yeah, believe they're having a $100 off deal on Motorola phones. The $50 was probably a NE2 credit which Verizon has gotten rid of so that won't be available next time.

And what are the chances that Verizon makes the tiered data change before release.

any video player apps you all would recommend?

looking for another excuse to keep my Touchpad on the Android side more often than WebOS, but TouchPlayer will player pretty much any video format, and the stock ICS video player won't play a lot of them

some of those issues might be related to the specific ICS port and video incapabilities on the Touchpad, but maybe there is a player that will handle different formats better

^ nothing major. many small updates, tweaks. faster screen rotation from portrait to landscape (always annoyed me), better camera performance.

so I've decided I'm gonna stick it out with sprint and I have 24 days.until my upgrade (which is good since I spiderwebbed my screen yesterday )

my question- should i go for the evo 4g lte or the samsung galaxy s III which comes out in 2 weeks? i have the orignal galaxy S, and it isnt realy standing the test of time, but i imagine not much will with these stupid 2 year deals nowadays...

what say you, android gurus?

Doubt you can go wrong with either. Same processor and similar sized screens. Evo has a slightly better screen and is more visible in the sun. SIII has double the memory so hopefully that'll help future proof it slightly but given Samsung's update track record, who knows. You also can't get an extended or spare battery on the Evo 4G LTE since the battery isn't removable. Verizon doesn't have a One series variant yet, so I'm going with the SIII for one last upgrade prior to Verizon ditching unlimited.

Yep. Had issues with the first and now my third. Second was great til the screen crapped. I'll be in RTP, full 4G signal and just lose everything..3G, 4G, service. It'll come back and go away in five minutes. Did this repeatedly Tuesday morning.

are batteries ever covered under the 1-year warranty that comes with most phones? i ask because if not (or even if they are for only the first year), you're kind of screwed if you can't replace the battery and it craps out (which seems more likely than just a random catastrophic failure)

For me, I'd take the Samsung. Primarily because it has a removable battery, but also because of the 2GB of RAM vs 1GB.

i'm guessing I have some type of glitch going on, but maybe someone else knows the answer right off (looked through last two pages of thread to see if it was posted)

just updated to 4.0.4 on galaxy nexus and my battery life shows 100% all the time.

Is this a glitch in 4.0.4 or specific to just my phone?

My guess is that it's some code that identifies which text should be clickable for more actions and which text shouldn't?

Ugh I hate the patent system for giving out these patents.

anyone have/use an all-in-one ATM finder/locator app?

something that lets you select a type of ATM (specifically, i need allpoint and visa/plus networks)...allpoint has a "real" app, but i can't find one for visa/plus...thought there might be something like an all-in-one app that uses the GPS to show me the closest ATM that matches what i can use fee-free

http://www.bgr.com/2012/06/08/samsung-apple-lte-patent-suit-analysis/

Quote :
"The word on the street is that Apple could file for a temporary restraining order against the Samsung Galaxy S III on Friday. Naturally, Samsung probably wouldn’t be too happy with that, which has led FOSS Patents’ Florian Mueller to speculate that Samsung will try to enact revenge by filing similar complaints against Apple whenever it comes out with its newest iPhone. But if Samsung is really hell-bent on going after Apple, why is it waiting around for the iPhone 5 to come out? One answer may lie in the strength of Samsung’s patent portfolio.

If, as is expected, the next iPhone has LTE connectivity then it could play directly into Samsung’s hands. iRunway, a research firm that specializes in analyzing companies’ tech patent portfolios, released a study earlier this year showing that Samsung and Qualcomm were far and away the dominant players in the LTE patent space.

How dominant? Consider that Samsung holds nearly 10% of all LTE-related patents and just over 12% of what iRunway dubs “seminal patents” — that is, patents that are most likely to be used in suit. iRunway used a wide variety of metrics to determine what constitutes a seminal patent, including a patent’s age, its infringement detectability, and the number of instances that the patented technology is used by other firms. Any way you cut it, though, Samsung holds the most cards in the realm of LTE intellectual property.

“All of the companies making handsets will want to stay away from Samsung,” iRunway chief solutioning officer Animesh Kumar told me earlier this year. “Samsung can get aggressive and start hitting all these guys.”

iRunway also said that Apple has “minimal patents in the LTE domain,” which means Apple could be particularly vulnerable to patent suits if Samsung decides to break out the big guns. At any rate, it’s very likely that the smartphone patent wars will continue for a very long time to come despite recent half-hearted efforts to lay issues to rest."

ha we can only hope. Fuck Apple.

Today is the day... hopefully... ICS!

Got app dev questions:

I have a Droid Razr Maxx on 2.3.6. I downloaded Weather Underground's app; however, the radar loop will not play. I contacted them and they referenced some animations setting, which I could never find/never found a reference to. Additionally, other animations/radar loops/etc. outside of this app work. Their response is that they can't do anything about it since they don't have this device.

1) Anyone heard of a web animation setting? I know of the window animations setting, which is enabled and I can't see how that would be tied to this app. WU referenced a browser setting... which I couldn't find, nor do I know why the browser setting affect an app.

2) Can't they use an emulator to test their app on any device for free?

Not sure if they're going to have other options or not. You start with the base plan with the data pool you want which includes unlimited minutes and texting. So if you wanted 10GB, it'd be $100. Then you can add up to 10 devices to use that plan. 2 smartphones and 2 basic phones would be $80+$60=$140 so that's $240 before taxes/fees/insurance/etc

Quote :
"Step 1 Step 2
Monthly Line Access
(per device)

Shared Minutes
Smartphones - $40
Basic Phones - $30
Jetpacks/USBs/ Notebooks/Netbooks - $20
Tablets - $10

1 GB $50
2 GB $60
4 GB $70
6 GB $80
8 GB $90
10 GB $100"

ha, current legacy alltel plan is about $260 with 2 smartphones (1 unlimited, 1 2GB), 2 basic phones and Mifi with unlimited data. Converted 10GB plan would be ~$300 before taxes/fees.

holy shit...my legacy alltel plan with just one smartphone and my wife's dumbphone is right around $105 per month after taxes and fees and is:

1200 anytime minutes (shared)
1000 text/picture/video (per phone)
10 family/circle/whatever numbers (shared, but gives us free calling to these numbers)
unlimited nights/weekends minutes
unlimited data (my phone only)

we use 200-300 anytime minutes per month (we don't have a home phone) and around 150-200 texts between us...i use 1-2GB per month in data (more whenever i go to the beach or travel and turn it into a 4G wifi hotspot)

so if i wanted a 2GB plan and my wife continued having a dumbphone, that'd be $60 + $40 + $30 = $130/month before taxes and fees...so about $140/month after? that's independent of the $30 one-time "fuck you for upgrading" fee if i (or she) wanted a new phone, too

fucking verizon...i still have a year left on my contract (though 9-10 months before i'm eligible for a renewal)...i suppose i'll be shopping around for another carrier at that point (or hoping republic wireless is up and running)
