Too bad this next class won't have many openings. I bet the recruits will be breaking down the door to the Murphy Center to wear wolfpack red when we beat Syracuse. 2/5/2014 6:09:15 PM |

something i didn't consider until reading about it in some article that i forget the premise of: doeren was just hired, which means that a recruit can feel reasonably comfortable that he'll be there the entire 4/5 years he is playing. you really only get that kind of security without winning big your first year or two... so i'm glad he's taking advantage of it. 2/5/2014 6:18:46 PM |

Yeah, I think TOB's best recruiting class came after his first season too. The security thing goes a long way, but we've got to win a little next year or the recruiting pitch will get old quick.
The good news about not winning any conference games is the bar is set VERY low. So if we win, say 3 ACC games this year, we can always tell recruits we're moving in the right direction. We've increased winning by 300% 2/5/2014 9:14:04 PM |

I have absolutely no facts or stats to back this up...but it seems to me that most programs (or at least most BCS programs) see a bump in a coach's first full recruiting class. I'd maybe attribute that to a new coach coming in with more motivation on the recruiting trail and a more aggressive approach in his first season or two.
Like I said...I'm not going to look up stats or ranking to back that argument up. I just generally get that sense from new coaches recruiting classes.2/6/2014 3:42:43 PM |

Obviously at this point Doeren can just tell recruits that last season was a fluke and due to TOB's bad recruiting, etc. And he can still point to his success at NIU and Jordan Lynch as selling points. As a couple years pass, this won't be the case and he'll have to actually sell the job he's doing at State. 2/6/2014 3:54:31 PM |

^^TOB's first full class was ranked as high if not higher than DD's class. We finished #29 in Scouts rankings in 2008 for TOB's first class. We finished 26th this year. The difference is that in 2008 we only signed 25 guys, this year we signed 31. Also, TOB brought in 5 4*'s with 2 in the Top 100. DD brought in 3 4*'s with 0 in the Top 100.

Doeren can just tell recruits that he coaches for NC State, where Super Bowl Legend Russell Wilson went to school. And if they mention Wisconsin, he can point out that he used to coach there. Then mention that they can take fake classes that never show up and get free luxury cars and guns and weed, and we'll have our own Michael Jordan pipeline. 2/6/2014 4:37:17 PM |

But look at all those stars team captains!
Lolz, naw, but seriously. Those pretty infographics on jet black poster paper are not only meaningless, they're also unimpressive. There's serious cause for concern with the state of this program. 4/1/2014 4:05:57 PM |

That last part of graphic seems pretty misleading...
Quote : | "Players ranked nationally at their position by ESPN, SCOUT OR RIVALS" |
Quote : | "27 OUT OF TOP 100" |
So we, as one school, got over 25% of the Top 100 2014 football recruits. Sweet.
I'm thinking the denominator needs to be a lot bigger than 100.4/1/2014 4:05:59 PM |

^ not to mention those numbers repeat. So the 3 players ranked in the top 10 are also included in the 27 in the top 100 category as well.
Which should be obvious....but those bar graphs are meant to impress..

^^^^ that makes it a little better, but shouldn't the denominator still be bigger? Surely those three services didn't come up with the same 100 players for each position ranking...and casting the net a little wider, it really it should be 27/(total # of players in top 100 of all positions), ya know, if honesty mattered.

It's saying that if you look at the top100 lists for each position on each of the recruiting services, we have 27 guys that appear on those lists.
(if you look at the top10 lists for each position, we have 3 guys that appear on at least one of the recuriting services list.)

They're promoting a sports team. It's pretty common in sports, really.
should they produce posters that say: "Hey, we may suck this season, but we can't do much worse than last year!" 4/1/2014 4:35:58 PM |
JesusHChrist All American 4458 Posts user info edit post |
Of course not. But if that poster is supposed to help me forget last season and somehow instil optimism for the future...well......
The knock on Doeren is that he can't win a conference game. The excuse that his supporters trot out is, "hey, wait for his recruits!"
His recruiting class isn't that impressive, if we're being honest. And the fact that we have to brag about"team captains" and players with high school playoff experience is evidence that we're stretching to find things to hang out hats on. 4/1/2014 4:45:21 PM |
