lol. now they're trying to say it's an iOS4 problem since it occurs on the 3G too.

Well holy shit
I just did that twice to my 3GS.
Bars go all the way down over several seconds and then when I put it back on the desk they pop back up.
edit:
By go down I mean all the way down to no bars and then drops in to edge.

I've done this 5 times in a row. The 3GS has a metal band around the front face but I didn't think the antenna used it. 6/24/2010 4:26:26 PM |

I just can't fathom what part of the OS they could tie to whether or not the phone is held that could cause this issue. Proximity sensor would be my only guess.

Things worked out for me with the lines today ...
I waited in line this morning til 830, and got a ticket ...
Then I left and returned around 3, hopped in the short reserved line, and got both my reserved iPhone and a non reserved one.
AND ... the people who had been right in front of me in line were STILL in line when I returned ... only finished 10 minutes before I did ... they were there from 4:45am til 4:00pm ... That is crazy ... especially in that heat.
My extra one sold on ebay for 1175, to a guy in California... not sure why that fool bought it, but hey ... works for me. 6/24/2010 5:08:58 PM |

I just had a 10 minute conversation with my hand covering the bottom left, I kept checking and I was at zero bars and the call didn't drop. Doesn't really prove anything one way or the other, but I'm glad the call didn't drop. 6/24/2010 7:32:33 PM |

I was out of town and couldn't get to the mall until about 6:30. Total clusterfuck. They would have to have a turnover time of about 2-3 minutes per person to have any hope of getting through the line of people with reservations before the mall closed. Fuck me for assuming a reservation meant I'd actually be able to get one. Blerg. I might go back early in the morning, but I haven't decided yet. I'm pretty pissed. 6/24/2010 7:32:58 PM |

Regardless of issues I'm hopeful that iPhone 4 has a better signal when held the right way...
per http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/25/technology/25apple.html?src=busln
"Even Brian Lam, Gizmodo’s editorial director, saw an upside to the iPhone 4, antenna problems and all.
“We are paying attention to the antenna issue because it could be a big deal,” he said. But Mr. Lam said that for years, he had not been able to use his older iPhones to make calls from his apartment. That changed on Thursday, after he bought an iPhone 4. “I have made three hours of calls today,” he said."
[Edited on June 24, 2010 at 9:08 PM. Reason : perhaps the 3G/3GS cases used on the iPhone 4 prototypes prevented the engineers from seeing this...] 6/24/2010 9:03:34 PM |

Anybody found any decent games that take advantage of the gyroscope? I downloaded Eliminate: Gun Range, but it wasn't really anything super special. I'm surprised they didn't have a free tech demo or something for the gyro just to show off it's capabilities in some way. 6/24/2010 9:09:52 PM |

On antennas and cell phones:
http://www.antennasys.com/antennasys-blog/2010/6/24/apple-iphone-4-antennas.html
A bit apologetic, but good information none the less. Unless I'm misunderstanding his point though, even if FCC test don't require you to actually hold the phone, it seems awful sloppy of a company who prides themselves on every last detail to not test that. 6/25/2010 12:42:44 AM |

For those of you who insist on continuing to own flawed electronics, allegedly the iPhone 4 fits in docks made for the original iPhone.
So you can save yourself a couple of bucks on that and put it towards a bumper instead. 6/25/2010 8:48:56 AM |

Confirmed with my 3GS. Never noticed it because I use a case, but I just took it out.
Ive been messing around. it has nothing to do with the metal band on the 3Gs. If my hand covers the back of the phone like it does when making a phone call, the bars dissapear.
If i picked it up by the metal band and keep my hand from covering the rear of the phone, nothing happens; I stay at full bars.6/25/2010 9:18:43 AM |

As much as I hate the antenna problem i was planning on getting a case anyway. I'm sad I'm going to cover up the nice metal band but I'll probably be getting a bumper after work today. I've dropped by 3gs before and the only thing that saved it was a case that covered the sides which I think the bumper case will do. 6/25/2010 9:20:03 AM |

only downside to the bumper that i've seen so far is that they made the opening for the dock connector the EXACT size of the one on the included USB sync cable... so, of course, no other accessory's dock connector fits 6/25/2010 10:15:19 AM |
