The what not to do on the left is unfortunately what way too many shorts look like for us bigger guys. I'm 6'3" with a 36" waist and have the worst time finding shorts that don't look like that. When I do find shorts that fit, I tend to just go ahead and buy multiple pairs of them. Bonobo's have been my go-to lately for shorts and pants.

Bought a pair of cargo shorts at REI this weekend because I can't figure out how to secure things while riding roller coasters (as you know TWW, this is very important to me). That is the only time I will wear them, though. Well, maybe while bicycling too.

the sweet spot might look okay if every single person wearing the shorts was a 28" waist like the model. most people in those shorts think that's how they look when in reality they look like humpty dumpty.


also, if you want a pair of Gant shorts prepare to spend $80-$100. Shorts are seasonal, i'll buy some that are decent quality, affordable, and fit well. I only need them to get me through the warmest of days. I have absolutely zero need to spend that kind of money on something I wear with such infrequency. That being said, i do not wear cargo shorts

Target has some Merona "tailored" chino shorts in twill and cotton, mid-rise, flat-front, nothing fancy, for $19 a pop. So yeah, you don't have to drop $100 on Vineyard Vines just to escape some goddamn cargo shorts. BE FREEEEEEEE.

^^ are the Merona tailored shorter than the regular ones? I have some regular merona shorts I grabbed without trying on because they were on clearance for $4, but they are too long. the ones i have rest at the knee and rest on the back of your leg.

i found some Tommy Hilfiger shorts last year at Marshalls. Flat front, twill, nice length. No obnoxious TH branding on them anywhere. The fit great and were inexpensive.

no one is asking anyone to be uncomfortable or start wearing your dad's tommy bahama left overs. but if you're still wearing a thick canvas belt to hold up your faded camo cargos and topped with a "Beer Chugger's Rugby" t-shirt you need to look in the mirror.


but i think it's a generational thing...most people stop caring about image, labels, current styles when they leave high school or college. Most of the people in question wearing the cargos quit caring about these things when that type of style was still "in". so to them it was the last style they saw in a major social setting like a college campus.

in 10 years we will probably have an epidemic of new 30 somethings still wearing their college days skinny jeans that are now way too small because that was the last thing they wore to be in style before shifting into the next stage in life.

some us grew up in places were cargo shorts or abercrombie/AE/Aeropostale was never in style. nothing about regular shorts or preppy styles is particularly trendy, its basically been the same for the last 50 years. some of us look pretty much the same in high school and college that our dads did.

dtownral yes, the tailored chinos are shorter. You're absolutely right, the regular twill merona shorts are ridiculously long. I have a pair I never wear because of it. The tailored ones might just be a different cut/style, because they also offer a smaller size range than the regulars (which go up to like 46).

I did look basically like one of those people, the guy in the lacoste polo with the beard, which is also pretty much what my dad looked like in college. his shorts weren't in frame, but i guarantee they weren't cargo shorts.
