6.5 games ahead could this actually happen? 7/21/2010 3:51:13 AM |
rflong All American 11472 Posts user info edit post |
I'm wondering if the Phillies will be able to pull off a trade and get Oswalt. If that happens, it would make the division that much tougher. The East would then have a collection of guys like Halladay, Santana, Hudson, Josh Johnson, Strasburg, Oswalt, Jurrjens, Pelfrey, etc. Starts to add up to a lot of parity within the division.
Hopefully it won't happen, but if it does, I hope the price is very high and the Phillies sacrifice the future. I am tired of the Phillies being good. It is time for them to go back in the shitter where they belong.

ugh no...
I am pretty happy with our outfield now. Yeah I wish Cabrera was playing a little better, but Diaz is starting to heat up. I wonder if that thumb was bothering him more than he let on at the beginning of the season.
We have a lot of top pitching prospects but ATL needs to keep them for now. 7/21/2010 9:38:13 AM |
rflong All American 11472 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah I wouldn't mind getting a bat of Werth's quality in the OF, but the Braves really need a CF and someone who can play some defense and still hit a little bit. DeJesus would be a good fit. I do not want them trading any young pitching though, but you can't have it both ways. I think they'll make a move possibly trading a guy like Medlen or Minor for an OF bat.
I wonder though if Werth leaves Philly how well he'll do. I give Charlie Manuel a lot of credit for making Werth into a legit power hitter. 7/21/2010 9:47:23 AM |

We do not need to give up Medlin right now. I rather have him than KK as our 5th pitcher. 7/21/2010 9:51:29 AM |
rflong All American 11472 Posts user info edit post |
^ Some outlets are saying that the Braves may shop Medlen around. I agree that he needs to stay our #5 and KK can rot in the pen for all I care. The thing is the Braves are trying hard to win this year and Medlen will not be needed for the playoffs if they make it.
It is risk to trade him for a bat, but you have to weigh which guy will impact the pennant race more. Certainly a good bat will be more valuable in the playoffs than Medlen as a long relief guy. 7/21/2010 10:21:52 AM |

You have a point there but what about next year? KK would be our 5th starter again. I haven't heard of any of our young pitchers that are going to be ML ready next year. 7/21/2010 1:35:27 PM |

^They're saying Mike Minor has excelled at every level he's been at in the minors, so there's a possibility he might be ready to be a fifth starter next season.
I am completely happy with this team right now, although I think there might be a need to go out and get a solid outfielder to complement everyone else, especially if nate mclouth continues to struggle when he's activated. But diaz has been raking so far since he's come back and we all know heyward will do his thing, so it's not completely necessary to trade for a veteran outfielder who will cost prospects, especially considering we're now 6.5 games up and the mets and phillies are both struggling 7/21/2010 1:44:21 PM |
Ernie All American 45943 Posts user info edit post |
I'd like Medlen to stick around, but he's our most expendable piece right now. We've got about a week to see how well McClouth bounces back (spoiler alert: not well). Blanco has played well, but I doubt his ability to hit lefties. If he could hit at .280/.380/shitty SLG, I could live with that, especially if McClouth turns it around and they can platoon -- even though McClouth can't hit LHP either. Minor and a few other guys should be ready for the #5 spot next year, so there's a good chance Medlen is dealt in the offseason anyway. It would be nice if Diaz could continue to rake -- apparently that splinter was there for a year+, so maybe that was the problem all along.
Wren is definitely going to be looking for a left-handed OF, but I wouldn't be surprised if nothing comes of it. Either way, I think we're set up well to push into the playoffs. 7/21/2010 3:15:11 PM |

Damn I had to stop watching the game last night in the bottom of the 7th, but I was like "If Saito doesn't blow, we got this".
Gotta give the Padres credit for getting clutch hits and manufacturing runs to win that game. Seriously how the hell are the Padres the best team (record wise) in the NL? They basically have one good hitter and a bunch of no name pitchers. Bud Black for Manager of the Year.
Thankfully the Mess and Philly lost too. Hopefully we'll win the series this afternoon. 7/22/2010 8:45:59 AM |

Wow what a win tonight. The Braves bench players Hinske (yeah I know he started tonight) and Conrad with the two big hits tonight. The Braves bench has been flat amazing this year with Infante, Ross, Conrad, Hinske, and even Blanco. Too bad MclOUTh came back. Dude sucks beyond belief.
I honestly think Conrad might deserve a chance to take Chipper's spot if he retires after this season. That is crazy. 7/25/2010 1:54:21 AM |

Brooks Conrad should never be a starter. The reason he gets any hits at all is because pitchers don't care, or don't know how to pitch him. It's like throwing fastballs to a pitcher, yeah you could try a little harder and make sure they got out, but why put in the extra effort when they're probably gonna get out anyways.
We have an all-star 3B on our bench, just let Infante start until we can develop a prospect or trade for somebody 7/25/2010 12:08:31 PM |

There's no way Nate McClouth is a member of this team on August 1. Trade him for anything and eat the salary, just give someone else the spot on the active roster.

we have to make a trade for an OF.. There's no way Wren can think we are fine with a black hole (McLouth) in center or a utility player at best (Blanco) in CF. Hell, at this point I'm for starting Infante or Conrad in Center.
Bad thing is, there isn't much out there...
By the way, who thought acquiring Jesse Chavez was a good idea.. get the fuck off the team, every time you come in its a minimum of 1 run.. loved todays performance.. 4 batters 0 outs.. send him to DSL. 7/25/2010 4:43:19 PM |

Braves sucked ass yesterday. Four times with the base loaded and less than two outs = 1 run. WTF? MclOUTh needs to rot on the bench. He has no idea what the fuck he is doing right now. There really is not a great option to trade for so I guess Bobby will just have to keep running through Cabrera/McLouth in CF and hope for the best.
Phillies are starting to hit again so the Braves are going to need to win these games against the lesser teams. Get to face Strasburg again this week 7/26/2010 9:22:21 AM |

it was said Wren was waiting to see if McLouth could be the solution, if anything, yesterday pretty much sealed the deal that he ain't. This really forces the team's hand for Ross, Willingham or Hart 7/26/2010 11:26:50 AM |

McClouth's season is unbelievably horrible
He's batting .168 in 220 PA. The last Brave to bat at or below .168 with at least 220 PA was... no one. No Brave has ever had a season this bad. Only four batters since WWII have had seasons that bad, the last was Bob Hamelin in 95. I know he's terrible, but fuck man.
[Edited on July 26, 2010 at 4:38 PM. Reason : Hudson is batting .261] 7/26/2010 4:36:25 PM |

^^ Hart would be risky as he may be hurt and the Brewers could be hiding it. I think the Marlins are going to try and stay in the race and so Ross is probably off the board too. Willingham is okay, but would make a horrible CF.
Honestly the Braves might as well just stay put and keep the young arms. If it doesn't work out, at least you did not mortgage the future like they did in the Tex trade.
