just seems to me that things like goldfish and kfc would be snatched off the hook fairly easily

i don't know about fried chicken. i've caught catfish on old hotdogs my mom was gonna throw out. i've also caught them on chicken livers, but those don't stay on the hook well. goldfish stay on pretty good if you hook them properly.

naw, but we used to have a cat that would eat whole fish heads when we were cleaning them

i've seen a dog eat a fish too, but never just gut it. he ate the thing whole.

Next time I give my dog a fish I'll take a video of him eating it and show you. It's crazy...he bites off the head and throws it aside, then he takes out the innards and throws them aside, then he basically fillets it and eats the meat....it's amazing.

tidal waters of the neuse where it meets the pamlico sound are pretty much just as clean/dirty as tidal waters anywhere. not really a big deal.

im PRETTY sure the neuse river is like the worst because of all the hog farms

i got out in some shallow waters there and it was like 92 degrees and all these dead fish started floating to the top. i saw their sores...then i had to wash my feet in bleach

caught in the neuse at goldsboro and baked by my granny. delicious:

it's a rockfish. they do not remain in the neuse all year. they migrate up in there to spawn. i have caught a few fish from the neuse with sores, but never a rockfish. i'll eat other fish from the neuse that aren't migratory. various panfish, bass, etc. if i do catch one with sores, i throw it back. i don't eat catfish from the neuse or any body of water just because they're not worth the trouble of skinning and all that for the fairly low quality meat to me.

the neuse river where it meets the sound and becomes brackish is a totally different story. i eat a lot of fish from down there. these are primarily saltwater species that must have some level of salinity higher than that found up-river in places like kinston and goldsboro to survive. speckled trout, flounder, and puppy drum, mainly. i eat all of these and they are great. examples:

although i feel that my actions on the neuse put me at fairly low risk for pfiesteria (i don't swim in it, net in it, crab in it, or let my skin come in contact with the water that much), one day i might get pfiesteria and go batshit crazy. i don't really care. totally worth it to me.

will you get pfiesteria if you work (netting, crabbing, etc.) in the waters of the neuse? maybe. probably not a good idea to ski, tube, wakeboard, swim, etc. in it either.

the fact is the first thing that comes to mine when people hear "neuse" is "OMG PFIESTERIA FISH KILLS HOG SHIT NASTY NASTY NASTY" and i think that's sad. the neuse is a beautiful tributary and the fishermen, duck hunters, and paddlers of this state know it. everyone else is missing out.

[Edited on August 16, 2009 at 11:29 PM. Reason : i don't know anything about the neuse around raleigh (or above wayne county, for that matter)]

so hog farms cause all of the pollution in the neuse?

what is the black river's problem? it flows near a lot more hog farms

Quote :
"In recognition of the fact that the Black River is one of the cleanest, high-quality waterways in North Carolina, the state designated the river an Outstanding Resource Water in 1994. The river is home to rare fish species such as the Santee chub and broadtail madtom and numerous rare mussels like the Cape Fear spike. Many wildlife species inhabit the river’s floodplain, including bobcat, river otter, black bear, and neotropical songbirds like the prothonotary warbler and yellow-throated vireo."

http://www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/northcarolina/preserves/art5589.html

i think the scapegoat you're looking for is the fact that Raleigh, smithfield, goldsboro and kinston all release their treated wastewater into the neuse.

^i think your question is better asked in another thread. not in my repertoire.

^^i've given up arguing about the reason the neuse is dirty and/or catches a bad rap. quite frankly, i don't care what folks think of it. i want them to stay out of the neuse anyway.

i've always had this problem

every time i went for physicals when i was younger, no one ever seemed to think it was a huge deal. i drink and drink and drink water...all that happens is i pee a lot.

it's just worse this week, maybe because of the intense heat, who knows.
