case-scenario for State right now would be for the Wolfpack to secure a commitment from Leslie then have Cothron opt to take his game elsewhere.
Knowing Lowe’s intolerance for lackadaisical play and Cothron’s occasional lapses in effort, it’s easy to envision a situation where the talented big man would find himself cemented to the State bench for long stretches then grow increasingly disinterested due to his diminished role." |
