I will not miss Scott Wood nearly as much as most of you.
He should have been a 6th man his whole career. Poor defense and too one-dimensional on offense 3/22/2013 10:46:51 PM |

Wood's spectacular shooting will be missed but I really wish that he developed some semblance of a dribble drive or a mid range post up game of some sort. Just running around screens all day is something that teams figured out how to defend after while. He still had nights when he was unstoppable, but when you're that specialized, you can be neutralized.
That being said, I appreciate all that he contributed to this team over the years. He was a steady, calming force on this team and his 3 point stroke was a thing of beauty to see when he was on. 3/23/2013 8:12:47 AM |

i'll miss Wood's 3 pt stroke. However, like most...you would expect a player to develop SOMETHING else while in college for 4 years. He never really showed anything except the ability to come off of a screen and hit a 3 pointer 3/23/2013 8:14:38 AM |

Unless Turner turns out to be a gunner or one of current guys improves dramatically next year...we're going to shed tears for Wood next year.
The guy didn't need to add anything to his game. We have low post scorers, we have assist guys, and we have guys that can drive to the basket. In Scott Wood, we had a guy who had to be accounted for every second he was in the game...and when he wasn't, he made you pay. Yeah, he missed an open three every now and then...but not often. Remember when he was out yesterday and Temple went into the zone and we looked retarded? Just him being in the game prevents that. He's a gamechanger...plain and simple.
His defense? Much better than you faggots are giving him credit for...especially when compared to the rest of this team. He at least was fundamentally sound in defense and knew where to be. Sometimes he got beat by someone who was stronger and faster...but it wasn't for lack of effort. There was a reason he was sometimes assigned to an opponents best scorer...and it wasn't because he was the only one left.
His shooting is so beautiful its fucking artistic. 3/23/2013 10:36:07 AM |

well said brick. the irrationality of some our fans is mind-numbing. leads the wolfpack in 3 pointers, probably in 3 point percentage, and games started. but yeah, he sucks, good riddense!! 3/23/2013 10:44:35 AM |

He was blanketed for the majority of the night except for the ball that was blocked right to him in the first half and he missed that open three.
Then he makes two threes and we're back in the game...and not wide open ones either. We basically get a free basket when he makes multiple threes like that. We don't have ANYONE on our team that can do that unless they are wide the fuck open...and it's not a guarantee even then.
He didn't have the best game yesterday, but we don't even sniff getting back into that one without him. And it's not like he would have prevented us from being down 18 at the half...the whole team blew in that first half with maybe the exception of Leslie. 3/23/2013 10:53:04 AM |

One of the most efficient players in the country, one of the best shooters in acc history, and a fairly solid defender . Couldn't rebound for shit or create for others directly but his shooting/spacing helped create offense indirectly.
A relatively consistent FOUR year starter.
Other than howell and tracy smith hes probably the best player nc state has had since Cedric simmons. We could debate lorenzo brown I guess.

wood > tracy smith
mainly because while both had great offensive games for their position, wood actually did things other than score.
tracy smith didn't rebound and couldn't defend the post at all. he was great at scoring in the low post, but wasn't really good at anything else.3/23/2013 3:06:35 PM |

Tracy smith was a good rebounder/defender his senior year before his injury. He sucked after it though lost his athleticism.
He was a fat ass his first three years and couldn't guard anyone but he carried us singlehandedly offensively for fwo years as a soph and junior when we didn't have any other acc talent on our roster 3/23/2013 3:36:16 PM |

tracy smith was a terrible defensive rebounder. His senior year he only averaged 3.3 DRPG. Scott "terrible rebounding wing" Wood averaged 2.6. Wood was also a better shot blocker. Please try and tell me again that Tracy Smith was ever good at defense, I need a laugh.
If he was even an adequate defender he would have been drafted to the NBA. 3/23/2013 3:55:59 PM |

Tracy couldnt defend but Scott cant either.
Both were good enough offensively to get away with it. They needed some role players to pick up the slack for them and neither of them were on teams with one, unless you count last year with CJ Williams. 3/23/2013 4:04:05 PM |

I can deal with one of our best FT shooters ever missing the front end of a 1-and-1...it happens 5-10% of the time for him
but i just didn't get him being so stagnant on offense during the first half...as if he was saving his legs to play against the main university of his home state in the next game? there isn't any next game if you don't win this one
i don't care how tired you are, you need to run around more and try to get open enough for your lightning quick release
i knew if/when he made his first 3, he would get the adrenaline flowing and be able to run better and make more 3's...just didn't understand his offense during the first half
though in fairness, the whole team had issues the first half, but still, it was possibly (and ended up being) his last college game ever, i wanted more movement and effort
----
i appreciated his career, i told my friend who i was watching the game with who was sharing these same sentiments that he had other games earlier this year where he didn't show up early, but hit a few late 3's and helped us to the win
but i was not a fan of him in the first half when we really needed him

i've been saying this all season. He is a tremendous 3pt talent and miss be sorely missed for that. But that really sums up his offensive game.
Way too one dimensional trying to roll off a pick for a three 95% of the time. Always thought he could shake things up by breaking towards the basket and forcing them to defend either a layup/dish or quick 8ft jumper.3/24/2013 12:59:52 PM |

^It just never was his game. He actually tried to break towards the basketball and make some counter moves earlier in the season. Most of the time, he either turned it over or dribbled into no-man's land. I think the last 15 games or so, he just said fuck it ... I'm a 3pt shooter, I'm gonna bomb 3's. 3/24/2013 2:47:24 PM |

Do you guys not even watch the game? He moves all the fucking time. Also, every trip down the court isn't designed to get Scott the ball...and he'd be dead at the 10 minute mark if he sprinted all over the court trying to get open every play. 3/24/2013 3:09:31 PM |

^Exactly. Everyone bitching about Scott not running off a million screens in the first half need to remember they probably weren't running offense specifically for him. They were just running the motion. In the second half when he got hot, they started setting stuff up specifically for him. 3/24/2013 3:18:02 PM |

ftfy....Scott gets a lot more open looks in the 2nd half when defense get complacent and/or tired. They get comfortable thinking they have him covered...they give him an extra inch or think they can go under a screen...and BOOM...UVA in the 2nd half of the ACC tourney happens...and the two threes in a row against Temple.
I'll repeat for the millionth time...we're going to miss him IMMENSELY.3/24/2013 7:37:23 PM |

Scott was the final guest on the last Mark Gottfried show. Fun interview. Even if he does nothing as a pro, he's got a future as a coach IMO.
-Someone asked him what he looks at when he shoot. "I honestly don't look at anything. I just shoot."
-Someone asked him if he's helped other players on their FTs. He said when CJ was at the line late in the season, he started patting him on the back for good luck. (And said it usually worked).
-Someone asked about his greatest memory at State. He said the selection show announcement last year without a doubt.
There were a hundred other things he talked about that were interesting, but those things stood out. Really praised Gott and staff for turning the culture around at State, and said he wouldn't trade his four years here for anything. Cliche to say, but he seemed very genuine. Gonna miss this guy a lot. 3/26/2013 11:57:36 AM |
