Took out a huge armadillo last night with my .223. I have never seen one that big, my dog got it moving out of some bushes and right when it was exposed it took one right behind the neck.

Got a game call for coyotes, hopefully I'll get to take down a few of those this weekend. I can't wait until my dad gets some nice night vision and we can do some real fun night hunting out here. No hogs on our property but they are in the area and some friends of ours would love for us to go over to their land and do some hog slaying.

Probably. The next generation of night optics will be integrated thermal and NV. We have them now in the PSQ-20 but it's still a concept in infancy. Also the 20s look retarded.

Despite the cost being prohibitively expensive, I think thermals have a place in population reduction and predator hunts.

Is there any reason I should spend around $80 on the rcbs powder measure instead of $25 for the lee? I am looking for a quicker way to dispense powder for my handgun loads, I will use the chargemaster combo for rifle still but most of my pistol shooting is going to be plinking so I am not as concerned with perfect measures (don't want something that can't throw a relatively consistent charge though).

yes, the Lee "perfect" powder measure sucks. spring for the RCBS or lyman or redding with a baffle. you can make your own baffle out of a beer can if you want. instead of buying the RCBS stand for my uniflow, i made one out of some scrap flat bar. i'll take a pic.

don't you have a Lee turret press? use the auto disk with it. it seems to work ok.

loaded almost 600 rds of 223 yesterday. wanted to fill six 7-pocket bandoliers (840 rds), but i ran out of bullets. got 1k air pulled 55 gr FMJs out of some XM193 on the way.

^^ Thanks, that is what I figured. I have the single stage, used to have the turret years ago and the auto disk did work pretty darn well actually. I will probably skip the turret this time and go straight to the progressive if my shooting demands it. I am thinking of getting into IDPA for something fun to do so if that happens I will probably get a progressive sooner rather than later but with being so busy at work I don't see that happening anytime soon (travel Mon-Thurs every week)

if you plan to use the uniflow for handgun ammo, be sure to get the one with the small cavity drum. mine came in my kit and had the large cavity drum, which was fine until i started loading handgun and got the other drum.

how much per round does it cost you to load .223?

do you have more or less failures with your rounds then cheap-shit comparable (brass/lead instead of steel/steel) rounds?

for general plinking loads i load 25 gr of H335 under a cheap 55 gr FMJ with a CCI #41 primer in whatever range brass i can find. i did buy some brass to get me started.

8 lbs of H335 = $150. enough for 2240 rds. 6.7 cents/rd.
1000 bullets = $90. 9 cents/rd.
1000 primers = $27. 2.7 cents/rd

so, if you can get free range brass, it's 18.4 cents/rd. if you buy military pulldown powder equivalent to H335, you can knock about 3 cents/rd off. if you buy 3k bullets at a time, you can save about 2 cents/rd.

idk how my ammo compares b/c i've never fired a round of factory 223. this bulk load shoots about 3" at 100 yds. that's not great, but it's fine for plinking. i can ring steel and roll bowling pins. i squirrel it away and would feel comfortable with it in a social unrest sort of situation.

i've never had a misfire with any of my reloads. i blew a primer out doing load development with my 22-250. i was .5 gr below book max, but it was a little too hot. i had a couple rounds jam in my AR, but it was because i was running it too dry. i didn't know any better at the time.

with premium bullets like Sierra MatchKings my reloads will shoot 1" at 100 yds. i haven't really done enough load development with the better bullets yet.

i've recently been fooling with 55 gr Bergers over H380 in 22-250. i've got them doing 3700 fps and they just make the hole bigger.

A lot of counties have a restriction within 100 yards of a residence. Doubt it'll be an issue with 40 acres but just in case.

just call the sheriff's dept and ask them about any ordinances. if you don't feel like complying, then don't and just see what happens. make sure you've got a good backstop. depending on what kind of neighbors you've got, you might never hear a thing. if your neighbors don't like it, the law will probably just come out and tell you to stop, at which point you can jump through their hoops.

Mine absolutely hated semi wad cutters. Thing would jam at least once per mag bit it liked rounded tip rounds much better. Get some Wilson mags and you should be good to go.

The thing I really didnt like about mine compared to my dads colt is how hard it was to take down. You had to have a tool to take out the guide rod and then the piece you had to depress that held the spring in would cut the complete fuck out of your thumb if you weren't careful. I don't know if it was just mine or what but it seems pretty stupid to make a part that you have to press down have razor sharp edges.

that part (recoil spring plug) doesn't have sharp edges unless you have to put the version for a full length guide rod on. regular guide rod = regular recoil spring plug = no sharp edges. they make a tool for pushing it down.

Ah ok, that is what I figured. I didnt bother learning very much about it because I am in the small minority that doesn't reall care for 1911's. Not just for that, I just never really enjoyed shooting the gun (blasphemy I know). Maybe someday I will try again, I absolutely love the looks of them, just never fell in love like most everyone else seems to.

And if I got another one with a full length guide rod that would be the first part to go. Hate needing a tool to take down a gun.

the rounded side of the magazine floorplate works quite well to depress the recoil spring plug

it isn't as easy to take down as a glock but it isn't that bad

you don't need the tool, it just makes it easier. i use the plastic handle of a T-handle allen wrench, but i've done that^ at the range.

after field stripping/reassembling several times it's really a snap, just need the allen key to break loose the guide rod...just used a plastic cleaning rod to compress the spring while rotating the bushing (I like that magazine flange idea too). other than that, pretty similar to most other metal frame automatics I've broken down. though it was nice to strip my glock for cleaning, felt like I was cheating or something after doing the 1911 a few times

put 100 rounds through it and about 60 through the g32. 1911 definitely spoiling the shit out of me for the glock, but i'm about as accurate with both. the glock has about 30-40% more felt recoil than the 1911...that .357sig is a hot round

Safariland makes the best retention holsters.

Blackhawks are becoming more and more prevalant in accidental discharge scenarios.

I've been issued both at work, I only use Safariland. Keep in mind too, I use mine in harsher conditions than most; urban climbing, fast-roping, SOCP combatives, I wholeheartedly endorse Safariland holsters.

Nothing that dramatic. I'm an 18B, Special Forces Weapons Sergeant on an ODA in 5th Special Forces Group, colloquially known as a Green Beret.

If you google any of those terms, you'll find stuff that can explain it more interestingly.

I'm on a direct action team so CQB and urban combat are my main focus. Shooting is what I do, and teach. At the end of the day it's a job and it pays my bills.

How are the Blackhawk Serpa holsters leading to accidental discharges? I have one and I don't see how it's physically possible. The frame of the gun is bottomed out in the holster before the retention clip gets near the trigger.

I have a full length guide rod and no good edge on a mag to use :-(.

I will say this... I shot about every round I could find out of mine last sat and not one failure. But my feed ramp is polished to a beautiful shine :-).

I've never been a pistol guy but my bastard 1911 (2011 actually) is now my favorite gun.

I say bastard cause half the camp is single stack only and the rest say sti only but my para is perfect for me. It shoots where I want it to and seems to feed/eject anything.
