"Mend some fences" is the opposite of "Build the wall".

So, as in, he is asking them to improve relations ("mend some fences") while separating the countries further (building the damn wall).

The perception used to be that if the media is reporting something, it's important. We are losing that perception because of focus on "stories" such as this which then get co-opted and turned into attack vectors in politics.

She should be criticized for things such as the "alternative facts" story. When this becomes the story on which to criticize her you no longer will convince independent, rational people that you have a good reason for her to be fired. It ends up looking like some petty schoolyard attack and people dismiss it. Furthermore, when the bulk of your news articles look like this you stop clicking on any of them, which includes very important ones.
