Yeah. I am glad I will be getting out of this Bible belt state.

Probably to a smaller, more Bible-hugging town ... but still. At least it will be different I guess.

Maybe next primary they can add another amendment to ban pornography like Rick Santorum wanted to do.

I too am disappointed in the policies the government keeps initiating.

Fortunately, I won't suffer directly from this policy. My friends will though and that makes me angry.

I'm pretty sure this is going to be voted in. I voted against it, in fact, one of the few reasons I went to vote in a primary is to vote against it. I hope I'm wrong.

One of my friends agrees in the seperation of state and church. However, he voted for the amendment. When I asked why, he replied, "Because it's my duty as a Christian to support my beliefs. It's in the Bible. Anything else is considered a sin."

Far more progressive states have similar amendments. I just can't stand this shit, though. Amendments are NOT intended to restrict the rights of a certain class of people who otherwise harm no one and nothing else... so ridiculous.

Considering that only a very small percentage of the state's overall voting population will be the reason that passed, rwoody, I'm pretty sure I meant minority. You go back and check again for me though. Let me know.

As with most primary elections, the fringe activist minority turns out to vote and elects more ideologically extreme candidates, or supports more ideologically extreme referendums, hence, tyranny of the minority which the rest of you are subject to in the general, or in this case, statutorily/constitutionally.

You can't deny it. While the urban areas are a different story, the majority of counties and NC's population are rural and it's mostly conservative Christians that reside in rural areas. And they apparently also don't understand the meaning of separation of church and state.

I need to look more into it, but I'm curious. Why does a state have any right to dictate what constitutes a marriage? Primarily for taxes? I mean, why is it the state's business to approve/disapprove of any marriage? That's a personal issue that should be left up to individuals imo. A domestic dispute is a domestic dispute; it shouldn't matter on the relationship between the parties. If I'm being batshit crazy, someone please pm me and help me understand.

"Not in NC, but I'm supporting marriage as a covenant between one man and one woman. Allowing gay marriage is like making it legal for unmarried five-year olds to have sex with each other. No one is harming or taking advantage of another, but it's still immoral and wrong before God. We should hold on to our conscience and sensitivity against homosexuality and gay marriage just like we still hold on to our conscience and sensitivity against little children having sex. The general consensus of society does not change what is right and wrong. If I was in a country where it was legal for little children to have sex, I would stand up against it, just like I'm standing up against gay marriage now. So if you live in NC, go vote FOR marriage!"

Is anyone else feeling clinically depressed over this? I am. And I am not so sure I will be able to sleep tonight because I am kind of stuck in an endless loop of trying to make some shred of sense out of the arguments I'm hearing for the majority opinion here, and failing.

Comparing homosexuality to kindergartens having sex goes well beyond differences in opinion. It goes along with why I'm not friends with Neo-Nazis or other categories of hate mongers.

This is pretty typical of young people. They can't fathom that there are people in this world that have different opinions on things than them. Hence, they're utterly devastated when something that was painfully obvious (the amendment passing) comes to be.

Amendment 1, US Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

This isn't a difference of opinion. This is voting on government policy - policy which is carried out by force. If you're held at gunpoint in the street, you don't ask, "Why can't we just get along?" Clearly, the time for getting along has passed. Getting along would have meant not having this amendment up for vote at all or voting against it.

I can fathom it. We live in a hillbilly state in a country that is already culturally backwards and mocked by the world. It doesn't change the fact that I view people who voted "For" with contempt. They're either hateful or ignorant - there are no other possibilities.
