Bah! Only professional poker players such as Noid may make such comments towards me. Don't you have better things to do, like driving around Jersey trying to pick up chicks?

ooo oo ooo i got one

FYI, IIRC PT's BB/100 was coded for LHE not NLHE, so the BB/100 displayed actually means Big Bets, not big blinds, so the true bb/100 is infact 2x your pt bb/100 so you could use ptBB/100 to imply

^^ Good point, I've often wondered whether people are using the NL fix when they claim 5+ bb/100. I don't use it, my 4 bb/100 that I claim is actually 8 for all intensive purposes like determining my hourly rate.

Checking for value:

Hand #40567696-77552 at Juneau (No Limit Hold'em)
Started at 18/Apr/07 19:20:39

J Five is at seat 0 with $98.75.
BringurAgame is at seat 1 with $200.
P0NYB0Y is at seat 2 with $431.95.
privells17 is at seat 3 with $542.75.
_-Legend-_ is at seat 4 with $41.65.
Wisclax is at seat 5 with $411.65.
The button is at seat 3.

_-Legend-_ posts the small blind of $1.
Wisclax posts the big blind of $2.

J Five: -- --
P0NYB0Y: -- --
privells17: Ks Kh
_-Legend-_: -- --
Wisclax: -- --

Pre-flop:

J Five folds. P0NYB0Y folds. privells17 raises to
$7. _-Legend-_ folds. Wisclax re-raises to $22.
privells17 re-raises to $67. Wisclax calls.

Flop (board: 4s 5d 8h):

Wisclax checks. privells17 bets $95. Wisclax calls.

Turn (board: 4s 5d 8h 3c):

Wisclax checks. privells17 checks.

Villain is a laggy(25/17) regular(possibly a fellow pro), we have a history. In fact this hand took place earlier in the session: http://www.pokerhand.org/?1012958

He had ~$250 in front of him and the pot was $325 on the turn. Who can tell me what I mean by "checking for value"?

Perhaps checking to show weakness, represent overcards.

I am kind of assuming you think he has something between 99 and QQ, and you want him to think you whiffed.

I could be wrong....

I said he was a regular, possibly a fellow pro. I'm not really worried about 76s given the $67 it cost him to see that flop.

i think that you're checking to control the pot.

you're both rather deep, and pot control is a major issue.

if he has you beat, you bet the turn again, and he RR all in, you are forced to call, often way behind.

also, your check induces any overpair to the board here to make a sizeable bet on the river that you can call off, and be well ahead of betting range.

also

since he is 25/17, and knows your play

he knows you are capable of even 3 betting here with something like KQ aor QTsuited

that induces even more of a chance of a "steal" with AK, AQ, AJ something of the like

Okay, my standard play in this hand would have been to shove the turn. Betting any less is illogical and frankly it looks a little stronger than a shove. The problem is, I don't think he's calling a shove with any worse hands. Even though he stacked off in a 175BB pot earlier with jacks, that doesn't mean he will do so in a 420BB pot.

By checking, I'm selling him on AK. He knows I cold called his last 3-bet with a big pair(also KK), and he also knows that AK is a likely holding whenever someone 4-bets. I'm not checking for pot control, I'm checking to get value on the river from hands that wouldn't have called a push on the turn.

I don't really consider it a slow play, I'm playing one pair in a huge pot, not a lock hand by any means. I'm just trying to sell him on AK. It's a good time to do this, because 95% of the time one of us has 2 outs. It could very well be me, but if he AA or a set he's just gonna call a turn push so I'm not losing anything by checking.

The value I'm gaining is whatever amount of his stack I can get him to put in on the river that he wouldn't have put in on the turn, minus the 5% equity of a $820 pot(I'm resigned to calling a shove on the river whether he improves or not) that I'm giving him with his free shot at a 2 outer. There is more value in this check than betting the turn.

Most situations aren't this cut and dry, but 4 betting preflop really narrows down both players ranges and I was willing to make this check. If we were both sitting with one buy-in I would be getting it in on the flop or turn every time with KK, the fact that we were deepstacked is what made things more complicated.

Yeah you and feeble were both on the right track. What I really wanted to get into was the quantitative value in checking. Most situations aren't so cut and dry where you can do that, as in you don't know exactly how much equity you're losing by giving a free card.

Assuming he does put you on AK

What does he likely do on the river if he holds the following hands:

4-4?

8-8?

A-A?

Q-Q?

Also you said you'd call any bet... what about a small bet... do you raise or just call?

And if he checks to you on the river.... You push and represent AK right?

I'd just call if he did less than push. I could see him check-calling with 99-QQ, but he's definately going to lead with a set or AA and he might just lead with 99-QQ too, I'm not 100% sure.

And yeah, pushing the river would best represent an AK if he checked to me. Betting $150 is a decent idea just to make sure he's gonna be priced in, but I think a push is prolly better.

Well I figured he'd lead with a set or AA, but I was curious if you think he'd try to "price you in" or if he'd push with those holdings.

If he really believes you hold AK... wouldn't he be more inclined to check to induce a river bluff from you?

I guess I'm asking if he bets, what do you think his likely holdings are... and is the size of his bet relevant?

Not sure.

I may as well go ahead and post the river action, I'm starting to give away info on it with my answers.

The river was an Ace and my plan was foiled. Check Check, KK > 99 for a nice pot.

Any river other than an Ace or King and I think I get some value from my check. He INSTANTLY checked when the Ace fell and I sensed disgust on his part, I'm pretty sure he thought I just sucked out with AK. Hoping I have AK is the only reason to call that flop bet, and I think I sold him on that with my turn check. It was just an unfortunate river.

So whats this shit with ePassporte putting a holding charge on your check card for the amount you deposit. I deposited $350 and one posted, and one is left pending and I called them today and they said it should reverse by the end of today....3 days later. Why the fuck they gotta charge my ass twice? I know I get it back and all, but I don't have access to that money in the mean time.
